I think Friedman said last night Matthews will likely be heading into the season without a contract extension.
Cant blame him for exploring options. Keefe won't make it through the end of this coming year without a cup either, so, better to know what you're signing up for.

Imagine if Couturier didn't sign and saw us sign Tortorella...

Keefe is basically a given to be fired in this process. Which is hilarious because an actually good coach will serve as collateral damage in front office restructuring.......while certain other teams give the keys to the kingdom to their single season 7th worst team in the NHL 65 year old prophet.

If the Ducks have a brain, they'd pursue him. That seems like a good fit for their forward/defense talent.

Shanny has got this! He knows what the Leafs need and, boy oh boy, is it not another stats nerd.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Keefe was given a (short) leash with the new GM. The Leafs -- barring absolutely major changes -- will make the playoffs next year by default. A first year GM would be wise to give the incumbent a year to show it was the previous GMs fault, and if not, the next GM can basically buy himself a year by blaming the coach at year end.

The flip side is the new GM gets progress with the same coach, and blames the previous GM for holding the team back. Kind of a win win for their situation really.

Leafs would be fools not to trade him before July 1st if that is case.

His NMC kicks in on July 1st and his chances of pulling Gaudreau increase dramatically, and Leafs end up with hands tied if they struggle this year and look to move him at TDL as he would dictate trade destination.

The fact Matthews wants to be highest paid player in NHL (From reports) to me is another reason the Leafs should consider trading him as core changing move.

One of Marner/Matthews needs to go IMO

“Jarome was one of the most competitive guys I’d ever seen in my life. Anything that was going on, he wanted to win,” recalled longtime teammate Robyn Regehr, second to Iginla among the Flames’ career leaders in games played. “We used to play this ridiculous computer game called Age of Empires. We’d play it on the plane. Technology wasn’t what it is now, so we would have wires running everywhere, duct-taped to the ground so they wouldn’t trip anyone as they were walking around. “Denis Gauthier was really, really good at this game. I wasn’t that great, Denis was awesome, and I would say that Jarome and Craig started as average. But they didn’t stay average for very long. I heard from sources — reliable sources — that Craig was hiding in his bathroom, reading these books about how to improve his Age of Empires strategy, and Jarome was always sending him stuff.”
