Ok, now run those numbers 3 years into Simmonds deal. How are we looking then? Not so great.

Like I think we have been going through one of the more steady period of flyers hockey where the wildest moves were Coburn and Schenn trades, both of whom are epitome of complimentary player, not a core pieces yet it feels like 80% or roster from 3 years ago is gone. I just don't think predicting cap space 3 years into future is an easy task.

Especially with a team where everything seems like a wildcard. Be it 1C, 1D, 1G, coaching, or young talent being impact players.

Severson's deal is $25M for 6 years, an AAV of $4.16672. Does not include a NTC.

Good deal for Devils.

Solid deal. Now if NJ could find 5 other good dmen they will be in good shape

Devil fans were saying he(Andy Greene) had a rough year and was looking like he was shot. Part of it was definitely that he was playing the hardest minutes though. I always thought he was an underrated dman especially during their 2012 run. I don't think he is done yet, he probably just needs to be in a much lesser of a role. Pretty sure he was like their top line defenseman last year but I am not 100% certain on that. I think he can still be a solid bottom pair vet presence defenseman but I don't think he is worth close to 5 mil anymore. I would swap him for Amac in a second though.

Hakstol had no choice though.

:sarcasm:

Yeah, Hakstol's last resort. There was NO. OTHER. OPTION. than to play him on the top PK unit, match him against scoring lines, and play him at the end of 1 goal games.:shakehead

All those posts insisting he would be back.

I seem to remember certain ultra-pessimists saying it was guaranteed, that we needed to accept it already, and that next year was already over before it began because he'd be back and Hakstol would still be here. Apparently Hextall was equally as in infatuated with him as Hakstol because he didn't swoop in and micromanage the coach.

Well his twin did get sweet extension around the time when reports said 4 teams have inquired about him at trade deadline. I really feel as if we won some sort of expansion lottery when McPhee decided to take him. That must have been his second worst move after not selecting Mrazek.

However with Filppula in the fold, Vecchione signing with flyers and so on people slowly were letting go of their VDV paranoia.

It will be fascinating to see how Bellemare is used by Vegas. They have a lot of guys who can play center, so I think they would have been better off taking Raffl.

But taking Bellemare over Raffl doesn't even come close to taking Sbisa and his $4m salary for no apparent reason and ending up with almost as many dmen on one-way contracts as active forwards.

I was resigned with Raffl being gone and then McPhees roster building genius came through.

They still have 10 defensemen on their roster & have about a month to go until rosters have to be finalized to open the season.

Jason Garrison $4.6Mx1
Luca Sbisa $3.6Mx1
Clayton Stoner $3.25Mx1
Nate Schmidt $2.23Mx2
Brayden McNabb $1.70Mx1
Jon Merrill $1.14Mx1
Colin Miller $1Mx1
Derek Engelland $1Mx1
Shea Theodore $863Kx1
Griffin Reinhart $800Kx2

Theodore is the only one that is waiver exempt.

CBJ still have $8m in cap space with only Anderson left to sign, so it's telling they still went ahead and bought Hartnell out with two years left. If they hadn't bought him out, they'd still have about $4.25m in cap space.

I'm sure his NMC complicated situation expansion wise. I'm happy for him though, who would want to play hockey in Ohio?

Theodore is only one who should be getting Nhl time development wise.
Colin Miller was crazy sheltered on a team filled with two way players under Juliens structure. It won't be easy transition for him.

Stoner, Engelland and Garrison are absolutely terrible though and should be waived. Realistically I think Stoner is only who gets waived and maybe they will try to sneak Reinhart through the waivers at the start of the season.
