Leafs have done a great job making there defense so much worse... basically a collection of misfit toys all slotted 1-2 spots too high.
Sandin, Liljegren and Timmins were all let go and all three are better than half their blue-line. Heck, Sandin would be their #2. And they gave these guys up for very little.
Sandin: 11 games of Erik Gustafsson and the 28th pick.
Liljegren: An AHL Dman, a 3rd and a 6th.
Timmins: 5th rounder.
They spent more value to GET Brandon Carlo (basically 2x 1sts and a 4th and retention) than they got for those 3 guys combined lmao.
You can't have a blue-line in the modern NHL with only 1.5 guys who can pass a puck out of the zone, and only 3 guys who are above average skaters.
Yeh, their blue-line is probably average defensively! But their transition game fell apart this season and more magnified in play-offs.
Leafs fwds constantly had to come deep to take the puck and then often meant late setting up in OZ.
If you watch their goals vs the Panthers almost all of them are either a fwd coming back to get the puck or a fwd turning a puck over in the OZ for a quick chance!
They became so obsessed with getting bigger and heavier and harder to play against that they dismantled a functional D group and made a frankensteins monster D that yeh, is pretty big! But cant play in transition at all.
