Are the Rangers going to be bad enough to have a chance at the top pick?

Lotto will give them shot

But with talent they have its hard to see them finishing at bottom of league with Sharks, Hawks and Preds who look like favorites to have best odds at #1 pick

This draft at top though has pretty good talent 1-4 that one can argue any of those 4 can go #1 so just getting near bottom may be enough to land impact player

I get most wouldn’t touch that contract, but I’d buy into Shesterkin if I was Briere.

You’ve maybe got your chance to get elite talent into the most important position in the game. For a BS retool going to have to rely on above average goalie play to have a shot in hell - I’d explore the deal if the Rangers are willing to panic.

He’s the number 2 goalie in the league behind Helle imo.

I'd maybe start considering it if Flyers were capable of making good value deals to fill the rest of roster. Clearly, if you pay that much to one goalie, you have to be creative and get some bargains to have nicely filled skater lines. Does, for example, Deslauriers contract give you confidence Flyers FO are capable of that?

Unloading Trouba & Goodrow’s bad contracts unscathed at least give them some avenue to reup. They might look to unload another big contract or two with underperforming & aging players like Zibanejad or Kreider.

Trade was Gostisbehere like from the beginning. He had a down year last year even by the numbers but it wasn’t awful or anything plus he had the track record in previous seasons before that.

Reality land says no, but even I have to hope they figure it out. 20 years of garbage would be tough to swallow.

With THEIR plan to be competitive, I dont see it happening with an average goalie. They will need a true upper echelon guy to overcome a glaring weakness in high end forward/defensive talent.

I might be a bit solo in my evaluation of goaltenders, their importance to the game. The position is risky as performance fluctuates, but I do think Shesterkin is a guy that more often than naught - has the talent level to gamble that risk.

Again, depends on if Drury is willing to panic - but I'd have strong interest. The contract is worrisome, but I'd rather take the risk on a poor contract with a guy that can actually win you a few playoff rounds vs overpaying a bunch of mediocre vanilla guys that don't move the needle what so ever.

I'd do the same with Saros honestly. If they can get a top 5 goaltender in the game, you make that happen. They don't have the skill in scouting, or overall as a FO to win without one. No way in hell.

From Presidents trophy to last in the division in a year. Looks like an almost unprecedented fall from grace.

They haven't really lost any players either.

True but things like Alexis Lafreniere taking a step back and not building off his promising 2023-24 season has been issue for Rangers

Back again to being guy with major ? going forward but this time has sizeable long-term deal while having those ?

Goalie is the last piece, if you can dominate at 5x5, have solid STs, you can be a marginal PO team even with a bad goalie, and then you're one deal or a good draft pick away from being a SC contender.

This is why I agree with the philosophy that you take a goalie in the 3rd to 5th rd every year if one is available with upside. Never know when a Dostal will emerge.

Kreider has 3 years left at 6.5 nothing horrendous and they won't do any better on the free market plus it's to be expected for a player entering his mid thirties who relies on his separation speed to be the difference maker to see some dropoff. What's weird is the zibanejad whose play fell off the cliff while staying completely healthy.

Agree, though the other half is identifying one. Flyers have a few with some promise so time will tell.

So basically Vancouver have to trade Miller or Pettersen cause they hate each other?

Teammates disliking each other isn't new, but one of your best players taking a midseason break because he despises the highest paid player seems incredible. Is that what happened?
