I have a friend Sabres fan and am not sure what to say anymore. So many years of rebuild and it's still doesn't look good. Every year (alongside Detroit) they are put in the list of will-break-through-finally teams and...

There is something seriously wrong there, they have way too much talent to be this bad.

Yeah, the GM has made some horrendous NHL decisions. But it's 3 games where they're generating a shitload of threat and just not capitalizing. Stop me if you've heard this PDO song and dance before.

BUF

BUF

Now maybe they fall apart. But they've started the year pretty well. Thompson looks back on track. Benson had one major mistake, but looks dynamic and has excellent underlyings.

We've all heard it, no need to re-open fresh wounds...

I still remember that PHI season where we had crazy good first 10-15 games, but everyone and their mothers would see it's unsustainable with just IQ above room temperature (Celsius) and VERY basic understanding of (semi)advanced stats. Anyone who would point it out would be called party-pooper (well, in meaner words, but I won't repeat it here) and ''but the EYE test''. Of course, we came crushing down.

So, probably the opposite is happening w Buffalo here. They are not 0-3 bad. I saw them in Prague. No way. But... I still don't think they're making the playoffs. And given their current drought it's a bit loco.

I was about to say, it's been 3 games and people are writing them off. They didn't even look that bad in these games, people are just succumbing to early season reactionary narratives (I also do this all the time, no shade).

I don’t think they’re overrated at all. They just aren’t good. Who is their high end talent up front? They keep trading those guys away.
They're cursed like the Oilers were for years. Not only do they trade their best forwards away, they all win Stanley Cups shortly after. O'Reilly, Eichel, Reinhart. Even Okposo has his Stanley Cup now.

Curses are bullshit, they just hire objectively stupid people to do objectively stupid things.

But hopefully they’re cursed forever.

Makes you wonder what's more frustrating. Never making the playoffs like the Sabres, or always making the playoffs and always exiting in the first round like the Leafs?

How ironic is it that Tampa plays their first game of the season against a team named the Hurricanes?

Definitely would rather be the Leafs

Funny how years ago goalies played 60-70 games. Didn't have the workout habits, nutrition, in much better shape, better trainers and physical therapy, and everything in between. Now with all that they can't handle it. Makes me laugh.

Just like pitchers now can't more than 6/7 or 200 innings.
Think they do it to help them last longer. But I think sometimes playing more can get you into a better rhythm. It’s a really odd thing.

Pitchers can't go more than 6 innings because hitters are much better.
A decade ago, how many hitters could hit a 99 MPH FB?
Now, if you throw in the "sweet spot" kiss it goodbye no matter how hard you throw, unless you have a lot of spin and movement.
Pitchers throw harder, both velocity and spin.

In the old days, they'd throw 90-92 and could pitch all day (except Nolan Ryan, who was a freak).
