It's amazing how some people here will hit us with all these arbitrary timelines or barriers, only for the true contenders in this league to smash them to pieces every single time. Just this single trade blasts though...

You can't blame the Flyers, because:
1. No trades wil happen until after 4 nations. It's basically a de facto roster freeze
2. Trades are hard => a star western conference player on an expiring deal is traded with retention for a young breakout Eastern conference player and a prospect and picks to the retaining team
3. You don't want to break up the locker room

Nah, I'm not here for that, Crosby should retire a Pen, let's go a different direction.

VAN receives: Marcus Pettersson, Rutger McGroarty, Rasmus Ristolainen, PIT #1s in 2025 and 2026
PIT receives: Elias Pettersson, Elias Pettersson, Cal Petersen
PHI receives: Matt Grzelcyk, Owen Pickering, Rickard Rakell, VAN #2 in 2026
Will never happen, requires way too much work and creativity on the part of Briere and the Flyers.

Well obviously Rantanen didn’t provide the kind of cultural impact that a Scott Laughton provides.

Also, Torts is pretty strict and Briere’s bedtime is 9pm so he has a very limited window to work on trades which, don’t forget, must first be approved by Torts, Flahr, Jones, JJ, Clarke, Holmgren, Gritty, Rocky, and at least 2 beer vendors and the team’s ticket sales staff.

The last trades the Flyers have made:

  • Attard for Gleason
  • #150 + ‘25 6th for #107 (Ruohonen)
  • #118 + ‘25 3rd for #59 (Gill)
  • #32 for EDM ‘25 1st
  • #12 for #13 (Luchanko) + ‘25 3rd
  • 4th for Erik Johnson
  • Allison for Gurianov
  • Hanifin $$ + Vorobyov for 5th
  • Walker + ‘26 5th for ‘25 COL 1st + Johansen
  • Gauthier for Drysdale + ‘25 2nd

That’s every trade since August 2023. Real changing the course of the franchise stuff. Virtually every trade was meaningless or a loss.
I don’t think I could state which position more than one of these players play, and the one would probably still be wrong.

One trade is one trade. A dozen trades would be different.

And it's a bit bizarre, trading a star heading into his UFA season for two lesser talents with one more season before they're UFAs. Extending the window by one year but reducing the chances both seasons.

Makes you wonder what Tulsky is doing, only forwards under contract next three years:
Aho (27), Svechnikov (24), Jarvis (22), Kotkaniemi (24), Martinook (32), Staal (36), Carrier (30)
Hall, Rantanen, Roslovic, Fast, Robinson UFAs

Similar on defense, 4 signed for at least 3 years
Slavin (30), Walker (30), Ghost (31), Chatfield (28)
Orlov & Burns UFAs
Andersen G UFA
I haven’t payed attention to hockey in a good long while but how is Taylor hall and 50% off Rantenan’s contract only worth a 3rd?
With the cap rising, retaining money has far less value than when the cap was flat, especially the first couple years when teams were taken by surprise when COVID hit. Which is why it no longer makes sense for rebuilding teams to focus on creating cap room for trades.

Stopped by this when going to check the Birds thread, and I can shed a little bit of light here...

We have a bunch of prospects we are expecting to come to the NHL over the next few years, namely Unger Sorum and Atamanov at forward and Nikishin and Morrow on defense. Lots of cap space going into this summer, even if we lock in Rants for the $14m people expect we still have about $14m to lock up some depth pieces to round out the roster.

Who would've guessed that making a dozen picks per draft and almost always going BPA benefits a team in the long run? (Hint: it's not the Flyers)

It's a gamble, if those prospects arrive next season, it could pay off, if they struggle for a couple years, then it could put you in "almost" limbo.

Rantanen is a scary extension at 29 at $14M. What if his production is partially a product of MacKinnon?
You'll pay for peak year production (25-28) for a 29-36 old year old player.

I understand the why, Carolina is in the "Toronto zone," where you get 100+ points every season but can't get past the 2nd round (though for Car, it's more getting past the CF, twice, and 2nd rd 3 times, so they're closer than the Leafs).

For Colorado, this is a real drop off, especially if you move Necas to RW to replace Rantanen. His production will increase next to MacKinnon, but he's not going to approach Rantanen.
Landeskog is starting to skate, which is a dilemma for the Avs, if he comes off LTIR he'll help a little (doubt he'd be close to his prime) but put them up against the cap with little room to make more additions.

Since the Flyers have Colorado's 1st, have to hope if Blackwood falters, this could be enough to knock Colorado out of the playoffs/first rd exit and a nice draft pick in the middle teens.

Funny, Wheeler has Carolina's pipeline rated equivalent to the Flyers.

Colorado is a potential trade partner if Sakic wants to make a run this season.
They lack depth and have been overplaying their top forwards MacKinnon (23:11), Rantanen (22:30, doubt Necas will play that much), Lehkonen (21:18), Drouin (20:16).

They brought in Middelstadt to be their 2C ($5.75M for 2 more years) who is struggling, Parker Kelly is meh at 3C, Drury slots in at 4C.
Manson at 2RHD is struggling ($4.5M for one more season), Middlelton, Malinski is a meh 3rd pair.

A RW would allow Necas to move to 2C, pushing Middlestadt down.
Risto would be attractive if we took Manson for cap purposes.

They have few draft picks, (2) 2nds in 2025, both late, 1st rd in 2026
However, some top prospects in Ritchie C, Gulyayev LHD, Behrens LHD.

Not one trade, but two trades???

But....who?
That's like trading Attard for Gleason.
