One of the last shifts, Matthews took a nice low cut pass in the NZ and entered the o zone with speed... Minny had tracked back so there was no pass option.. Mitch could have busted it to the net and at least tried to make things difficult but that was not happening... it rarely does.

Minny are going to play 2003 hockey. If you don't get to the paint... forget it.

This team's inability to score will be the end of us.
As it has been for the past 8 playoffs? You might be onto something!

Watching this team play under this style all season certainly makes you wonder if we have been giving those playoff opponents way too much credit for their defensive proweress!

This team has no real identity. A high powered offense that can't actually score with a miserable PP, middle of the pack defense and decent but inexperienced goaltending, with many cardio merchants and guys past their primes. Very strange mix and vision at this point.

The guy that played Patty “the iron ghost” Marleau in top playoff minutes? He just had different looking personal favorites, it wasn’t a meritocracy under him by any means.

I don't think Babcock was trying to build a meritocracy but I see his tendencies in hindsight as a counter balance to giving full control of the room to Auston and Mitch.

Babcock probably did so just for selfish, egomaniacal reasons, maybe in the classic psy-ops hockey manipulator mold. But I don't think you can coach Auston and Mitch straight they way they want and have it not look like substitute teacher hockey. They're not a serious duo.

So in the past it's been they score like crazy in the regular season but can't score in the playoffs. Now they can't score in the regular season so that means we will fill the nets in the playoffs

Looking back I don't think so. He's just an asshole and didn't know how to do it better.

Also looking back, he had these guys pegged pretty accurately.

Once the players ousted him, it was game over (exaggeration, maybe). Little did we know.

Minnesota is about to sweep the season series

When was the last time that happened…
It’s actually pretty weird in how they win lose win lose win lose. lol!

Berube makes me long for Keefe. Berube is nothing special.

It feels like Berube bet on aligning himself with the players and not really challenging them. I don't think you can buddy up to the core, be part of the country club, ride the highs of those big party games and comeback heroics without these massive hangover kind of games.

Berube's job was to install an all business approach but I think has fallen victim to up and down cycle of Auston and Mitch hockey. They might come back in the third and look like conquering heroes, they might look like dogs the rest of the game, but to me the low effort of the first and second period means process doesn't work.

What seems strange though, is that early in the season it was working, or so we were fooled to think by the stellar goaltening. Maybe the players and coaches were fooled too and are only now realizing they need to adjust some things? Once can only hope.

I do not believe this style of play leads anywhere. Our star players do not play at their peak consistenly enough for this to work imo.

I'm not saying replace Tavares this season.
I mean they need a 2nd. line center going forward.
Whether Tavares re-signs for a couple years or not, they need a 2nd. line center, and have nothing in the system.
It's going to have to come from the outside, no doubt. Do they do something at the deadline with term left, or do a short fix and then address in the off-season? Guess depends on what the options are.

You don’t consider JT at least a 2nd line center?
