Michalek has cleared waivers and been sent to the Marlies, Ben Smith was claimed from Colorado and has taken his roster spot for now.

Tonight on the Leafs pre-game one of the analysts mentioned that a few team's were circling Michalek. They left Michalek alone when on waivers due to his cap hit. Salary retention and/or a contract coming back were said to be being considered in trade negotiations.

My guess a trade would resemble the following model.

Milan Michalek (50% retained - 2Mx1Yr) for Minor League Contract (950K or less for 1Yr) + Mid-Late rd. Pick

What teams have a roster spot open for Michalek and may want to buy low on him?

A trade with Florida makes too much sense.

Florida has the cap space, a bad contract to send back and a desperate need to improve the forward group.

Toronto could take Jakub Kindl from Panthers who's down in the minors with a 2.4 cap hit (3 million in real dollars).

What if we added a mid round pick?

They took on Greening and Michalek because they're only signed through the end of this season(along with Laich). The point being to clear space to sign the youngsters and possibly go after UFA's when the time comes. Simply getting a 4th rounder isn't enough given what I just said. I'd be fine dealing Michalek for another vet, just not one signed beyond this season.

Stoner + a 3rd for Michalek at 2M

The Ducks did scout the Leafs in the past week too.
We need SOMETHING more but maybe not anything significant.

How's this for you guys? Value's almost the same but this gives our depth D a new look, which we could use.

Michalek @ 2.0 *retained*
Hunwick LD 1.2
Campbell (AHL LD)

for

Stoner LD
Holzer RD
Guenin (AHL RD)
3rd Rounder (preferably not a playoff 3rd)

NHL
Rielly - Zaitsev
Gardiner - Polak
Marincin - Carrick/Holzer/Corrado

AHL
Loov - Guenin
Stoner - Valiev
Dermott / Nielsen / Holl

It might favour Anaheim a bit, but Leafs fans would sure like to unload Hunwick right about now.

Can Toronto retain any more contracts? - they are at or near the limit aren't they?

Someone should go out and get both Michaleks in this manner. They'd both be useful players at half their contract price. Z could still be #5.

Michalek was always the most likely to be one of the players they used one of their two open retention slots on given his high 4M cap hit and the fact he's a decent option for veteran depth on a playoff hopeful roster. It looks like it'll just happen earlier and for cheaper than originally expected.

Hunwick has an expiring contract, also he can be sent down and our cap hit is only 250k....no reason to take on stoner for 3.25 this year and next and only get a measly 3rd in return.

Hunwick for Stoner,2nd,4th. leafs get a couple picks, ducks get 2Mil in cap space immediately, 3.25 next year

Would love him back in a sens uniform.
Would offer a 4th+Sieloff for him at 2Mil

Depending on the status of MacArthur this would be a good move. By all reports Michalek was well liked within the Ottawa team.

Another option would be Dallas. They might want to see if the Michalek-Spezza-Hemky line can find lightning in a bottle again.

Also - if Ottawa trades Sieloff to Toronto, they would make it conditional on him playing the first shift the next time the two teams meet :)

Yeah Ducks did scout Leafs and Michalek was playing.

If not Fowler for Michalek at 2M :sarcasm: maybe Stoner+ for MM@2M?

Michalek works only if we send a cap dump in return. Does it work for Toronto?

Stoner is good for 2 things: 1) being a servicable and tough 3d pair defenseman and 2) being overpaid, unfortunately.
But he has 2 points in the season already

And I noticed last game vs Bolts Andersen was screened and let in a goal a bit too many times. Clayton can surely help take care of that.

I`ll accept also Matthews for Stoner straight up :sarcasm:

So... is there anything to be done around Stoner and MM?
It wouldn`t include one of our BEST prospects, that only works if we`d get ALL of Stoners contract off the books and even then probably not.

Yay or nay?

I see this a lot. People referring to "the youngesters are gonna need to get paid" that's 3 years away and have no leverage. Except maybe Matthews. But it's still 3 years away. And it's quite a good problem to have.

That is a deal I do, maybe try to push for a 3rd since we would be retaining half. Michalek is a decent player, just not a fit for this team at the moment. And he loved Ottawa, so if he is wanted there its a good show of good will
