Kings News: Mike Stothers hired as head coach of the Manchester Monarchs

This was coming. He planned on leaving last year but was brought back for another year.

The headlines comes across a little poorly, like the Kings didn't want him, but I'm pretty sure this was a mutual parting that worked for everyone involved.

Shocking and not shocking at the same time.

Morris had done a great job with developing the players and deserves a shot at a NHL coaching job of some kind. He's coached several good teams. He's made the playoffs all but one year. Coached the team on an amazing run at the end of the 2012-13 season to make the playoff, and coached great under some difficult situations.

However, his playoff record is rather unimpressive. The team has only won 3 playoff games in the last 3 years. Hasn't been out of the first round in 4 years. Which includes blowing a 3-1 lead in 2011 to Binghamton and being upset this year by the 8th seeded Admirals. There is also the disappointing performance during the NHL lockout. When the Monarchs were STACKED and expected to be a top team in the league, and ended up being a middle of the pack team by the time the lockout ended.

I wonder if this was something of a mutual parting between the two.

All that said though, I think Morris great coach and I think he will get a job in the NHL very soon! Good luck to him!

Morris will get a shot at an NHL assistant coaching job, and he deserves it.

Good luck Morris, you are a good man.

There is a rumor that we have plans for him (total rumor and not from a very reliable source, still) but I heard last night that there is a team that has already made overtures toward hiring coachM. Nashville keeps coming up but I had heard he was heading to the Flyers.

So lots of CoachM talk out there already but that is to be expected.

The Flyers make perfect sense actually...Hextall was GM of the Monarchs.

I thought the same thing when I heard it. MM would be a natural fit for the kind of systemic change that the Flyers are looking to do and would be a significant feather in their cap. Really happy to see them making a couple of moves in the right direction towards returning to being a hockey powerhouse again.

I think the rumor of our possibly having a spot for him in our org would be the one thing that might keep him with us but wherever he ends up he did a great job and will be missed. Now if Futa takes MM's job.....

Dunno much about him, but obviously trust the staff and organization to make the right selection and find someone to groom players to make the team and play Kings hockey. Look forward to seeing what he does with the Monarchs.

So the Monarchs hire Mike Stothers whose 2 year record in Moose Jaw was 46-78 and missed the playoffs TWICE? Please Explain

don't normally agree with him but this i do Seems weird to sign a coach with a losing record but in Dean i trust

It's not about the records.

The Kings want a coach down in Manchester that develops the Kids (the Kings way).

I'd certainly trust Dean's judgement over Matt Barry's :P I'm sure there is more to it than just number pointing.

ok well who has he developed that is currently in the nhl ? I'm open to hear the reasons to why him over someone else Being the cup champs you would think you could hire a winning coach

I love Mark Morris, sad to see him go.

But if your objective, he coached Manchester to Five first round exits, out of Seven tries.

Again though it's not about win/losses, Mark did a fine job with the Kids. The Kings let him pursue an NHL gig.

@bigmouthbarry Moose Jaw was in rebuilding phase for past 2 years, he's been coaching since 91-92. Players respect, worked w/ Futa too.
