This writer is guilty of doing what I feel like a lot of people on this board are, just failing to understand what has happened and judging the player based on what he was at his peak five years ago and not what he is now. I wonder how many Kings games this writer actually watched since the collapse of MR's game. I think anyone who watched MR the past couple of years for the Kings did not expect him to go down to the AHL and totally dominate and put up 2 PPG in his sleep, like he would have five years ago. The AHL is a significant step down from the NHL but it's still arguably the second best league in the world. Points in the AHL were never going to be the determining factor on whether Richards saw NHL ice again. The days of Richards as a scoring line player are over, the days as a defensive stopper are over, if MR makes it back to the NHL he is going to have to demonstrate the ability to play a fourth line role and likely as a mentor on a younger still developing team while not being a liability on the ice, that is something he was clearly unable to do on the win-now Kings. If MR wants back in the show he needs to show scouts that he is capable of playing that role and show he is willing to be a mentor to young players.

As for a return to the Kings or even an expanded role as some have suggested, I still just don't see it, I don't think people realize how truly awful he was in those roles he was given. Stoll and Shore are significantly better defensive players and that is the #1 priorty for Sutter on the bottom six. And this talk about Richards being this huge addition or spark for a playoff push is just non-sense, again guys, watch the games from this year and not 2009-2012, it's jubst not the same player, not even close.
MR will make it back if and when he restructures his contract, like Peyton!! I don't even know if you can do this in hockey? Anyway, he could be back after a buyout, but not with LA! He will be cheap after a buyout!

I am more interested in how Richards is backchecking and his board work.

Anyone that is seeing the games in person have something to report?

I think Shore is doing a fine job for the Kings in those two areas.

You cannot, NHL contracts are guaranteed. Buyout or 100$ (mutually-agreed upon) waivers are the only ways out unless I'm missing something. If he got the Brad Richards treatment he'd surely find an employer since he'd still be getting his money and could sign elsewhere for league minimum. I doubt very much that DL wants to do any of that...paying him to go play for someone else.

Agreed. I'd like to think Richards CAN be the superior player to both Stoll AND Shore but it's contingent on his defensive awareness. Stoll sucks hard, but even in the Pens game he was lifting sticks right in front of Quick.

No Richards no first Cup. Easy as that. I don't care where he's at now or what the hive mind in Philly thinks. They can have fun being a fringe playoff team.

Reading about Patrick Elias makes me really respect Richards even more. Elias who's 38 will not accept being a 4th line player. Richards who's in his prime and much more valuable than we Elias is willing to be demoted, even to the minors and not even say a word.

Except we now have a frighteningly good resume. How are they doing?

haha ya cause that was the part that I pointed out?
This trade keeps being defended by both sides and honestly both sides are right. it was the perfect deal for both organizations.

Although I still think LA gets in, I believe the kings are currently also a fringe playoff team.

Honestly not sure what point you were trying to make. The mutual benefits of the trade is currently being pissed away by one of the two parties involved.

What Bunk said.

It was a great deal both ways. It helped the Kings win a Cup and it helped Philly down the road. It doesn't matter what Richards is doing now.

Kings are a fringe playoff team that all the top teams are praying to Shivakamini that we don't get in. None of the top teams want to play us in the first round.

this.
I think most teams would rather play Nashville round 1

If we don't start winning more games than our rivals, none of them will have to.

If we're gonna get real technically the Kings have also pulled the same act both years they won the Cup and have been to three straight conference finals. The Kings and Flyers aren't even comparable.

Don't see how anyone couldn't realize it was a good trade for the Kings even though Richards is under performing now. He helped change the Team's locker room and helped win 2 cups, especially the 1st one. That makes it worth any challenges his contract/play bring the next few years.

You know... I bet in a year or 2 Richards will be a lot easier to move with a shorter contract. :handclap:

Seriously.... this team is going to need some luck to make the playoffs this year, and will probably have a worse roster next year thanks to the cap. What's the problem with playing Richards 20 minuets a night next year if the playoffs look to be a longer shot then this year?

It's a bit alarming when you watch footage of Richards' play from 2012 and 2013 compared to his play the past two seasons.

What's most obvious is his skating. He moved around the ice just fine before, but the past two years he looked like he had anchors tied to his skates.

His reflexes also slowed down quite a bit. He used to make quicker plays with the puck, but then he suddenly developed cement hands and could barely make any tape-to-tape passes and would just pass within the general vicinity of a teammate.

These changes in his play were very visual, and it has me thinking that his problems have more to do with him being physically unable to do the things he used to be capable of.

If Richards was still playing anywhere near his play from 2012 or 2013, he'd be in the lineup, especially over a waste of roster space like Stoll.

Seirously, if you're serious, get your head down cause there's a salvo on its way.

The Kings could match Richards up against guys like Getzlaf, Toews, Seguin every night, sure why not.

Who is the projected #1 pick in 2016?

Man looking at Richard's numbers in Manchester, I was hoping it would look more like hes a man among boys in that league. You would have to wonder if he even deserves a call up over Weal.

This is the second time I will post this for Richards' lovers.

Andreoff had 5 goals and 5 assists in 7 AHL games. That's 10 points in 7 games.

Richards' has 3 goals, 11 assists in 16 games. That's 14 points in 16 games.

So essentially, a rookie, who is typically a health scratch, with no points in 13 NHL games this year was on pace to outscore 30 year old NHL veteran in Richards'.

And which is more likely to continue; Andreoff or Richards? You think Andreoff finsihes the season with 100 points if he stays in the AHL?

You got some plug who could write a book on NHL press boxes and got lucky for seven games versus an NHL veteran who has produced at a first line NHL level in the past. You think Andreoff would even come close to Richards over a season? Post it 1,000 times if you want, it's just cherry picking numbers.

Maybe we can discuss Andreoff's NHL numbers someday. That's assuming Andreoff ever gets some NHL numbers.

You cannot, NHL contracts are guaranteed. Buyout or 100$ (mutually-agreed upon) waivers are the only ways out unless I'm missing something.

Ahem... Voynov. :(
