Former Bruins Mike Reilly: Bought Out

Sweeney has shown over and over again that he has a knack for getting rid of the bad contracts he signed, only to sign/trade for someone even worse.

Really don't think Reilly has been that bad. He hasn't been nearly as good as he was last year but he's not playing like an AHLer either. His underlying numbers are actually quite good (6th on the team in xGF% behind only the top four forwards and McAvoy). I think the benching has more to do with Cassidy trying to push his buttons to get that urgency from last year back rather than a Moore situation. That Zboril has been so good is a welcome surprise but I think Reilly gets back in there one way or another before too long.

I'll see what he does once he gets back in the lineup before I start writing his eulogy.

Unfortunately, no system is going to fix the major problem that Reilly has right now, which is playing in his own zone with some energy and determination.

He was so soft in the playoffs last spring. I have no idea how they watched him, then elected to re-sign him and bring back Gryz. It's like they want their left side eaten alive.

And if they thought Forbort was the lockdown stud to go along with them, wow.

Reilly’s underlying stats are great and projected to be well above his cap hit expectations. They’re obviously offensively driven but it’s not matching what’s being shown on the ice.

Shocking his defensive numbers are improving haha, am I missing something?

I was surprised myself at that lol, definitely doesn't match the eye test. It's not pretty but apparently he's still getting results. If he can keep putting up numbers like that he'll have value around the league at least. I still want to see him get back to the quick decision making he was showing last year though.

It'll be interesting to see how he responds on Saturday.

Well he did play 40 games on that Ottawa team last year. I highly doubt that helped his defensive stats.

I suspect those defensive figures may have something to do with the ultimate currency in hockey - goals, or in this case more specifically goals conceded. So far this year Reilly's on ice numbers are generally slightly down - corsi, SF, SCF etc. have all dipped a bit. But there've only been 5 goals against playing 5v5 when he's out there. That's only 1 goal for every 34 minutes of ice time. In the entire rest of his career Reilly's conceded a goal every 19-25 minutes depending on the season, so 34 is a significant improvement. Undoubtedly a lot of that can be put down to him now playing in a solid, team-based defensive structure for probably the first time in his career, which despite its struggles this season is still better than most of what he's experienced. But still, 1 goal every 34 mins is good going - for comparison McAvoy generally tends to go along at 1 every 28-29, although he's gone next level this season and is currently sitting at 1 every 38.

So Reilly, despite some horrid turnovers and bad patches, is actually holding up pretty well when it comes to keeping pucks out of the Bruins' net. It's offense where he's falling further short. 5 goals against is fine, but there's also only been 5 goals for when he's on the ice 5v5. Arguably that's not good enough for a guy who's main asset is his ability to carry and move the puck through transition and in the offensive zone and who's going rate for helping his team score is normally a good 35% or so better than it is so far this year.

I wonder if that's part of Cassidy's issue at present - while his defensive game actually isn't terrible where it matters most, there are some pretty clear lapses and poor shifts, and Reilly's simply not been getting it done enough at the other end to forgive those. Still, you sense he's not too far away from finding better form, and we'll just have to see how he handles this scratching and whether it'll help him to bounce back stronger.

Not even close to a John Moore.

He can play just fine, but not an important piece, so easy to blame.

He's got skills and his game will always require working on his defensive game, working the dirty areas, but overall play isn't that bad. Hope he understands his overall defensive game is most important on this team and can fit in with how this team operates.

Think he'll figure it out, but he'll be bitched on with bad stretches, like now. Every team has these players, for the fans, and coaches.

July 27th, 2021 (day before free agency)
Pat Brisson, Mike Reilly's agent
Don Sweeney, GM of Boston Bruins
Mike Reilly, UFA

"Hi Don"
"Hi Pat,whats up?"
"Look Don, I spoke to Mike and he is willing to take an extention at the same conditions as he had but on the double. Plus a full NTC."
"Pat, I am ok to double his salary but instead of NTC I give him an extra year, that's $9mil over 3 years. How's that?"
"Eeeeeeee, let me talk to Mike."
.
.
.
few seconds later
Pat: "Mikeeeeee, I got Don on the phone, the offer from Bruins is $9million over 3 years."
Mike: "Get the f*** out of here." (wild screams follow in distance)

This is a prime example of why advanced stats are f***ing nonsense. Reilly has been lousy this season. End of story. Some random (and not sustainable) puck luck doesn't mean his mistakes and miscues haven't happened or are acceptable. They're not. He's sucked. If he continues to make them, they will eventually be capitalized on by the other team.

Advanced stats aside

my eyes say this is not a well constructed team ....it's not big nor particularly fast...and the system they continue to play has been dissected by other teams

They have some high level talent but they need a shakeup both of personnel and the line combinations

this thread is... wow. it's a crowded left until the third pairing goes LL. I'm'a head over to the Brown and injury threads and just assume y'all have taken your tiki torches to a more logical player discussion thread, like, say, Clifton's.

I wonder if he left the jar with Miles Wood’s balls in his car overnight

I didn’t think I could lose anymore respect for Miles Wood after the McAvoy hit - then I watched him play the rest of the game like he had eggs in his pocket and didn’t want to break them

Fraud player

Well... he might be covered by teammates, put in easier position, lucky and whatever. I personally don't like his compete level etc... but numbers are fact. And those says they he did his job...despite whtat I think
