Player Discussion Mike Matheson

Keeping sooooo many receipts lol

The Matheson fans are in for a hell of a rude awakening

The reality is that there will be 19 players suited up for a game and it would be impossible for everyone to like every single player. Criticism is inevitable and welcome, but the individual level fanaticism coming out as either hatred or blind love is equally nauseating.

The team that lost to Denmark? Or the organization that brought their B team to the World Juniors?

And difference is that Danault was playing those minutes and dominating them analytically. Matheson is playing those minutes and getting shelled.

~40% xGF% at 5 on 5 after the 4 nations, we are not gonna miss him once he's gone. Great skater and seemingly nice guy though.

He was considered for the 4 nations bud. You are talking about the World Championships. You can nit pick all you want.. Matheson is a victim of the Montreal player attack... just like Danault was and even Monty to some degree. So many fans are desperate to trade them away

If you search hard enough, you can find ways to devalue any player. Yeah, he's not a defensive shutdown stud but there are others like him where teams value their player without watching them obsessively for their next mistake.

Bouchard is terrible and Im not sure I would want him on a contending team, same with Hughes, but he is/they are insanely better offensively than matheson whos pretty much league average.

Its like comparing Hutson to Matheson offensively

Matheson is pretty much league average offensively? That's one way to talk about a half empty glass. I like the "pretty much" choice of words... Shows where your head is at in the deflate game.

Nothing I mentioned even requires watching him. He got absolutely demolished out there this year.

Danault was always excellent here, he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Matheson. He was a driving force behind one of the most dominant all-around lines in hockey, even if they weren't the most technically skilled.

If he was "absolutely demolished" out there this year, don't you think he would not have been considered for 4 nations and WC's? You're clearly guilty of expurgation to prove your point. If you have to go there, your point is not very good. Come on man... absolutely demolished eh?

Matheson is a very good #3 or 4 guy. Give the guy a break.... we were using him as a #1 before Hutson and his usage was too high... which means more exposure and for fans like you to see the mistakes.

Do you like Gorton and Hughes? I'm assuming so. You going to hate them and think they are idiots if they extend him on a team friendly contract?

In the last 26 games of the season (or when we went from 1 game below .500 to a playoff spot on the backs of Suzuki and Hutson), only 5 defencemen had a worse xGF%rel than Matheson (with at least 400 minutes played at 5 on 5 - so 99 dmen total).

Those players are Nic Hague (who Vegas is trying to rid themselves of for good reason), Ben Chiarot (lmao), Mateychuk (rookie on a collapsing team), Nick Leddy (been ass for years now), and Kris Letang (old and done).

Whether or not he was considered by Hockey Canada for anything isn't important, that organization is incompetently run from top to bottom.

But sure, maybe he's a 3 or 4 dman, but his many mistakes aren't fatigue-driven considering how many occur at the start of games. He's a guy who has tremendous physical tools and good character, who can be a horse on a terrible team, but without much value on a contender. We don't need him on our first pairing, don't need him on our second pairing, and have too many young guys knocking at the door of our 3rd pairing to keep him past this season.

Fatigue definitely has something to do with it. He was playing more minutes while seeing almost a minute less of PP time so those mins went to ES or PK.

A Matheson playing 21 ish mins would look vastly different than one who plays close to 26 mins

And I think I'd rather not play anyone in minutes like that and divvy them up a bit between guys like Guhle and Struble (and eventually Reinbacher) instead.

My point was that Matheson's mistakes don't increase in frequency as the game goes on, they're just reflective of who he is as a player which is fine. He's a great athlete and can play tough minutes (not well) to insulate young guys on a rebuilding team, but once that corner is turned he's pretty much outlived his usefulness to that team.

He'd be a good choice on a team like SJS or Chicago now while their young D are developing.
