Player Discussion Mike Matheson

If Hutson can get a proper RH partner, then Matheson can be paired with Carrier and Guhle with whoever (and he'll elevate their play). Once that happens his minutes/deployment can be controlled and there will be less mistakes. I suspect Matheson could be dealt next TDL if there's an interesting forward available (especially a C) and the Habs Brass have sufficient trust in Guhle and Hutson to take over the LH side of the top4, and the Huston partner, and one of Reinbacher or Carrier as the other one.

Had some oddly tough games without him. Big shortage of D who could play defense.
I think that also came from having way too many LHD and forcing them onto the right hand side.

It's very rare for a defense-first defenceman (which our bottom guys largely are) to have good enough luck skills and passing to succeed on their off-side. Only one that comes to mind off the top of my head is Brodie in his prime, and I think maybe Gavrikov plays a fair amount of RD.

Could be. It looked to me like it was a lack of experienced D, and a lack of defensive D. The lack of experience should fix itself.

The team had problems when Savard was out, and Savard is a limited player due to his age. Carrier made a huge difference, and he’s solid, but I’m not sure he’s that good, he provides something the team is completely lacking.

No but if we're going to make improvements on the team, some Quartexx guys will need to go this summer, there's not much room on this team no more stockpiling friends
You're starting to sound like @Bombshell11 does when talking about Mesar, but with Quartexx.

I don't understand why you keep harping on the Quartexx thing. Acquiring young cheap players with upside that you are familiar with to fill out your tanking/rebuilding roster is exactly what every GM would've done.

Nothing Hughes has done suggest he's putting Quartexx above the Habs needs. You're just mad he didn't take Michkov, ain't you :sarcasm:

The Quartexx info is an asset for the Habs. Hughes has more info on these guys thus is more likely to pick undervalued ones and not over-rated ones.

Matheson will get 7M on his next contract
and deservedly so. He has flaws but he's still a good player and a solid #3.
With Hutson about to make 8M+
And Guhles 5.5M kicking in

This is *exactly* why they are going to be moving Matheson

They'd much rather spend that 7M on an actual RD who is hopefully also much better defensively

It's twofold really, right now it's just the player we need to get rid of
But if he gets that contract it's him AND the money that need to go ffs lol

It actually goes back to him not taking Wright.. of course now, he pretends that he wanted Cooley the entire time.

I can't see Hutson making less than 9M. The cap is going up 30% in the next three years and he's a f***ing superstar in the making. Pay him 9-10 now if you don't want to pay 13-14M after a bridge.

The contracts will soon balloon up like crazy. McDavids and Makars of this world will start to approach the high-teens mark sooner than later.

If McDavid hit free agency tomorrow he'd get 20% of the cap offered by a few teams.

He wouldn't sign it, but it would be offered.
