Player Discussion Mike Matheson

No need to shit on the guy with nicknames, but his departure will do anything but hurt the team, he was (well, should have been) unplayable last year
I could care less about hurting his feelings, if he ever registers on this message board I'll tell him I feel shame.
I hope you're wrong about their valuation of X... And, I think the contract they gave him last year & his overall usage suggests you underestimate their perception of his value.

If they do trade him, I'd bet it's for a massive relative return (for a 6-7 dman)... Doubt he'd be "given away".

Id love for us to acquire a legit top 4 RD if the right deal or signing is there, but I also wouldn't force the issue.

If all we do is swap Savard for RB (or Mailloux, whomever wins the spot in camp) in our top 7, I think we'll be relatively unchanged in terms of D performance.
While Savard brought more to the team than many credit him for, he was not very effective at ES.

Hutson, Guhle, Strubble & Xhekaj all should be a bit stronger next season. Plateaus and setbacks are possible, but at their age, as a group they should represent a net improvment year over year.

Carrier getting a full camp on top of his quick adjustment last year should also equate to a bit of improvement.

Matheson could well benefit from Guhle/Hutson further alleviating his workload.

Hutson Guhle
Matheson Carrier
Xhekaj Strubble
RB/Mailloux

That's not a bad status quo and affords the team the luxury of being patient rather than needing to overpay in a summer where demand will be up considerably.

Man I hope Guhle stays healthy, without him that blueline seriously falls apart, he's an anchor.

So he’s third pairing but playing 25 minutes per game? I agree the habs were short of a good top 4 this year, and Matheson might not be top 4 on better teams, but he’s playing top minutes on the habs. Trying go get current players to take those minutes will expose a bunch of guys. If they trade him for a better D, fine. If they acquire enough D that he is superfluous, fine. For the moment the team needs his minutes.
It wont expose anyone as Hutson and Guhle are the plays that are going to absorb those minutes.

I don't think there's any team in the league where Matheson isn't playing top 4 min. Just look at the conference finalists... Easily top 4 on each of those rosters.

Hutson will play 30 minutes a game? Guhle will play 25? Guhle is already fragile and Hutson has about as many minutes as he can handle.
Why would we play a 3rd pairing LD for 5 minutes a game? You can easily do something like 23-21-16 without issue. Top 2 pairings starting next season should be Hutson-Struble (with more offensive starts) and Guhle-Carrier (more defensive starts). If Struble shows that last year was a fluke playing with Hutson than we can reevaluate, but Matheson doesn't fit anywhere into that top 4. 16 minutes a night against medium competition though? He'd probably do a lot better.

He’s earned 6x7m (10% going to Quartexx)
It will be a telling summer, we have effectively reached maximum capacity of Quartexx contracts and we need to make improvements on the roster.

Newhook and Matheson seem like the obvious choices to move on from, considering we need to improve our size and defensive play, but they are the 2 players closest to Hughes.

If we extend Matheson and don't address other concerns with the roster beyond trading for a struggling Quartexx player/Gorton draft pick, I will seriously lose all faith with this management group

Yeah at this point there is already too much cronyism but results didn’t matter as much… now they will so even a few more crony moves will utterly stink.

A professional organization would purposefully eschew former clients to discourage any chance of misappropriation. Not the Habs under Molson.

They can play the 7-8 minutes more that the 3rd LD cant. Its as simple as that.
Matheson played more minutes than any other D. Hutson was already playing 25 minutes per game by the end of the season. Guhle and Carrier were a bit over 20. Savard is gone, and he was getting old, but the D looked bad when he was out.

Carrier was good, but didn’t really look like he’d thrive with more minutes. Hutson shouldn’t play more than the 25 he already had. Guhle could play a bit more, but he’s fragile enough playing a bit over 20. If you get rid of Matheson the 5 remaining D would normally play about 90 of the 120 minutes that need to be covered. You are short a good D, and there are significant minutes to cover. Someone will probably switch sides, so I’m not looking at handedness.

If you demote Matheson you play Carrier, Guhle, Struble, and Xhekaj more. I’m not convinced Xhekaj and Struble outplay Matheson in more tough minutes.

Either way you probably need to add a D or have an existing player improve a lot.

Is there actually a rule somewhere about how many contracts/players you can have from one agent company?
No but if we're going to make improvements on the team, some Quartexx guys will need to go this summer, there's not much room on this team no more stockpiling friends

I wouldn't say we looked worse with Savard out of the lineup, he was noticeably our worst defenceman (with the exception of Mailloux)

He was definitely done, but the team struggled when he wasn't available, at least until they got Carrier. The D is really young and thin. They may constitute a strength once they reach their peaks, but it was a weakness this year. They really need to add at least one more good over 23 D if they want to compete next year.

Guhle - Hutson
Matheson - Carrier

as our top-4 for next season. Mark it.

I'd like to see Xhekaj - Mailloux start as punishing 3rd pairing, but I haven idea what St-Louis wild with his 3rd pairing. I really wish that Reinbacher gets some more conditioning in Laval to start the season.

If we fail to add a top-4 RHD then I wouldn't be surprised if they sign a fringe guy who could end up either on the bottom pair, as 7th D, or even sent to Laval all depending on how training camp goes for Mailloux/Reinbacher. Obviously you're hoping one if not both come to camp and show that they are ready for the NHL, but I'm not sure you can really pencil either of them into the lineup so having a backup plan makes sense.

So you'd be against adding Bennett, or Marchment, or Kadri, or Marner or Zacha...

Shoot, you'd better hope the majority of posters on this board are wrong because those are largely the forwards whose names get most brought up as who we should target this summer lol

And I guess we should trade Hutson rather than extending him. Can't commit long term to another Quartexx player, right
