Player Discussion Mike Matheson

Matheson's value peaked last year when he put up 62 points (and frankly should have been traded). He's likely closer to Petry value now (when we traded him).

Montembeault I don't agree with. Play out his contract as a starter unless he loses the net to Dobeš in which case his cap hit isn't terrible for a backup.
That’s where I disagree, GMs will always look at the full body of work and like it or not a D in the eyes of a GM is all about an individual who can play all game situations vs pts specialist.

Matheson’s ability to carry the 25TOI+ workload, play vs tough opposition matchups & be employed on both PP & PK units, makes him much more valuable given his AAV is $4.875M - because cap hit trumps all in transactions unless it’s a super elite talent.

Except he doesn't do any of that well (except maybe PKing). He does not do well in the 5 on 5 minutes he plays, offensively or defensively.

You trade him aa a veteran presence grab a pick or somethign and call it a day. Need to find a different style of mobile defensive dman, we have enough offense on the blue line

I’m not trying to convince anyone, and I don’t think HuGo & MSL care what anyone else thinks IMO… Matheson is their type of guy so would not shock me if he’s reupped
Actually there's *no way* they 're-up' Matheson now, it's just not in the cards for him anymore
And it's chiefly because of Hutson's emergence/New Guhle contract kicking in.
Guhle and Slaf are getting *big* raises next year, from combined salary of 1.8M to now *13.1M*

Reinbacher coming in, couple of years will need a raise
If they sign a RD that's more money there as well
And Barron's 1.1M turned into Carriers 3.75M

And so,
In 1 year from now
Both Hutson and Matheson will need a new Contract for the same role
Somebody's getting that 7+M deal
And it AINT going to be Matheson.
I can *promise* you that

If I know this, They know this.
He's an offensive Dman who has lost his role on the team, what his role is now can be replaced by a MUCH better actual DEFENDER

The question is, do they trade him at the draft, the summer, next trade deadline, or the least likely scenario let him walk
The other question is trade him in a package for a C or a RD?

Honestly it can be fun problem to have as a GM
The only way to screw it up and make it NOT fun would be inexplicably re-sign him

Guhle can easily take over his PK duties and minutes (they'll be less anyway) and his current salary
And Hutson has ALREADY replaced him on PP1 for crying out loud

Guys, he is as good as gone lol trust me
It's mathematical certainty
