Player Discussion Mike Matheson

Dude was looking like Chris Wideman towards the end. I wouldn't mind if he played 30% less but the amount of TOI he's given is just madness.

Some players play best with confidence - think Malkin, Hutson, Makar.

Matheson plays best with no confidence - any time he gets confident he does really really dumb things.

If he isnt willing to drop down to playing 18ish minutes a game then trade him. He's a liability.
It’s not willingness, it was a case of desperate need without having any other options… it’s why this hate is so confusing.

Everyone knows Matheson is ideally suited for 2nd pair roll w 18-20TOI. Guhle’s injuries and inexperience was a major reason what MM got that additional TOI

They have other options. It’s stupid they are unwilling to have young defencemen make young defenceman errors but are willing to watch this bozo do something egregiously stupid 3 times a game with no repercussions.

What other options? Guhle’s has lost significant playing time due to injuries over last two seasons otherwise he’d already be absorbing TOI w Matheson dropping to 22-23 TOI

Habs had only 3Dman capable of playing over 20TOI - Matheson’s, Guhle & Hutson

I’d rather Struble and Xhekaj make the odd error and learn rather than this guy make constant errors and refuse to learn.

I mean he’s an offensive defenceman who had 4 points in his last 26 games. How does anyone still think he should get 25 mins a game is beyond me.

Neither can kill penalties, which is rhe only reason Savard kept getting put in, and Xhekaj is a fringe NHL caliber 6Dman at best

Habs wouldnt have been close to sniffing a playoff spot if Xhekaj had 5-10 TOi extra

Now Guhle’s got 3 full seasons under his belt & an excellent playoff run, he’s going to be leaned on a lot I expect next season.

Redenbacher will likely have 2nd pairing RD.

Anderson couldn’t kill penalties before this season. Teach them.

Plus I’m just talking next season. He needs to go.

Anderson has been PK since juniors in London. He was 1st unit PK for CBJ w Boone Jenner

The previous Habs regime tried to make him a top-6 vs what he is a top end 3rd liner PK w size & high end speed

Killing penalties is the easiest thing to coach lol. Savard is also numerically a worse PKer than Xhekaj, I don't know about Struble though.

And you don’t think Arber and Struble killed penalties in juniors? Anyone that’s ever been an NHL player was an elite junior player that likely played all situations.

Whatever, you’re not going to convince me on Matheson staying.

I watched Struble on 1st PK unit w St. Sebastian’s prep & he played PK for Northeastern as well. Can’t compare skating balance, speed & edgwork, Struble’s is significantly superior to Xhekaj

I’m not trying to convince anyone, and I don’t think HuGo & MSL care what anyone else thinks IMO… Matheson is their type of guy so would not shock me if he’s reupped

Personally I’d trade both Diekembe & Matheson this summer - I think both their market values are at their peaks after this past season

Matheson's value peaked last year when he put up 62 points (and frankly should have been traded). He's likely closer to Petry value now (when we traded him).

Montembeault I don't agree with. Play out his contract as a starter unless he loses the net to Dobeš in which case his cap hit isn't terrible for a backup.
