Carrier is miles above Matheson defensively. Theres a reason Carrier is always at the top of every defensive metrics and Matheson is at the bottom. Matheson is soft as all hell around the net and hes also pretty bad at breaking up the cycle because hes brainless. The amount of time he comes out with the puck just to cough it back up is astounding.

Guhle-Carrier was the best defensive pairing in the league for the time they were together, the team started their losing skid the moment MSL broke it up.

I mean if he's coming out with the puck that means he's successfully breaking up the cycle.

Matheson has too many bad giveaways, but it's been much improved this season, likely do to him not being as overplayed as previous years, but because people view him as a giveaway machine every giveaway sticks out more firmly in peoples mind, whereas others can make a terrible giveaway and have it be forgotten quickly.

No, no, he doesnt breakup the cycle because he gives it back up immediatly.

Also sure, it sticks out more, theres a reason it does and its because hes god awful.

We are clearly not watching the same game. And given the coaching staff is being payed millions of dollars to get things right and they clearly believe in Matheson's defensive game, I'm comfortable to leave it as agree to disagree.

Never a dull moment around here. It's funny and disturbing at the same time reading the overly emotional and often irrational shredding apart of a player and his shortcomings. All players have them and that is why it is a team sport and crucial to construct the team appropriately,do so and success will follow.

I get the passionate emotional rant at the spur of the moment, but afterwards,come on! it's just plain silly. The same can be said about the excessive heaping of praise, often it is not justified and simply an overreaction by the enamored.

To me when he is overplayed he makes huge mistakes , when he plays normal minutes he looks great .
Am I the only one seeing that ?
 
I don't want to hate on the guy too hard, I really dislike the way fans pile up on players, but that was a real ugly game last night. There's something in Mathesons decision making process where it's like if there's a few different options, his mind always ends up going with the most unnecessarily difficult one where even if it works out it still wasn't the best play.

Like where he fell last night giving Michkov the breakaway goal; everybody loses an edge sometimes, but he had zero need to try to make a hard cut back to his left. He had the entire right side to protect the puck and wait for his D partner to support.

That's what makes Hutson so impressive as a rookie. He's able to make these calls correctly at a very high rate.

I don't know how Marty can sit there and have benched Dach, Slaf, Xhekaj, Struble this year and let Matheson continue to play after those terrible turnovers.

Those were the worst turnovers of the entire season and he's just back out there.

Until Marty holds his vets accountable, we are gonna get play like this.

I get people saying this, I really do
Yes , we could focus on ANYONE else on the team and have eyes ONLY for their f*** ups and it 'doesn't seem fair'

We actually get all that
This ISNT about that entirely
The issue is, KEEPING him around more than we need(ed) him, HIM specifically

Because we DID need him for a bit of 'mentoring' and all that jazz you need from 'Vets'
We are NOW at a point we DO NOT need him anymore
Because if you want him around longer , he is now on the other side of 30
And will he making 6-7 million$ until hes what, Thirty f***ing six?? When we now actually need every dollar to sign all the kids
Who are no longer staying 'kids', lot of these guys 100+ NHL games now and getting older

Matheson AND Savard have outlived their usefulness to the team, we needed them when we were finishing dead last the last 3 years
We don't need them anymore

So having said all that
ON TOP OF EVERYTHING Matheson has played FAR too many games this year where has been absolutely TERRIBLE
If he's played 10 good games he's played 50 awful ones

He cannot be extended, he cannot continue to block Hutson, Guhle, Xhekaj and even Struble now on the left side

He will be traded in the summer, 100%
The question is will it be for 2C or RD

A) him + other stuff can for sure (we might DESPISE him but there is 100% a couple of sucker GM's who are probably dying to get him) just gotta find the one that undervalues his own 2C
B) he f***ing better be, and I know Gorton will pull the trigger, Hughes is 'emotionally compromised' on this one
