Player Discussion Mike Matheson

Please someone fire Matheson into the sun
Well Hughes was recently interviewed and said they would soon have to make decisions on which dmen to keep. He included Matheson in the conversation, saying they would have to make a decision on whether to extend him or not.

I take that as good news that they are going to analyze his play. His play should make the decision for them. That and it's not MSL's decision, thankfully.

This was literally in Basu's article about him like a week ago:
Almost exactly two years ago, on March 16, 2023, Matheson was preparing to face the Florida Panthers in Sunrise, Fla., and was reminiscing about his time there and how his last game with the organization was spent in a suit and tie as a healthy scratch.

“I don’t look back at my time here in Florida and go like, ‘I got screwed.’ I didn’t,” Matheson said prior to that game. “I didn’t play well. And that was all on me. I was a risky player that wasn’t defending very well. As a coach, that’s not a good person to have on the ice.”

The worst part is: he's the same dude and plays the exact same way. The problem is we are throwing him out there for 25+ minutes a night and expecting different results.

And people want to re-sign this guy to 6+ million a year. Gross.

I'm a strong supporter of Matheson, but already before this season I've expressed the opinion that his future usefulness to this team will largely depend on how Hutson adapts to the NHL.

With Hutson having a historic season and Engstrom in the fold, I don't think we should extend Mike into his 30s.

We will need a top 4 RHD for next season, though.

Welcome to Montreal!!

He play really good hockey since he is a Penguins Pittsburgh, happy to have him.
LMFAO, you have to be kidding me right? He's atrocious defensively and can only carry the puck in a straight line. He had one good "LUCKY" offensive year where every puck he touched turned into a point. He's a turnover machine and for whatever reason this bone head coach loves him!!!!!

Here are his career stats to prove last year was a fluke, even in a career high points year he managed to be a -24. Previous to last year his best year was 34 points!
He's a defensive liability end of story causes more goals against than he generates offence.

I think that you responded to a two year old post.

Get off the editables man, Matheson is ridiculously bad! Has nothing to do with the emergence of Hutson. Matheson had a career year, almost doubling his point totals from any other year while still managing a -24.

It's the day of the trade. I'm always happy when a new guy come to my favorite team.

But since we have him, I always said, TRADE HIM. I hate his game. I hate everything about Matheson.

You are not the only one.

Kent Hughes would be the worst stock broker in the world, he has no idea when to sell.
Kulak for a 2nd
Petry for Matheson
Barron for Carrier
Toffoli for 1st and Heineman
Chiarot for a 1st, then trading up to get Hage

There have been some good ones. But yes he hasn't batted 1.000.

Would have been painful short term to sell at the deadline. But the player we could draft may haveen worth the short term pain.

I still think you can trade him for something substantial.

Hughes could've traded him last summer when his value peaked, but our youngsters weren't ready.

Thinking his TOI might get some dumbass GM to overpay this summer.

I've been on the Matheson hatred and negative energy bandwagon for years.

It's the no-brainers that make me mad. Savard and MM . Savard has lost all his value, and for what? The more MM players, the more his value plummets. Honestly Barron lost all his value after his first year here, he should have been dumped at the draft a while ago.

Yes the Kulak trade was nice, so was TT and Chiarot

The time to trade him was last year, you're looking at a Petry return at this point (who we also waited way too long to trade).

Feels like a pretty basic rule of thumb that if a guy is having a career year at 30 or older and won't be a core piece when you're competing, you should trade him when his value is highest but what do I know.

He's playing the same average ice time as defenders like Seider, Josi, Heiskanen. He's 9th in the league for ice time by D. He's not in that tier of player obviously but this is what happens when bad teams have to put guys in positions that are above their paygrade.

Other GMs aren't as dumb as the fans, he still has trade value. He's been terrible lately but he's playing vs other top lines which he shouldn't be and playing way too many minutes. If he get's put into a team where he can play sheltered minutes on a 2nd pair he will look better. He's only 31 and still an elite skater.

He has no place on this team going forward though. Now that Lane has proven himself to be an elite puck moving defenseman at the NHL level, you can move on from Matheson and surround Lane with big stay at home guys. Still, Matheson played valuable mintutes the past 3 seasons for the team and played in way over his head for his entire stay here. Playing number 1 minutes on a rebuilding team for a guy making under 5 million dollars, I don't know what people were expecting.
