Keep in mind if Hutson is given the pressure to "save" our PP and doesn't that's going to be tough on him mentally, it could cause him to lose confidence which we absolutely want to avoid. Not being on the 1st unit also means his focus is on learning the ins and outs of being a regular NHL D. Slafkovsky's development likely benefited from not playing on the PP right away but instead having that slower build up of responsibilities, doing the same with Hutson is probably the right call, he already has a lot on his plate being asked to be a top-4 D. Let him fully digest that before giving him additional responsibilities.

So how long until we stop playing favourites and take this guy as far away from the PP as possible?
Not a threat to shoot
Not deceptive at the Line
Zero vision

Hutson and even Barron would be an upgrade

i'm going to say 15ish games of sub-20% efficiency

by mid-november Hutson will be on the top unit if the team isn't middle of the pack in the league PP standings

Matheson won't put up the numbers he put up last year IMO. Hutson will take away some of his offensive usage. It's OK... doesn't mean Matheson sucks. Just means Hutson provides more value.

Watching that 5/3 PP last night was painful. Too much complacency and wasting time. Hutson is one that manages open space well... he's shot is not as strong as Matheson's but he is not afraid to shoot it! It's the same as Marner at the point for the Leafs... he's not going to shoot it and the D knows it.

62 points last year. 5 goals 23 assists on the powerplay. He's erratic, but you're wrong.

What does his point total have to do with the PP? Try responding to the post within its context.

I hope you right. I was at the game yesterday. Not a good look.

To be fair a lot of his points come off the rush, PP or not. He's not a reliable QB. His mobility lets him get a lot of free secondary assists from Nick Suzuki who is the real anchor. He's a good option but I don't think the PP would be worse with Hutson on the point instead so Nick could move up further. Take away mathesons speed and he's on nobody's first wave PP.

I knew Habs hockey was truly back when Matheson gave the puck away behind the net on the first shift and we were hemmed in for a good minute and a half.
Everyone had some miscues he also made some equally good play. Seem some keep complaining about Matheson, he was still one of the best player on the ice… we saw a game vs. what should be a contender and who would you rather have their #1 D, Reilly is worst on D, less physical and worst contract. Matheson isn’t perfect but he is still better than 80%+ of all NHL D not sure why he keep getting sigle out and used as punching for some fan.

I'm about to dissect every single PP point he's got if another bozo comes up with the 23 PP points excuse to tell me he's a great PP qb.

I'm unemployed for 11 days, DO NOT tempt me.
I don't see many people claiming he's great, I see people defending him from claims that he sucks. Pretending the only two options are he's great or he sucks is just a strawman.

At $4.875M, he does not need to be great.

You know why. Because he is "holding back" Hutson, who by the way is even worse defensively, by a wide margin.

He is being sigling out for every mistake because he is holding back (which likely means he is trying to limits is mistake…) doesn’t make much sense… How many minute did he play last night? Is he holding back or is he trying to pick is spot when the team as a one goal lead… Even if he was holding back he is still the best D on the ice most night…

He sucks though.
The only way he would be good is if he tightened down on defense a lot and he was asked to not create offensively, and even then, he'd be a liability for his decision making under pressure. He's a victim of his own IQ and very flawed as a player on both sides of the ice.

Yes he can make spectacular rushes and he does have good physical abilities, but beyond that, he's nothing. Either he's used as a , 4v5, 4v4 3v3 specialist or he's a liability. Not on my team, personally.
