Player Discussion Mike Matheson

At least MAB at that canon of a slap shot and could be somewhat useful on a 2nd PP wave. It's not much but it's something.

Traverse had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The guy was just brutal in every facet of the game. He is my GOAT worst D without any hesitation

MAB's shot was 1st wave worthy actually. He scored 13 goals for the Habs in 60 games.

He also had 14 and 15 goal seasons.

Also scored a big goal in that game 7 upset against the caps.

Hes playing 2nd pair right now, Guhle and lately, Struble have both faced the tougher matchups. Matheson is deployed in a similar manner to Desharnais back in the days, his ozone starts are through the roof, his QOC isnt high, hes playing with the best lines, etc.

Also hes never been a 2nd pair guy before this year.

Did Desharnais play on the PK?

Maybe i'm saying 2nd wave because back then we had Markov , Subban and Hamrlik. And all of them were better fit on the 1st PP unit than MAB imho

But yes that slap shot was truly something. Dude had a bomb for sure and could score goals with it no doubt about that

Yeah we were gifted on the backend back then. A spot opened up for mab at the time partly because Markov was hurt alot. Subban was good, but also a rookie.

Regardless, mab had the best shot of any Habs dman back in 2010. At that stage of his career, I don't think hamrlik belonged Iin a conversation of good powerplay options, though.

Congratulations to him for his 100th game with the Habs today. Crazy stats since we got him. Also, 8th most TOI for defensemen in the NHL for the last two seasons.

He is a 1D. Plays like one and the number support it.

Plenty of mistake, i know, but that goes with his style and what makes him great.

What a steal of a trade.

Matheson trade has been great for us. We dumped the Petry contract along with Poehling for Matheson and a 4th round pick which became Bogdan Konyushkov. Then we re-acquired Petry got a 2nd back. Flipped Petry again for a 4th. Whilst dumping Hoffman.

He's surprisingly underappreciated by many posters...

Not his fault he's used as a 1A dman and at times falls short compared to the best top pairing guys in the league.

He gives us tremendous cap value and seems to fully embrace the responsibility the coaches place on him without any overt signs of frustration... Impressive considering how green the d corps as a whole is.

Short of an offer we simply can't refuse, I see him staying put through this contract, and that's a net positive for us in the transition towards a cup contending roster

Don't look now but Poehling has 1 point less than the highly admired and coveted, by some the experts here, KK.

I had reservations about giving up Poehling. He had great WJC and first game in Montreal. I think concussion at his first camp derailed his career.

This post is actually pretty funny since Kotkaniemi is 18 months younger than Poehling.

As in, Ryan was seen as a "bust" just 18 months ago. Just as a quick example, Poehling got traded exactly 19 months ago.

He's got like double the amount of games though. Amount of games is just as important if not more than the age of the player. Everyone loves to bring up Tage Thompson as an example of a player who broke out late, yet Thompson has less NHL games than KK.

As previously mentioned, players develop differently. It's foolish to predict what a player will be when young and not fully mature.

Getting out of Montreal was the best thing for him. Getting Matheson for Petry and Ryan was a fair deal and Matheson has been terrific offensively for Montreal. He gets dumped on here but it's not deserved and he should have been the one to represent Montreal at the All star game as far as I'm concerned, but I'll bet he's glad he wasn't the one. I for one would prefer they do away with the game.

What? Over Suzuki whos clearly the Habs best player? Laughable. Stats sheets dont tell a story.

Suzuki is head and shoulders better offensively and defensively and hes clearly A LOT more skilled.

Yes, thats why its funny.
You are aware that it is extremely common for that on this site do you not? I've glanced at the Slafskovsky thread and many others and the predictions are ludicrous. I really don't understand why so many waste their time making silly predictions, but it's their time and free to do as they like.

You literally did the very thing you criticize for Kotkaniemi in the earliest post I quoted.

Why not both? both are deserving and Nick has done it already,,who wants to go to this farce anyways.

I wonder if he moves Matheson? Can get big haul. Could be another Anderson, hang on too long. Matheson be 30 in few days.

If they do,it will be massive,it has to be massive. I'd prefer not until they have someone ready to step in and replace him but there is not one currently able to do that.

It'd be nice to trade him for a good return so I don't have to watch him spend entire powerplays with his back turned to Slaf for the next two years.
