What would it take for Vancouver to get him I would add Hoglander, a 2nd or a 3rd I would be curious to know how close that would be to getting him?

Mike Matheson is LHD standing at 6'2" and has 17 points in 32 games while playing 24:26 minutes a night.

I am assuming he could be made available especially with Guhle, Hutson taking up the left side and with the added assets they can add a RHD during the off season, and they would get a better draft Position with Matheson not in their lineup.

Also he has 2 years left at 4.875 million and is 30 years old.

Obviously a valuable piece, although please refrain from saying he is not available or won't be traded as I am more interested in scoping his value rather than you just assuming it's never going to happen.

Edit: Seems like I have overvalued him according to the comments, would Hoglander and 2nd work? I edited the proposal cause I can only get roasted so much lol.

Oh man a Matheson-Myers pairing would be incredible. Pure unfiltered hockey comedy.

I don't think he's worth nearly what you're talking about. Matheson plays defense if you can even call it that fast and loose. Great skater, moves the puck pretty well but an absolute liability defensively. Don't want to hear anything about 'the system' or 'if he played on a good team' either, he was the same with Florida and Pittsburgh. He's also not going to get the same powerplay time playing behind Hughes as he does in Montreal either.

On the other hand Canucks for whatever reason decided to fill their blueline like they were shopping exclusively at the big and tall morons who can't make a pass store. So maybe he'd give them something they need.

Canucks first, second and Desharnais for Matheson?

Hoglander small forward we have no use for.

The Canucks are desperate for D but surely they can do better than Matheson?

I still remember when he body slammed Pettersson as a rookie and gave him a concussion because he was salty that Pettersson dangled him.

I don't think he's worth a crazy amount. Matheson plays defense if you can even call it that fast and loose. Great skater, moves the puck pretty well but an absolute liability defensively. Yeah. There's a chance that Matheson's mobility would add something useful to a Canucks blueline mix that is missing that a bit. But more likely, it'd just be an absolute trainwreck with a guy who doesn't particularly play within any sort of apparent system...just sort of makes it up as he goes i think.

And as mentioned, without the same PP time, the points aren't going to be there either.

Mostly, i just really don't know who his "partner" would be in Vancouver. You're not going to play him with Hughes and Hronek has pretty firmly cemented his role on that pairing. So...do you play Matheson with Myers for an absolute circus? Not great. Play either Matheson or Soucy on their off side which Tocchet/Foote don't like to do. Play him with Brannstrom or Desharnais if he's not part of the deal going the other way?

Matheson is basically box score catnip. Fine on a team that isn't really trying to contend at the moment, can eat a ton of minutes in that role and help shelter some kids by keeping them out of the worst minutes...but on a team with contending aspirations, he's just such a liability on the bad aspects of his game, and so much less of a positive on the good aspects.

I'm not sure they would. He's pretty much lost his job on the starting powerplay now, and he's a liability at 5v5. Montreal might actually win more games running Hutson, Guhle, Xhekaj down the left and Carrier, Savard, and some shutdown guy on the right, simply by allowing less high danger chances against.

I really think it's worth noting that 9 of his 17 points this season came in October. In the last 21 games he only has 8 points.

Fan of both teams, I thoutght Matheson could be a nice add for VAN, adding some puck moving skills behind Hughes. He is overused in MTL but I think he could make a good second pair with Soucy / Myers. Ideally I would prefer a RHD to keep Soucy on the left but I think Matheson would still make VAN better.

Value wise something between Chiarot and Muzzin value would likely make the deal work. If Desharnais goes the other wzy / some retention is included that could be a very good deal for VAN.

Vancouver is clearly a fit for Matheson, I've heard it a couple of times in Montreal journalists podcasts as well (as a fit, not as a rumor).

I won't say what you don't want to hear, so I'll talk on the future and past tense instead :-P

Before MTL acquired Carrier, Desharnais and the 2025 1st would probably have been the price.

In a near future, the price will be: you have to convince Martin St. Louis to resign first. The coach is at the stage of using soft swearing words in press conference on questions surrounding the backup goalie. I wonder what it would mean for him to lose his 26m+ second PP go-to guy.

If you manage to do that, I guess the typical 1st + B prospect + Desharnais if you guys still want to dump him

Nobody wants Hoglander or Desharnais. Given that Montresl just added a veteran. D in sn effort to insulate their young D, I doubt they're looking to move Matheson right now for anything shy of a clear overpayment

Yet every team has asked for him whenever a trade goes down with us, funny how that works, nobody wants him yet everyone asks for him.......

Matheson will most likely fetch a 1st (or 2 2nds or a 2nd and a 2nd round equivalent prospect).. gotta admit that he hasn't been as good as last year tho

i think OPs offer is pretty fair value-wise (don't like Hoglander's $$ tho), problem is Hoglander is a very redundant piece for us, we need another Heineman-type player

are you taking habs fan out for dinner before screwing us?

62 pts last year, on pace for 50 this year.
Overplayed as a no 1 or 2 but an excellent 2nd pairing dman
with elite skating, some grit - but sometimes questionable hockey sense...
but he's a hab so obviously he has very little worth to the usual crowd.
