You always beat me to the punch, Empoleon…

Mike Lange is a legend of commentary. My favorite Lange-isms:

“Scratch my back with a hacksaw.”

“Slap me silly, Sidney!”

“Make me a milkshake, Malkin!”

“(Goalie) just lost his liquor license.”

And of course just the way he would say “HEEEEEEEEEE SHOOTS AND SCORES. Ohhh baby!”

RIP to the legend in the city of Pittsburgh and the sport in general.

Lange will be remembered for his goofy non-sequitur goal calls more than anything else - which I'm sure he wouldn't mind - but it bears repeating that in his prime, he was an outstanding play-by-play guy who made just about every game exciting. His presence on Pens broadcasts has been sorely missed since his retirement. There will never be another PBP announcer quite like him.

Absolutely. Great voice and feel for the game.

Yeah I only learned this super recently but Lange was a commentator for the Penguins before Lemieux was even drafted. I remember listening to a game on youtube that was from like 1979 and was really surprised to hear his iconic voice. He was on either the TV or radio in Pittsburgh for them for damn near 40 years.

He was also an announcer for the Pirates way back in the day too:

Listening to Lange here just makes me feel how special his voice was, that routine play in baseball is so much more exciting listening to him.

We're not supposed to talk about it, but screw it. I was a roulette dealer in a past life. Mike was a frequent visitor. He was quiet, but couldn't have been a nicer guy. He was just there to gamble and not give a shit about anything else. I would briefly talk hockey sometimes but he just liked to stay quiet and unassuming, outside of hitting a 29 and calling it 'The Ol 29er'.

He was playing on a table with 2...urban people. Nice, but definitely had no idea who he was. The one guy hit a nice win and went crazy. It was cool. Mike looked over, smirked, and said "He's smiling like a butchers dog!".

At that point, my face was probably the face of someone who just seen Jesus Christ himself. I couldnt believe what i just saw. At that point, the other two people were looking at me like I was a total idiot. I just told them, you don't understand what just happened. It was great.

That's my stupid Mike Lange story. Rest in Power to a hockey, and Pittsburgh legend.
