Had a BRUTAL start to the season but been back to his old self second half of the year having 37 points in 43 games since Jan 1. 2C who plays a fairly sound defensive game.

Rangers wanna ship out a lot of guys this summer, and mika is at the top of the list. Who would be a reasonable trade partner?

And lets do the real life proposals, not the HF, “hes worth nothing and you need to trade 5 1sts with him”.

Which teams can actually afford him and then which of them would actually want him for another 5 years? Then on top of that he has a NMC.

If there’s any year the rangers would be able to move him it would be this offseason. Between the cap rising and everyone needing a 2C it’s probably doable.

Depending on how much salary more specifically dead salary is going back to the Rangers I could see the Jones to Florida trade being a similar type of situation.

If he gets traded this off-season I’d expect it to be to a contender who feels their window is closing, needs a top 6 center, and who struck out on their top choices in FA and trade. Rangers probably retain 1-2 million and take on a cap dump and acquire a late first in exchange.

Zibanejad still has a lot to offer and can still easily be a 60+ point player, who plays a primary role in all situations, but like Kreider and the other vets, they have lost their passion to play for this team.

Drury forcing Trouba and Goodrow out the door, two players who had a massive locker room presence and very close to the other vets players, kinda soured the entire aura and morale of the team.

Some players have checked out and will not give their all whilst Drury and Laviolette are still here. Zibanejad stills has value and can be a strong contributer for most teams.

I think there's enough desperation for top-6 C out there that he will get some interest, but the age (turns 32 in a week) and contract (5 more seasons, 8.5 mil AND a full NMC) means the Rangers will need to either retain or take bad salary back and the return would be not much.

And that's assuming Zibanejad would waive his NMC and be open to multiple teams that would be interested, which seems like a stretch.

  • Turns 32 next week
  • Has 5 more years at $8.5m AAV
  • Has another year at $10m actual salary
It's been a sharp fall off this year, but one could easily argue that the drop started last year when his production fell 19 points from his career high in 22-23. I just don't think a lot of teams are lining up to take the entirety of that contract. Even with 25% retention, I don't see the return being a lot simply because of the age of the player and the years remaining.

correct me if im wrong but didnt his game bounce back after jt miller joined the rangers

now obviously there are other players that im sure zibby can be successful with but it seems like a heavy risk for teams to take for a player with 5 years left

that being said a team like nashville also is probably going to look to shake things up. Something around stamkos for zibanejad?

Most teams will be able to afford him with the massive salary cap increase for the next few years. Expect nearly a $20m increase on the cap over the next to years.
You failed to address the other two points in my post. Which teams would actually want him for another 5 years? Then on top of that he has a NMC.

Contract. Age. Play. Adds up to a guy who is going to cost the Rangers to move. First he’s got to agree to any move. What team would he be will to go to that would Want him? Just can’t see the stars aligning with Zib accepting a move and the compensation needed to add to him so that it works. Seems like he’s a Ranger.

He is how old and have how many years left?

Data shows many players production fall off s cliff in the 30-34 yr Olds periods. The uncertainty is when

Rangers would need to eat 50% to get anything worthwhile

Sure a rebuilding team like Chicago could handle his contract. San Jose could too. Bother teams? Jusy because the cap is going up means teams can afford him.

If he had say just 1-3 yrs left some would take thr risk. But he has FIVE YEARS.

Just looking at his 5-on-5 scoring in that time and I'm not sure it makes me think someone would want that entire salary especially for five more years. Retention would have to come into play.

ZiB has a full NMC. Would he accept a trade to a rebuilding team that’s at the bottom of the league?
