Remember the time Zibanejad hustled with a forecheck and knocked a player over to steal the puck and score the game winner? Good times. Guess we'll have to wait for March for that intensity.
Mika is signed through 2030 at $8.5M/yr with a full no-movement clause the entire way through
He's yet to show up at an optional skate. Panarin and Laf have yet to miss one. Now that those two are tasked with getting him going it would be nice to see him show up and participate with his new line mates.
It's eventually going to come that we will have to buy this guy out. 5 years left after this season, going to suck for the cap hit but he is going to drag this team down for that entire contract if this is how he plays, and he's only going to get worse and worse over the years.
Retain would be the only way. You cannot spend 11+ million on a goalie and then buy somebody out for 7ish million on the cap. Retaining on ZIbanejad or some injury would be the only way. Obviously they would try and seek a trade first where they don't need to retain, but right now that doesn't seem likely. He has a buyout proof contract. All the bonuses make it so that you'd essentially be paying him to go away while taking on almost his entire cap hit and then losing some space on the back end of the buyout term as you normally would.
Might as well keep him around and see whether or not he is someone you can shelf on LTIR at some point or see if there is some role where you can find some use for him.
