Mika Zibanejad

The steep decline of Mika Zibanejad continues, that contract extension might be the thing that sinks the rangers for the foreseeable future. He was never a dominant force, nbut his play since last season has deteriorated even more than I anticipated it would.

I think the reason he looks slower is mostly tied to confidence. Same reason that people thought Laf and Kakko couldn't play at NHL pace; they were just too much in their own heads.

I was always confident that both the kids would work it out as they developed, but it's a taller task for Mika. Maybe he just needs to embrace being a shutdown centre/PP specialist, and he'll find himself playing more freely.

There's a big gap between saying Mika is a soy boy loser and Mika just seems like the type that treats the NHL as a job and merely as a paycheck and doesn't have the determination of even an average NHLer.

It’s the old will vs skill argument. The will is so lackluster right now that the skill part doesn’t even seems like he has it anymore. And that’s not me saying he doesn’t care. But I don’t understand how from the outside he can be so tone deaf to what we’re seeing when we watch. There’s such a disconnect it doesn’t make sense.

Something will give sooner or later, either he figures it out or this will come to a head another way.

Now this is the kind of shit posting that forces people to defend him even when he plays like dog shit.

At his absolute best he was dominating the ice and arguably a top 10 player in the league.
Nope, you need to be a play driver while producing at 5v5 to be in that realm. He’s never been that. Hes always been more of an opportunistic scorer. Every time he’s matched up in the playoffs against a top center he gets dominated.

That was one season and then the next season he was awful until halfway through. Just not enough. That Brassard trade was still very good but given his inconsistencies in effort his whole career I understand a little bit more why he was traded.

Inconsistencies? He literally improved his point totals every season in OTT. You guys are so blinded by you bias turning you into history revisionists.

Which season was he "not good enough"?

18-19: 30 goals, 74 points in 82 games
19-20: 41 goals, 75 points in 57 games
20-21: 24 goals, 50 points in 56 games
21-22: 29 goals, 81 points in 81 games
22-23: 39 goals, 91 points in 82 games
23-24: 26 goals, 72 points in 81 games (His only down season)

We all agree that his play is borderline AHL level (if even that) right now but stop making shit up. It is frustrating as hell and derails the discussion.

20-21 when he came off a career year and had what 2 points in like the first 15 games or something? Until last year he always turned it around and his play improved but the fact that every year except one he was either not conditioned enough or going through mental struggles and he was our #1 center is a problem. At some point you knew there would come a season where he would be overcome with his low confidence and won't turn it around. And that happened last year into this year.

Look, I've been there in my own career but I'm not making north of 8 million dollars

So his "not good enough" season you picked is the one where he battled post-covid symptoms and missed camp in 20-21. A season he ended as a PPG player. Ok, got it!

I dont even know how to respond to this. You are just making shit up as you go. You even said in a previous post that he has been inconsistent his whole career which is completely wrong. Is he a streaky player, Yes! But that doesnt make him an inconsistent player. He has literally improved statistically every year since he entered the league culminating with his career year in points 22-23. His only down year was last season.

You once again jumped into a conversation and posted based on how you feel about him right now. The version of Mika we have now is not who he was just 2 season ago. Lets hope he gets back to that previous version.

Does anyone think Mika has another issue that we don’t know about (drugs, gambling, etc)? This has to be the fastest decline I've seen in decades. But what if he does not have passion for the game anymore? He is a person like everyone else. I do miss those Brassard playoff goals. At least he showed up during the important times.
