I guess I have to agree that goals are important in hockey, and a plus player with goal scoring ability is an attractive thing. We can afford both Ryder and Bourque. With Getzlaf and Perry off the market, the two big offensive forwards available are Ryder and Ribeiro. I prefer Ryder in that case, as we are well positioned at Center.

it's a painful thought to have Ryder in there @ 5M$/year... no doubt about it...
but as one-dimensional as he is, his performance in that way has been stellar in this very short sample size... and really, looking back at his career, he's been pretty consistent at delivering close to 30 goals/season (his career goals-per-82games = 26).
With our cap situation, and organizational prospect depth (many prospects looking NHL bound withing 1-3 seasons), we can afford the "premium" of a 5M$ Ryder much better than we could when we last let him leave via UFAgency (when he got 4M$/year).
question remains what $$ he will hold out for. If his prime motivation is to land that (likely last) "BIG" contract, then he may price himself out of town... i could see some team give him 3+ years @ 5M$ or a shorter deal closer to 6M$/per, given the sparse UFA market.
but if he likes the situation he landed in, and is willing to take a bit less total $$ in order to be here for 2-4 years, then I think the situation would make a ~4M$ Ryder over 2-4 years pretty reasonable ...
can't wait to see how it plays out!

If Ryders goes UFA, he can easily got 5-5.5M per year for 3/4 years. The UFA crop this year is really weak. All good players are locked up long term. I think we should make an effort to resign Ryder.
My 2 cents,
I would not re-sign Ryder. It would be off a gut feeling. Not for 4+ anyway. He is getting older and although he is performing at the moment as Eric Cole was last year, I feel he will be half the productive player next year, half of that the following year and useless the next with Habs nation crying over it like babies.
Even though he is a UFA we should just try to trade his rights and move on. The comfort of 4-5 million will put him back to 18 goal seasons which won't sit well with most. If Ryder isn't scoring he pretty much will be doing nothing.
The only hope here is his relationship with Therrien, but how long will he last if we have a crap season or two following this one.
Pass on Ryder
So we lose a guy on pace for 35 goals for the 2nd consecutive season, and replace him with nothing? This is sure going to work out great.![]()
It's never a good idea to lose a guy to UFA (still pi**ed about Gainey) but it happens and MB was well aware of that when he made the trade. Even if Ryder walks we still win that trade because we got to dump Cole's salary. What happens if Ryder becomes the Cole of this season? I'm not saying it's going to happen but no one thought it would happen to Cole this year either. How many years are you willing to be stuck with a guy who is in decline and can't produce to the expectations of his salary.
A 35 goal scorer this year may not be a 35 goal scorer next year (Cole). Let's say Cole was a UFA last summer, do you sign him to a 4 yr deal at his age? For those who argue Ryder is not Cole, blah blah, Cole was loved by all last year and he was projected to be on our #1 line this year.
Keep Ryder.. bye-bye Gionta.
It's for the good of the team.
The only problem I see with Ryder is the dollar amount he'll command for being more one dimensional. It's hard to pay that much money to a guy for a long term who is a specialists. Don't get me wrong, I like what he brings and I'm happy to have him here but not at $5MM.
The play (or lack there of) against Ovy is a perfect example. He could have run right into him but instead let him skate right past him, unharassed and score. I'm not even mad at him for that because that's the type of player you're gonna get. I just don't think he's worth $5MM for that.
At $3.5MM he's a freaking steal but anything north of $4MM and I think you have to start looking elsewhere for a more complete player who may or may not get the goals but he'll get keep some off as well.
In this case, I think Bergevin et al. have earned enough credability that I'll default to what they decide to do. That's why they get paid the big bucks and why I write my opinion on a message board... that just made me a little sad lol.
The problem is, it may be a weak UFA market this summer unless a few guys get bought out(Heatley?). Maybe a guy like Elias? I doubt New Jersey lets him walk. Clarkson, like Ryder is pretty one dimensional, brings toughness but his overall offense is not close to Ryder as he is more dependant on getting fed by high end(Elias Kovlahcuk) guys.
Maybe they can get him at a home town discount 2 years 9 mil?
