Confirmed with Link: Michael Rasmussen signs three year extension

It's a stat that doesn't differentiate. All hits are not created equal. Sure Ras bumps guys against the boards then loses a puck battle, which is technically a hit, but that doesn't make him one of the more physical players on the team.

Valid point. But I also don't trust people to mentally track the quality of his hits when they can't even get the quantity right in the first place.

Completely valid to call the rest of the team even softer. But the FACT is Rasmussen throws more hits (relative to icetime) than anyone not named Fischer.

But again, that would be equivalent to a scenario where Darren Helm took more shots/60 than Pavel Datsyuk and then claiming Helm is the more effective offensive player. The quality of the attribute matters.

He also wins more puck battles and extends scrambles with his reach than most of this board acknowledges. He hasn’t developed into the power forward we want, but some of that is organizational and to me part of it is more weight to bully with. I get the vegan recovery stuff on some of these guys, but a few could use a different diet in my opinion.

In any event there is a reason the room loves him. He does a lot of solid things, his chance at being exceptional was weighing north of 235 and being a net front monster. For whatever reason the Wings seem intent on him in a defensive matchup role. He will probably make a solid living and play a lot of NHL games, just wish that was McLellan’s challenge to him. I have liked him in the PP2 role this year in front of the net.

Trying to compare videos clips of a star fan favourite player vs a bottom 6er is a pretty disingenuous approach. Who the hell is spending their time compiling and uploading videos of Rasmussen?

I'm sorry reality doesn't align to your feelings but the data says, he hits more than anyone else (especially relative to ice time). Its a verifiable fact.

Yes it is MY feelings getting in the way of being objective. You are 100% correct. Rasmussen is an animal. A bottom 6 thug. A man of such intimidation and terror, he provides the Wings what amounts to a PP with every shift as opponents shy away from any area of the ice he occupies.

Case closed.

Fair enough. Sadly, I am not sure Cozens is really the player people think we would be getting, but that is a discussion for a different thread.

Cozens looks checked out in Buffalo. I think there’s more to his game than is being shown there. Same happened for Eichel and for Reinhardt. I would be more surprised if Cozens didn’t return to form when leaving the Sabres.

I still think he’s a better winger than center but 60 point wingers with size and speed have tremendous value. He and Danielson would make for a hell of a second line in the future.

only problem is danielson is probably the ask from buffalo

I very much understand the logic and totally agree he is probably better as a winger. I see him as a bit of a hedge for Danielson in Kasper (if neither was moved). If those two work out, you flex him out to the wing. Personally I think he is somewhere between his current state and the 22-23 season, but not better than the 22-23 season. I wouldn't hate him, but probably don't want to give up what it will take to get him (which will be far more than Ras and picks or whatever).

To be fair I said, "he hits the most" not "he throws the hardest hits."

To be fair, you cited "he hits the most" as proof that he brings the most sandpaper of any player on the team. The counterargument is that ineffective bumping into other players does not equate sandpaper or grit.

A young RHC is certainly an attractive looking player FOR THE RIGHT PRICE. 7.1M is steep, based on historical performance. For the Wings, who have ONE NHL center the question becomes do you give up ND or Kasper for this guy? I believe Wings brass tried to push forward Burger and JV to go along with a #1 pick and some other player. That won't get the deal done.

Would you trade Kasper for Cozens?
As said above, would you trade ND for Cozens?

One of those players has to be part of the deal. I also believe the Wings would push for a contract player to make equal the cap hit. Compher has some sort of NTC, Copp does not.

To me, Ras is in the category of "a player I would miss, but could understand if he has more value as a trade piece right now". I'd really like to see what McLellan can do with him, but if it's time for me to put on my big-boy fan-pants and watch him get traded, I'm OK with it.

Copp and Compher both have 10 team NTCs according to capwages. Of course, one of them might not have Buffalo on their list.

That $7.1m cap hit is steep. I get that Buffalo doesn't want to give the guy away, but there's no way teams are looking at Cozens and don't have reservations about him living up to that. People have been crazy unhappy with paying Compher $5m to be a 40 point guy and that's roughly what Cozens is pacing for again.

Most: Pronoun; the greatest amount or quantity.

If you want to criticize his effectiveness, by all means, but again I don't trust people to mentally track the quality of his hits when they can't even get the quantity right in the first place.

So when presented with data that contradicts your view point you put words in my mouth to misrepresent my argument and create a strawman about him "being a thug" or "animal".

Well played

I've always been a Ras doubter but he's been remarkably noticeable for guy playing 10 minutes a night so far under McLellan

He's also going to get his shifts on the top line at some point too, based on what Todd has expressed in pressers

If you can keep his assignments simple there is something there to work with

I want to see Ras play with a real coach for a bit before we sell. He's incredibly frustrating because he'll dominate for 10 games and then disappear for 30. One game he's a board menace and the next he can't stay on his skates. Todd might be able to simplify the game enough for him to take that next step.

In regards to trading him, I think he has legit NHL value and way more than a lot of Wings fans would think. I'm not opposed to dealing him for a legit top 6 upgrade, and yes I think his value could make him a good piece in that kind of package. I don't think he is viewed by the rest of the NHL as a 4th line scrub like a lot of Wings fans think he is.

Thank you for the detail on the NTC. I only saw Compher on Spotrac (I miss Capfriendly)

Currently absolutely. Kasper has not shown a distinctive offensive upside yet. Banking on players future performance hitting that next level can burn you ie Mantha. We could have traded Mantha for oel or Yandle, but Mantha had high potential that never materialized.

Counterpoint: The Edmonton OIlers would have been much better off banking on Dylan Holloway's future performance than 40-goal man Jeff Skinner
