"72 Seasons" and "If Darkness Had a Son" are my favorites thus far. Nothing mindblowing, but pretty good. Lars Ulrich's drumming — his noisy hi-hat work to be exact — has really started to annoy me though.

Anyway, have to check the new album out; "Inamorata" seems the most interesting song in advance. It's apparently about 11 minutes long (longest 'Tallica song ever) and it has gotten some positive remarks from the people who have heard it.

Heard 72 seasons for the first time just now and I feel like I've heard this song by them already years ago. Sounds very familiar to some of their other recent songs. Reminds me of RHCP where all their recent music sounds the same.

I feel like I've outgrown Metallica. They were one of my top favourites in my teen years.

It does sound similar to Hardwired. Typically their albums sounds very different from one another (aside from Load and Re-Load) so I was expecting something different. Still sounds good though imo.

Yeah, loved them when I was 16. These days I wouldn't rate them in my top 100.

This is tempting, even though half of the bands' singers have shot voices. The price is steep though.

The Metal Hammer review of the new album:
Metallica 72 Seasons review: rarely has James Hetfield laid himself so bare

So, not all that promising, I'm afraid; the lack of dynamics being noted as the biggest problem, i.e. no ballads or even many clean bits or changes in tempo (chugga chugga chugga all the way through?). On the plus side, "Inamorata" is once again mentioned as a highlight and "You Must Burn!" also gets another compliment.

My biggest expectations already went out the window a bit when it was revealed that the album is 77+ minutes long; all of their post-TBA records have a good number of padding on them, and I figure that this one will be no exception.

However, I hope there will be at least a couple modern Metallica classics — like "Halo on Fire" and "Spit Out the Bone" for me were on the previous album — and a few other cracking tunes...

I mean the reviewed calls it a decent if not unspectacular album with a 3.5/5 so not a terrible rating. From your post at first I thought this was going to be like a 2/5 or something.

Ok, sorry about that :D

BTW, a slightly more enthusiastic review from Rolling Stone:
Metallica Deliver Some of the Deepest, Hardest-Hitting Music of Their Career on '72 Seasons'

Not that the reviews should affect anyone's own opinion in any case; however, based on the information one gets, I'm slightly disappointed that there is no ballad, instrumental, clean/acoustic parts (not much at least)...

Anyway, according to the reviews so far, James Hetfield and his singing and lyrics really seem to be the biggest strengths of the album. Now, I'm not a big lyrics guy, but still hoping for some music that really moves me; I've said it about a hundred times now, but "Inamorata" seems to be 'the one'.

This is what I have seen also. Good on him to come back after his vocal chords were damaged to the point some doctor said he might never sing again. He had surgery and relearned to sing which is of course why he suddenly sounded so different from their earlier work.

Metal Hammer gave St Anger 9 out of 10 back in the day.

Classic Rock was more on the ball and gave it a 2 out of 5 and said it was a difficult listen.

Metallica is an interesting band.

I was hooked the first time I heard Ride The Lightning when it came out. I didn't think they could raise the bar, but they did with Master of Puppets, and again with And Justice For All.

The the Black album came out. James sounded incredible on the album. The production was top notch. The songwriting was tight, catchy, and succinct. But it just didn't resonate with me. I thought maybe the next album would be a return to form, and listened to Load a few times but it was clear that the old Metallica was gone. And that's ok - people change, people grow.

Didn't really pay attention to them for decades until I heard Spit Out The Bone. That sounded raw and powerful. Really liked it. Not so much the rest of Hardwired... too safe and too much filler for me.

So when I heard Lux Aeterna, I thought maybe, just maybe, this time will be different. Banger of a song! But alas, it is not. The other three releases do nothing for me. They are so repetitive with zero dynamic interest.

Love James, love what Metallica has meant to me in my youth, love that they've influenced and paved the way for some of my favourite bands. Truly a benchmark band.

2/5 or 4/10 is about what St Anger is worth overall. A few songs that I think are ok but overall it's probably the Metallica album I listen to the least...well after the abomination that is Lulu, been a while since I tried listening to that one and last time I did still did not like it.

I agree with this take. From what I have listened to, 72 Seasons feels/seems derivative.

The $5.98 EP - Garage days re-revisited (or for you kiddies, CD 2 of Garage inc.) is my favorite Metallica Album. Which is odd because it's all covers... But, imho, it is their best 'sounding' album and the energy is off the charts, which is the most important ingredient.

Kill 'Em All is definitely my fave. It just rocks so fast. Great rhythm guitar, vocals, and solos.
