Two nights ago, in a Division 17 game. (Out of 20), a player that received a 2 minute minor for interference yelled at me "Call it both ways you Pejorative Slur." not that it matters but for context the penalties call were 3 minors each in the game.
No way a hockey player can pronounce "pejorative" much less know what it means.

More often than not "questionable" icings are often waived off in our league. It's an ongoing joke with our refs regarding a 3 icings max per period unwritten rule.

Also this past Wednesday night in our game, I got held late in the 3rd period as I took the puck into their zone along the left side and was cutting to my right, across the high slot. It was a blatant hold, I lost my momentum and the puck, and I could see a few guys on our bench with their arms in the air with a WTF was that?!? At the next whistle I politely asked the ref why a call wasn't made and his rationale was; well, its a 1-0 game (we were winning), it really didnt take you out of the play, and you didnt fall down, even though he held you, and due to the game circumstances I didnt want to put them down on a call that could have gone either way. So I next time I guess I'll have to make sure to fall when I get held. #shrug

Yes also on the limited icing calls. I’m going to borrow the 3 icing limit joke. Our refs Seem to mostly call icing only when someone is actually putting the effort to beat it down there and leg it out. If the d man is just skating back at a normal pace they will let us play to avoid stopping the game.

My local rink is a smaller 1 sheet arena. The larger chiller rinks in Columbus don’t run curfew clocks and will let games run super long. I think I actually prefer the certainty of when the games are ending. Playoffs we don’t use the rink clock though

Not recent at all, but I remember a playoff game where a guy was running around and throwing the body a bit too much. My team was getting chirpy on the bench at him.

So I was collecting the puck in the corner and heading to the net when I saw him coming...gave him a HUGE reverse hit and down he goes. Ref called a 2 but I was laughing so hard at the guy, I got a 10 n game after.

My bench gave me the stick salutes. What goes around comes around 😅

WE had a great game down by one going into the third. The other line of young kids gets lazy and lets 3 goals in on our goal off rebounds in one shift scored by the third guy in. The center doesn't cover the guy coming in from the high slot. They didn't come off after the first or second goal , so naturally they let up a third. The game was tighter than the 6-2 scoreboard until that shift. Fast forward to the last 5 minutes of the game and we have a powerplay, and I am in the low slot area scoring area about five feet from the goalie crossing to the other side. A guy on the other team comes over and just starts cross checking me multiple times in the back for no reason, and i turn around and level him with a check. He starts crying to the ref and the ref calls both of us. He is still yelling at the ref so he gets an extra two. The ref comes to me and said I didn't call the first one because I wanted to see if you were going to take care of it or me. When you hit him I had to call both. I just laughed and said I understand. He said I gave him an extra two for being unsportsmanlike for talking back to the ref. The ref joked with me after the game and said I figured you could teach him a better lesson than me giving him two minute. We scored on the powerplay and lost 6-3.

As always -- decide how you want to play. If you want to avoid contact, cool, it's beer league and we all have to work in the morning. If you want to be all about scrumming around, cool, it's hockey and they call them "dirty areas" for a reason.

But you can't have it both ways. Don't go around laying the body on people, then scream bloody murder if someone grazes your jersey.

We play in a small men's league with only 6 teams, so everyone knows each other pretty well. I wasn't at the game, but was told by a few members of one team that a player on the opposing team went into cardiac arrest on the bench. Thankfully, one of the players was a first responder and another is a physician. They used the defibrillator, and performed CPR on him. Got a pulse back and waited until the ambulance transported him to the hospital. As of this morning he was in serious but stable condition. Saw a Live Barn clip of it and it was chilling. I know him and he's a good guy. His daughters were watching him play too :(

Man oh man - one of the worst games I was ever involved in tonight.

We're a lower tiered team. The other team brought in some subs way too talented for the tier we're in. Score rapidly got out of hand - and yet they kept pushing.

This team was extremely chippy also, despite having a huge lead.

But this is where I also lost my head - my guys kept biting on the chippiness. We kept taking retaliation penalties. To the point where the refs called the game decided we had forfeited despite 8 minutes to play.

This is not me complaining about the refs - they did the best they could in a bad situation. I blame the other team, but also my own team.

It was one of those "why I am doing this to myself on a Saturday night" kind of moments.

After a poor start to the year, we had to climb back in the standings. We set a goal to get to 8th place so we did the Kingston Ontario Megabowl to get to 8th place. (Took a page out of Semi-Pro)

Boys are in playoffs now but we had to play in a play-in series to get there. Here's the full series

This past weekend I reffed in the Ben Stelter Memorial Tournament supporting the fund created by the family of 4 year old brain cancer victim Ben Stelter of Edmonton. Was nice that Edmonton Oilers Evander Kane stopped by to support the event.

Game between partner jails Quinte and Central East at the International Police Hockey Tournament. Was an absolute blast to play because it was a beer league game with hits (no hitting tournament, refs didn’t care)

I had a pretty good game tonight but didn’t score. Last week I scored but was less pleased with my play.

Funny the way it is.

I’m currently fighting my way through a “hurt” upper thigh lower hip situation. It’s taken some strength from my right leg and I’m not confident putting torque on it doing crossovers or cutting and pushing off it. so I’m playing differently in my head. I just keep playing because sitting at home and not playing would suck

As a veteran of a two ACL reconstruction surgeries and a few other injuries playing hockey, there's a third option. You should obtain a referral from your doctor or go directly to a physical therapist (whatever your insurance requires) who will diagnosis the injury and develop an exercise/treatment plan to achieve a healthy recovery. It typically only takes a few weeks and can help overcome the muscle imbalances, lack of flexibility, etc... that contributed to the original injury.

I think of it this way... How much money do you invest in sticks and equipment to play well in beer league hockey? Physical therapy is a similar investment in your ability to play your best, and perform day to day activities with minimal pain/discomfort.

You are totally correct. I should have made the time and seen someone, anyone about it. I’m sure a physical therapist could have massaged and stretched my muscle issue out weeks ago.

One of the on ice programs I was participating in ended. So that cut me down to once a week on ice. The next day after the first missed session I woke up knowing I felt physically better but mentally dumber.

Played in a Correctional officer charity game for the Salvation Army food bank between the provincial jail I work at and officers from a federal prison. If you’re from the States, it’s the equivalent of your county jail against a state/federal prison.

Nice!

Mrs Joe used to work at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre (I come by my username honestly), so I can just imagine how testy that game must have been...

Great to hear about fellow officers. The game was actually competitive. A lot of us know each other and worked with each other so it was a competitive Shinny game. If you got on our channel, watch the game that has CECC vs Quinte, that was a testy one because we are partner jails in the ministry

Decided to come out of self imposed sabbatical to play summer. In a lower division I tend to feel pressure to perform to help the team. This summer I am playing up a few divisions so now I am going to likely be a contributor not a driver. Should be an interesting experience. First game tonight.

Anyone ever get in a fight in beer league? Almost did the other night.

We’re waxing this team like 5-0, they can’t touch the puck for long stretches.

Doosh bag I guess was frustrated about how the game was going and cross checks me into my goalie when I’m not looking or paying attention behind the play, extremely dirty play esp for mens league.

Take a license plate and don’t say or do anything right away. Later in shift I’m on the prowl, catch with with head down after catching a pass and blow him up.

He comes at me, we tangle and take him down to the ground. His teammates say ‘drop em’ ‘let them go’ I asked him if he wanted it and to make a move, we go to drop but refs get in between break it up.

Adrenaline was definitely pumping, im not a tough guy or hothead but I don’t take shit like that from people.

I was a little taller than the guy but he was a little chubby and big boned and prob had 30 pounds on me.

Both got a double minor for roughing…if I see him and that team again it’ll be playoffs..
