That was messed up. They were a pretty good band too. I saw them on that tour and they were falling apart. The guitar player left the band the day I saw them. I still listen to songs from that record.

I’m sure the Stones needed the money….

IIRC, it was a Nike commercial that "let the cat out of the bag". The Stones didn't know (or care) about Bittersweet Symphony until that commercial

Looking it up, looks like it was the Stones manager who was the mastermind behind it. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the manager's son reverted the rights back to the Verve guy ten years after the manager's death.
