The more I think about it if you define punk as doing whatever the hell you want and not giving a single solitary shit what anyone thinks Metallica suing their own fans was actually a million times more punk than any punk band you can think of.

That is... not really how punk works. "Doing whatever the hell you want" could describe a whole bunch of people who are diametrically opposite to the punk ethos, which is built largely on anti-corporatism and anti-consumerism.

Metallica suing their fans was just the ultimate sellout move, it doesn't go deeper than that.

Don't know about that... we used to have a metal band in Finland, called Amoral. Not at all known outside the circles, but with street creed within them.

Then they went and took the runner-up winner in the Finnish version of American Idol as their singer, this pre-teen looking boy aspiring to be "a metal singer".

"Hello, I'm Ari, your new heavy idol!"

The thing is, anyone can have saw blades and raw meat and fake blood and "challenge the establishment", and it's like meh. But to turn the full front assault on your own supposed audience and go against their established values... that, my friend, is true act of rebellion.

I'm sorry, the idea of "rebellion" by going against non-conformist values is like something Spinal Tap would come up with. One does not become a bigger rebel by embracing the establishment. It makes no sense.

Metallica buddied up with the government and assembled a phalanx of Hollywood lawyers to go after their own fanbase out of pure avarice. The sheer insanity of that actually happening in real life is up there with Bob Dylan shilling Chryslers on a Super Bowl ad, or Elvis Presley becoming a narc. There's selling out, and then there's selling out to the point of making a full heel turn. Metallica's was a Darth Vader level heel turn.

Sadly the 1990 miniseries required a stand in for Pennywise. He was killed three years after his biography was released in a sewer explosion in the suburbs of Chicago in 1989. He has spent three years exploring other cities and got lost in drugs and alcohol after his quick rising success.

Luckily for movie makers, his son was born and was able to fill the role in 2017 to honor his father.

So Metallica is just like GG Allin, is what you're saying.
