4 guys standing around waiting for someone to pass them the puck. That's how everyone does 5-on-3s right?

Pittsburgh: Crosby, Malkin

Chicago: Toews, Kane

The above is why the Penguins and Blackhawks won the Cup, not because they finished 9th several years in a row while trying really hard and creating a winning culture. The last two times we've had a top 5 pick we drafted two guys that are now NHL captains. Do you think we'll create a winning culture by missing out on the playoffs and drafting crappy players? Or drafting another captain that will bring a winning culture while also, you know, knowing how to play hockey?

Making the playoffs is the roadblock, because anything can happen once it's cleared. There has been enough talent every year to have made it. You're talking about Captains yet during those seasons the high-talent who's now captain of this team just decided not to use it for the first couple months as a yearly routine after 09. They missed twice on the last game of the season by losing, and they're choking this one away as well by losing to teams weak and strong.

Talk of tanking when a teams still controls their own destiny to make the playoffs is ridiculous

Not what I'm addressing. I agree, I think until you're mathematically eliminated the goal is the playoffs, common ground there brother. But to actually suggest that ending the season with a loss to put us in 9th place is an overall better outcome for the future than ending with a top 5 pick, because "hey at least they were close"? That roadblock works both ways.
