Steigy has been gone for awhile now.

I listen to other commentators do the same thing though. That's why I can't figure out why anyone is that anyone does it. Colorado, Seattle, and Vegas guys do the same. Being a frequent watcher of all four, I see little difference. That said, I hate Seattle's guy and apparently he's #1 so...what do I know apparently.

Well, it's technically the network that let him go so maybe there is still a spot for him within the org - that's on Dubas. Same thing happened to Steiggy when they replaced him with Mears.

Hell, while they're at it, they should link Steiggy and Errey back up in some capacity. I'd hate to see Errey go and do color commentary somewhere else, it just wouldn't be right.

Mears never did much for me but he didn't grate on my nerves. When it was Steigy, I usually watched the opponent's broadcast on center ice.

Errey was a goofball but a knowledgeable goofball.

edit: "Metallurgy save" points to Doug McCleod, who according to this wikipedia page was calling games in mid-90s. Christ, has it really been that long? But the more I think about it, elevating Getzoff makes sense. He's had a really close relationship with Mike Lange, who he replaced in the radio booth with Lange's encouragement and blessing.

FSG has Dave O'Brien and Joe Castiglione as the lead play-by-play guys for the Red Sox. They've been doing it for decades at a high level. O'Brien used to call games for ESPN and Sean McDonough, ESPN's primary hockey play-by-play broadcaster, is a fill-in broadcaster for the Red Sox when Castiglione is off.

FSG also has Jack Edwards call Bruins games for NESN. I don't like Edwards, but he's been doing this a long time and he has name recognition in Boston, just like O'Brien and Castiglione do.

With no Lange available, why not go to the guy who Lange mentored? I think Mears is well-liked as a person, but Getzoff seems to have more of an "it factor."

Well, various different ownership groups and media rights holders since the first Cups have.

It's a really good model though: get a PBP guy with local color, who's knowledgable about the game, and then lightly supplement them with a color guy too who knows a bit and adds interesting tidbits but stays out of the way.

The Pens have been doing this weird thing for a while where the color guys are just overpowering, the PBP guys are weirdly bland or forgettable. Like, you don't want the new Bob Grove or whoever to be the most memorable part of the broadcast.

That's why like him or not, Errey was pretty much what you wanted in a color guy and Bourque was not. Everyone might agree with Bourque's shitting on the team, but nobody is going to make a compilation of funny or memorable Bourque moments. People agree with Bourque, because he's a pessimist, but nobody has been defending him on the broadcast because he's good at his job.
