Davo is the f***ing man. This fanbase is truly blessed to likely see his and Draisaitl's entire career here.
does anyone have a clue why McDavid‘s play is clearly a notch below the last two regular seasons?
I mean he is still great but usually he was a lock to win the art ross and now again there are a couple of guys with higher scoring rates.
Also his goals per season dropp off is remarkable.
Is this concerning or not?
Last year he played virtually the whole year with what was probably a significant core injury. I think that hurt his goal totals.
The issue is more that others are scoring at a very high pace. McDavid's 82 game pace right now is 127 points. His goals pace over 82 games is 42. And that is with a very slow start. Since Nov 1 he has put up 1.84 pts/g and .63g/gm. Given that McDavid traditionally has been better in the second half I am not concerned!
McDavid legacy in Edmonton imo is based more on if he does sign to remain an Oiler even more so than if he wins a cup. He wants to be "considered" the best player ever he obviously needs to continue/improve his play but just by signing in Edmonton he would cement his legacy and give himself a legitimate shot for the rest of his career to win and rewrite the history books.
Aka, if McDavid resigns here... McDavid >>> Gretzky. Nuff said. You can get technical and adjust for time periods... but if he signs here he really does take top spot likely literally and absolutely figuratively.
This segways into Fouriers great point. The league has made it easier to score again. Not 1970/80s easy but easier. I need to watch Mckinnon more, my viewings sporadic the last 2 years but... No one seriously thinks Mckinnon is better than McDavid. Points are points but McDavid is a step better talent imo. I see Kutch more than Mckinnon and can say the same for him. Both superstars that dominate the game and can absolutely outscore McDavid but not as talented overall and this is noted by players fans etc... McDavids Conn Smyth (I wouldn't have given him) was truly deserved. What he did was amazing last year and that, plus many other things, has him currently and projecting forward as the best player in his generation at least and arguably goat.
Consistently in this league is tough. Look at Matthew's so far this year as example. Or Pasta. Both when they struggle to score at an elite level just... "look" terrible imo. McDavid, when playing "poorly" for him still looks like "just" a superstar who still puts up 1.2 ppg at worst.
One thing I want too see is McDavid to put it all together one year, preferably playoffs. Last year if he scores 1 more goal it's likely a cup. 2 obviously in the last game actually a cup. His elite playmaking from last year plus his elite goal scoring from 2 years back plus his very inconsistent 2 way game that sometimes looks next level, other times not so much.
A generational superstar widely considered the best player in the world that still "could" take even another step... Sick.
One final point that I have to point out... So many people say Draisaitl is a product of McDavid but as an even bigger Draisaitl fan over McDavid I can't believe anyone doesn't think... Draisaitl, for example right now and often in previous playoff runs, makes McDavid look downright pedestrian. Unreal to say but absolutely true. Point in case Draisaitl recent run.
Oilers fans are so blessed. I firmly believe they have the 2 best players on the planet. That changes even game by game between the 2. Neither relies on the other. Their playstyle is so different and both can carry a team on their back. So incredibly rare to see two such individuals on one team. I hope they manage to resign McDavid up for a historic dbl superstar full career tenure in Edmonton.
Edit: I have to think Draisaitl having the ability to carry a team reduces the stress McDavid puts on himself considerably. McDavid is driven to the point where he looks like he is going to "pop". Imagine if he went to a team without that support. Guy might have an aneurism.
