He hasn't been right for 2 years. But other than this place, nobody will mention it basically.

He's on pace for 58 points this year. And has lost skill and speed.
lol buddy is 4 months off winning the conn smythe.

Something is definitely up with him this year, and I don't just mean coming back from an injury surprisingly (and perhaps alarmingly) early. Please, just rest him until he's actually healthy, not "Oilers healthy".
The doctors and him make the decision. What does “Oilers healthy” even mean.

He's still Connor McDavid but I fully agree he hasn't looked himself for a season plus. Zero doubt he's been the best player in the league for most of his career but the last season plus a few guys have entered his tier

I don't know how people that watch him game after game don't see it. Still wouldn't surprise me to see him pull out of it but I believe he has some nagging injury. I thought he looked a little more like himself last game

I've said it all year, really think something is going on either physically or mentally. Okay, let's blame his wife!

Conn Smythe as a skater on the losing team. Basically a legendary performance unmatched in 30+ years. Guy had the whole Florida team draped on him with his 2 wingers being useless in the finals and still almost powered through, with his own core injury.

I wouldn't blame him if the burn of last playoffs is still bugging him. Don't doubt he will be back in full form soon enough.

I agree with this but its also hilarious how he still won a Conn Smythe while not looking 100%

22/23 McDavid is the best version of him so far. He's so much more dangerous when his objective is scoring goals

Right now I'd say that the odds favour McDavid finishing his career with the second highest point totals of all time. Barring injury after this year he will probably need roughly 810-820 points to catch Jagr. He could possibly do that by the time he is 35.
It's wild looking at the all-time points leaders. McDavid at 999 points is approaching the career totals of some HOF players in their own right, who got 1000 points in 1100-1300 games. Then you look at McDavid's games played and see "658". It's another level.

You gotta hate lock outs. McDavid would have passed 1000 points. Crosby with the most points as a Pens. OV with the goal record

I think what happened to Connor and the PP, in general, was that it was WAY too scouted. They opponents pre-scouted the lanes he took and started taking them away.

It wouldn't surprise me if Connor decided to keep a bunch of "plays" for the playoffs. Scotty Bowman often did that.

And that's where you simplify and start firing at the net, creating chaos. But these guys had so much success before, they think they can just continue to go for the pretty plays. Really stubborn.

Possibly

But typically a player's prime is over at at age 29. They can still be amazingly productive for their age an have some amazing seasons flanked by some good seasons.

8 more seasons of 100+ points is highly unlikely. Speed is usually the first thing to go as players decline. Not drastically, but over time. IQ stays forever, but people need to have a sober understanding of their body limitations and accept that they need to adjust and can't do what they did at age 26 anymore.

Joe Thornton possibly would be top 5 in assists all time.

He sits at 7th with 1109 assists, but played primarily in a low scoring era and missed a full 82 game season at age 25 and half a season at age 33. He managed to be 5th overall in scoring at age 36 lol
He averaged 49-96 assists a season over his prime

2nd place is 1249 assists
3rd place has 1193 assists
4th place has 1169 assists

Crosby's last three seasons have been 84 in 69, 93 in 82 and 94 in 82 at the ages of 34, 35 and 36 respectively. It's certainly not guaranteed and health matters but McDavid could still conceivably put up 3 120+ point seasons at age 28 through 30 which would mean that he would need only average about 85-90 points per year over the other 5 years.

Absolutely. It's how his wheels hold up in his later years that will decide things

Crosby was a speedster in his younger years and morphed more into a superstar grinder. Probably best edgework and puck protection abilities of all time

There often is a drop-off in late 20s/early 30s, but keep in mind that Kucherov at 30 and Panarin at 32 both had insane career years last year.

And maybe McDavid’s “drop off” in his 30s will be from 140 points to “only” 110-120. We typically still see the top tier players at point per game + all the way to age 37,38,39 like Gretz, Crosby, Ovechkin, Sakic etc.
