McDavid with a horrendous back-check

Yeah it’s McDavids fault Barrie shot the puck into the opponents shin pads and couldn’t keep up with his man as the Knights went down the ice.

McDavid was never the guy who was going to catch anyone defensively there. Anyone who blames that on him has a clear agenda against him.

Just like the Ovi controller disconnected GIF.

Shitty camera angle and complete misrepresentation of McDavid’s role in that situation.

Should he have skated back a little faster? Maybe. But the D at the point couldn’t even catch up to the Vegas forwards, how would McDavid catch them when the puck is basically turned over at the blue line and he’s at the right wing circle?

The OP does confuse me. McDavid doesn't backcheck yet he is still the best player in the world. Shame on the rest of the players. Maybe McDavid should be more accurately categorized as the best offensive player in the world. Even that is debatable. Edmonton ruining yet another career.

I think the issue is effort.

This is Marner as a rookie, and he’s slow compared to Connor.

People are essentially saying (excuse the NFL reference here) that unless McDavid is like DK Metcalf Chasing down Budda Baker on that interception last year to prevent a TD, he's a liability defensively, a coaster, and only plays for points.

Maybe pick more than one play in his career (not to mention one that might actually be his fault or even influencable) before making him out to be some one dimmensional pariah

I know it's a joke post but to me it looks like McDavid actually gives up when Karlsson gets too far ahead.

Not sure if I was joking.

I think McDavid is on average the fastest player(in mind, body, with the puck etc combined) currently out there but Karlsson is certainly not sloth himself and I have seen him get ridiculous speed in breakaways etc(arguably as fast as anyone, including McDavid, in such situations), perhaps he just got a slight headstart and McDavid realized he couldn't make it up, no reason to not skate back and help in case of a rebound etc mind you.

McDavid is one of those players that really tilts the ice, and by that I mean, he flies to the offensive zone but struggles like hes going back uphill to the defensive zone.

So basically a bunch of Twitter guys who don’t understand hockey, are looking for reasons to shit on McDavid?

Barrie is the one who got out skated - McDavid hung back high to pick up the late man if a PKer was ballsy enough to jump up there.

Really dumb ass break down and lack of basic understanding of the game by whomever tweeted this.

No, I think people are just saying that McDavid isn't very good defensively. A lot of stars aren't. I don't even think it matters all that much in the big scheme of things other than the fact the Oilers as a whole are so bad on that side of the puck.

Exactly, anyone seeing it differently lacks hockey knowledge. There are two guys ahead of him, McDavid would be selling out and leaving the opportunity for a 3rd PKer to sneak into the slot if he pointlessly races back to cover a guy who already has a guy on him.

These dudes know when they’re beat. He could do nothing there, and would be taking himself outta position had he skated hard. The only way he woulda looked bad is if he stopped skating and a 3rd guy cut in front of him, but that didn’t happen. As is he’s best served hanging back waiting for that guy and serving as an outlet should a save/stop be made.

I have never understood the endless obsessive desire of SO MANY fans -- and executives -- to find fault with exciting offensive stars. The bizarre retrograde hatred of skill is a singular obsession in hockey, and is the strangest thing about the sport compared to other major leagues.

This play last night sums up why alot of people think Mcdavid plays the game for points rather than team wins. He coasts on a back-check while on the powerplay hoping for the play to go the other way and counter-attack. Instead Vegas scores a short. Mcdavid doesnt even take a stride past centre ice. He is supposed to be the leader of this team, his teammates will follow his lead. I wonder if Tippet has the guts to call him out in front of the team during video session.

Mcdavid is the best player on planet earth, you wont get an argument from me on that, but does he care more about individual stats or team wins? Down 1-0 in a massive divisional game while the Oilers are out of a playoff spot. Just unacceptable.

That was the most mentally deficient analysis and conclusion ever based on a single play that McDavid had no chance of being in.

If McDavid stopped skating and failed to tag up with the late man, and dude banged in a rebound, then ya no doubt you could shit on him in that case.

This breakdown by the Twitter people is so bizarre that I honestly hope they are some casual fans who don’t really understand the game.

If not, they are being disingenuous as hell and have some agenda agt McDavid.

Because of the importance and the amount of defensive played I would imagine that the NBA would be the same, the finding fault to Lebron James was a national pastime (at least for a while) and I imagine the same for Harden and others after.

In baseball or football, either you play on offence or defence in one case or in case of baseball you can play a position where your offence is clearly more valuable than the gap between you and the best at defence, if you do not play designated hitter and maybe a bit more factual and less debatable about it has well.

McDavids job there is to cover any trailers, if he gets over aggressive and commits to the players RNH and Barrie are already trying to catch then it could leave the trailer wide open. If he was within reach of Karlsson then yeah you could burn him for no effort but he was miles away, he was Barrie’s guy. Barrie is the one entirely at fault for the whole sequence, not McDavid.

McDavid checked out about 15 games ago...this is not news.

Slightly off topic but why did they go back to Smith. They were sort of rolling then they play Smith back to back and he gives two stinkers.

One might think McDavid's lack of effort here and his recent struggles mean he might just want to move on from the Oilers.

But that was about the usual amount of effort McDavid puts into playing defense on any given night.

Every player does stuff that doesnt look good on a shift. Posting one bad play or 10 for that matter is just nonsense. I can go and find 10 plays just as bad for every player in the league.
