His haters can say what they want but Ovie has a cup, the most important stat in this conversation, and McDavid doesn't. And if Edmonton doesn't get it together then it looks like that's not going to change this season?OV has a cup and his best linemates throughout his career are a combo of Backstrom, Semin and Kuznetsov.
McDavid has been playing with Draisaitl for 10 years as the best 1-2 tandem in the league and still hasnt won.
Yup. And OV had shittier linemates too.His haters can say what they want but Ovie has a cup, the most important stat in this conversation, and McDavid doesn't. And if Edmonton doesn't get it together then it looks like that's not going to change this season?
McDavid with Draisaitl being such a dominant force with zero cups in 10 years might be a first. How often in NHL history (at least in recent times instead of trying to analyze what happened 80 years ago kind of thing) has there been a team with the best duo (or one of the best) for a decade and still didnt win? Cant be that many.
Canadians rule, Russians inv...ite criticism of their PO performancesMcDavid recorded his 148th point in his 92nd game. Ovechkin so far has 147 points in 161 games.
Impressive for McDavid to keep climbing up the all time ladder at a lightning pace.
AgreedHonestly tells me more about Oveckhin’s embarrassing playoffs career as a high-rated offensive winger. Even guys like Marchand are ahead of him despite him not being a star before he was 30. Ovi is a regular season paper tiger
I mean, Ovechkin's "drop off" in the playoff is normal for 99% of players. I could call him easy to shut down in the playoffs, just not dominate like few can be.Ovechkin always had the kind of offense that was easy to shutdown in playoffs. Also was often shutdowned in international bo1s too.
According to Daver, Crosby had a grace period until 2021, so McDavid has two more years. Both things are true: McD is better player than OV (higher tier) and McD benefits greatly from McDrai phenomenon.
Hopefully he wins a Cup, he is the most deserving current player.
(This is the only reason I root for EDM)
Also McD decline as a goal scorer is obvious now with big sample size in both regular season and playoffs.
Last 2 years of regular season he is 33-goals scorer (average over 82 games).
Last 2 years of playoffs (harder to score) he is 26-goals scorer.
Two year "grace period" is almost over, no trophies at the peak suck (Conn Smythe w/o Cup feels odd). Cup will reset it.
I think this Florida team probably beats 2009 Pittsburgh but I'd put 2016 Pittsburgh up against anyone. That team had three first lines with Kessel playing on the third line, and a very competent fourth line. Along with Letang at his absolute peak, and Matt Murray a brick wall at .923 sv%. Dominated every team nearly every game, even in the ones they lost.Lol. The 06 Oilers smashed through literally the same Red Wings team like a rented mule because they were physical. You think the Panthers wouldn't be able to ? The difference between those teams and this Florida team is that the Panthers are much more physical in your face, hitting, grinding non stop, with a much better goalie and deeper team. Younger, faster. A 21 year old Crosby isnt doing shit against them. The Caps literally never made it out of the 2nd round in OVs entire career then found lightning in a bottle 1 year. Had they met this Panthers team.. it would have been lights out.
And by that logic the one cup pales in comparison to GretzkyHis haters can say what they want but Ovie has a cup, the most important stat in this conversation, and McDavid doesn't. And if Edmonton doesn't get it together then it looks like that's not going to change this season?
i have to defend Ovi here, it is Mcdavids numbers that are exceptionally high
not bad numbers by Ovi, he is at 67th place PPG, higher than
celbrated guys like Marchand( who everybody adores his PO) Thackuk
Marner Nylander etc and Kopitar whos endless praises never stops
I see the stat for McD as a nod to how good he is more than a dig at Ovi (which the usual suspects have subsequently tried to make it). Incredible playoff run he is on.
OV has the most reg season goals. This thread is about playoff points, but let's look at playoff goals and total goalsAre people putting Ovechkin down now? The player with the most goals in NHL history?
Because Canadian hockey fans need something to latch onto. And McDavid getting more pts than OV is something they can claim winner, since they cant claim the same being a cup winner.Ovechkin hasn't had 100 points in a season in like 15 years. He is a great player but not even close to McDavid offensively. Why would anyone expect McDavid and Ovechkin to score at similar rates in the playoffs? Might as well compare Ovechkin to Mario Lemieux.
Ovi and McDavid are similar tier players. However, McDavid needs a cup to surpass Ovechkin on the all time greatest players list imo.
Dude the thread was literally created when McDavid actually passed Ovechkin in playoff points, don't be so insecure about attaching agendas.Because Canadian hockey fans need something to latch onto. And McDavid getting more pts than OV is something they can claim winner, since they cant claim the same being a cup winner.
Another case of Canada vs Russia. Similar to Crosby vs OV. But you dont hear about Crosby comparisons anymore since OV won a cup in 2018 and Pitt cant even make the playoffs anymore or lose in round one. So the media and fans now move to McDavid who has taken the reigns as Canada's best player.
If OV was Canadian, nobody would care about doing comparisons, but for Canadian fans and sports channels, they need something to hug when they go to bed. In an alternate universe, OV being Canadian would be the best move ever because then they can claim the #1 and #2 goal scorers at about 900 each are both Canadian.
McDavid and OV are totally different players too, which makes it an odd comparison right from the start. One is a pure sniper who is more durable and bodychecks, the other one scores a bit less goals, but gets way more assists. One player of these players has a cup despite playing with crappier linemates, while the other cant win despite having an awesome teammate which many fans would classify as the second or third best player in the league. And they still lose.
Just to show how stupid the comparison can get, then Jim Paek is better than either player since he won two cups on Pittsburgh. And he's Korean. Korea > Canada and Russia.
Part of that is Lemieux played 41 of his 107 playoff games post age 30. Between bad early management and then injuries/retirement, he didn't play all that much in the playoffs in his career.Exactly.
Though Ovechkin does hold the dubious distinction of making it past the second round just once, his name carries significant weight overall.
It’s mind bending that McDavid has piled up points at about a 100% quicker rate than a legend like Ovechkin, something that can only be minimally explained by different scoring eras.
Frankly, the minimal difference in playoff production between McDavid and someone like Mario Lemieux is perhaps even more crazy, though Mario easily clears both at scoring goals in the playoffs.
If he wins the cup at some point....absolutely.Why would he need a SC to surpass Ovechkin if he was the better player?
I'm not sayin that McDavid ahs already passed him as career matters but he most certainly will right?
And if he doesn't your take would be absurd right? If he wins the cup at some point....absolutely.
