How often in NHL history (at least in recent times instead of trying to analyze what happened 80 years ago kind of thing) has there been a team with the best duo (or one of the best) for a decade and still didnt win? Cant be that many.

It's sort've insane how people just glossly overlook the fact that Washington has only been to 1 lone conference finals in the Ovi era. That shit is disgusting for a player of his caliber.

Peak Ovi was a reliable playoff performer but post-2010 Ovi is a player you wouldn't want in the playoffs no matter how impactful his goalscoring is IMO.

Last 2 years of playoffs (harder to score) he is 26-goals scorer.

Two year "grace period" is almost over, no trophies at the peak suck (Conn Smythe w/o Cup feels odd). Cup will reset it.

I mean, Ovechkin's "drop off" in the playoff is normal for 99% of players. I could call him easy to shut down in the playoffs, just not dominate like few can be.

According to Daver, Crosby had a grace period until 2021, so McDavid has two more years.

Lol. The 06 Oilers smashed through literally the same Red Wings team like a rented mule because they were physical. You think the Panthers wouldn't be able to ? The difference between those teams and this Florida team is that the Panthers are much more physical in your face, hitting, grinding non stop, with a much better goalie and deeper team. Younger, faster. A 21 year old Crosby isnt doing shit against them. The Caps literally never made it out of the 2nd round in OVs entire career then found lightning in a bottle 1 year. Had they met this Panthers team.. it would have been lights out.

I think this Florida team probably beats 2009 Pittsburgh but I'd put 2016 Pittsburgh up against anyone. That team had three first lines with Kessel playing on the third line, and a very competent fourth line. Along with Letang at his absolute peak, and Matt Murray a brick wall at .923 sv%. Dominated every team nearly every game, even in the ones they lost.

Though Ovechkin does hold the dubious distinction of making it past the second round just once, his name carries significant weight overall.

It’s mind bending that McDavid has piled up points at about a 100% quicker rate than a legend like Ovechkin, something that can only be minimally explained by different scoring eras.

Frankly, the minimal difference in playoff production between McDavid and someone like Mario Lemieux is perhaps even more crazy, though Mario easily clears both at scoring goals in the playoffs.

OV has the most reg season goals. This thread is about playoff points, but let's look at playoff goals and total goals

Playoff goals all time:

• #1 Wayner - 122 G in 208 GP
• #12 OV - 77 G in 161 GP
• #61 Draisaitl - 51 G in 93 GP
• #92 McDavid - 43 G in 93 GP

Total Goals (Season + Playoffs) all time:

• #1 Wayner - 1016 G in 1695 GP

And they still lose.

Just to show how stupid the comparison can get, then Jim Paek is better than either player since he won two cups on Pittsburgh. And he's Korean. Korea > Canada and Russia.

Part of that is Lemieux played 41 of his 107 playoff games post age 30. Between bad early management and then injuries/retirement, he didn't play all that much in the playoffs in his career.

Through age 28 he was at 122 points in 66 games (1.85 ppg).
