The one thing I don't get is all the social media posts about 'McCrybaby', which is pretty much the opposite of what he should be called. He basically hasn't said a peep about all the crap he goes thru, doesn't beg and whine for calls like certain players we know, and he just took matters into his own hands. Pretty much the exact opposite of a crybaby. Very strange.

I saw Sidney Crosby kinda stuck up for Connor today. He gets it, he got targeted a lot and was seriously injured, hindered his prime years a bit.

Sidney was called a crybaby by his haters because he went at the refs a lot. He took a lot of punishment, blatant attempts to injure, he wasn’t some horrible diver either, he just actually went at the refs.

I just watched this old “crybaby Crosby” montage made by some Philly hater. He maybe dives once when he gets crosschecked in the back. Basically the rest of the clips are attempts to injure, including a horrific attempt at his knee by a Lightning player.

I think Crosby yapping back at the refs eventually helped him. Mcdavid plays through everything, for ten damn years now. He doesn’t complain a lot about refs or anything, plays through the constant non calls, he’s had some brutal attempts at injury against him too. Maybe McDavid should have been more vocal. Ten years and it’s the same shit, they let players cheat against him constantly and it must be infuriating.

There’s so many haters and I can honestly say I never hated Sid, I never thought he was a crybaby either, he always played like a grinder. But I’m pretty sure most sane fans want to see generational talents play the sport that they love, is it fun to allow cheating against them? Even crap like slewfoots that could risk their careers? Crosby could have had higher scoring seasons if he wasn’t injured, it would have been better for the league.

Imagine the next kid that’s blessed by the hockey gods has their career cut short.

Just let the man f***ing play, stop allowing the cheating, fix the reffing. Mcdavid has been a solider for a decade, he’s a generational superstar, he doesn’t dive, he plays honest and hard hockey, give the man more respect for gods sake. f***ing league man.

Sure, I agree--in the sense that the terminology of "protecting the stars" shouldn't be used. It's never been about "protecting" stars, which suggests special treatment.

The stars' "special treatment," if anything, comes from their own ability to play hockey better than most other players. Connor McDavid is going to have the puck more than other players. He's going to skate faster. He's going to shoot better. He's going to have a bigger effect on the game than lesser players. By extension, he's going to naturally draw more infractions by virtue that the other team has to work harder to stop him. Calling the game by the book isn't about protecting him; it's about not punishing him for being better than everyone else. This has always come down to an executive decision to effect parity in the league.

Calling the obvious infractions against guys like McDavid has never been about protecting star players. But it needs to be made clear: not calling penalties for infractions against McDavid is about protecting the shittier players and teams in the NHL.
Bravo. You worded this perfectly.

Lol Oilers with the lamest statement of all time.

I want to say that the oilers ownership and entire executive brass are unequivocally a bunch of f***ing limpdick p***yes. Absolutely spineless. This statement is extremely weak and says very little, and YET, STILL, NONE OF THEM would attach their name to it. None of them have anything to say or any desire to stand up for the players on the ice. Damning, and pathetic.

I couldn’t care less if the entire head office was fired and replaced.

I'm glad this suspension is blowing up into a bit of a viral media/fan discussion. NHL reffing and enforcement has been shit for years, and the NHL doesn't change or improve the on ice product unless it's shamed into doing so.

Unfortunately, I doubt this has the legs like when they were finally forced to address the NHL's problems with headshots. An injured player down and out on the ice makes a much more dramatic statement than a bunch player quotes lapped up by the sports media for a week out of the year during their never ending clickbait news cycle.

Those people are morons that’s all there is to it. Mcdavid never complains

So here are the refs’ options as I see them:

1) They blow it dead because of Garland's hold or interference.
Result? Oilers are up in arms as they had the puck. Maybe they win the draw maybe they don't...50-50 benefit. Oh yeah, there's 10 seconds left.

2) The ref puts his hand up for a delayed penalty.
Result? Nothing happens as the Oilers have the puck. Maybe they give it to a Canuck. Maybe the Canuck is smart enough to not play it. No benefit.

3) Both players are called for interference/holding/roughing.
Result? 5 on 4 for 10 seconds, without McD on the ice, and the faceoff is outside.

Which of those should it have been?
The whole time I've been watching hockey, it's typically #1. The moment there is a skirmish, roughing, wrestling match like this during play they typically
  • Blow the whistle
  • Linesmen rush in, then grab & separate the guys
A delayed interference/holding/roughing call is for a short infraction (in the time domain), not something as lengthy and escalating like this.

p.s. ALL other players on the ice did NOT receive a minor penalty. see: Demko

NOTHING will ever change if people don't speak up. It applies to everything. Especially how some Oilers reporters and workers are so inept at their jobs the only reason they would be there is because no one ever spoke up about them. Like how many dumb questions did McDavid take today? Wish he went full Marshawn Lynch but the league will not allow any personality at all.

Here is my prediction. In the next few weeks that Oilers are going to get called for every ticky-tack thing they do. The refs will send a message about criticizing them.

In his media availability it seemed McDavid was careful to not criticise the refs but instead the league for their mandate towards inconsistency in when the rules are applied so they can have their precious parity

Which is the criticism that should be levelled at the league constantly, until they pull their head out of their ass and act like a professional league

Unfortunately, the league would be more than happy to make an example of McDavid and the Oilers if McDavid did go there. The correct thing is to avoid more consequences, rest up, and go all out on the ice once returning.

I have a friend of a friend who worked in the NHL league office and apparently the joke around there was something to the effect of "hey Gary, it's your boy Katz calling again". Apparently Katz was pretty active in phoning up Bettman to give his opinion, complain, etc.

If true (and I have no reason to believe this person would lie) then it shows that behind the scenes the Oilers do try and get their point across and advocate. My opinion would be that this has done absolutely f***ing nothing. This behind the scenes shit doesn't work. The Oilers are a wagon, possession dominant team and draw some of the fewest calls in the league. The Keith cap situation. Sending a draft pick to the fLames for a prorated season (literally never before done). Nurse suspension being upheld even though every time before or since the 1-gamer has been rescinded. McDvid getting molested every single game and then getting 3 games for finally snapping because this shit league doesn't call penalties on neckguard p***yes like Judy Garland, etc....

They gotta start making waves in the media, not behind the scenes. Look at bitch ass whiney teams like the Refalanche, or when the fLames made that video of Gaudreau not drawing calls? It literally worked. Time for someone in the org to give their balls a tug and call the league out.

If those Colin Campbell emails getting out some years back didn't do anything to change the officiating in this sport then nothing will, tbh.
