I love pissy Leon. Hopefully he's angry tonight and takes it out on the Capitals.
This should be pinned in every thread on this topic. Well said.Sure, I agree--in the sense that the terminology of "protecting the stars" shouldn't be used. It's never been about "protecting" stars, which suggests special treatment.
The stars' "special treatment," if anything, comes from their own ability to play hockey better than most other players. Connor McDavid is going to have the puck more than other players. He's going to skate faster. He's going to shoot better. He's going to have a bigger effect on the game than lesser players. By extension, he's going to naturally draw more infractions by virtue that the other team has to work harder to stop him. Calling the game by the book isn't about protecting him; it's about not punishing him for being better than everyone else. This has always come down to an executive decision to effect parity in the league.
Calling the obvious infractions against guys like McDavid has never been about protecting star players. But it needs to be made clear: not calling penalties for infractions against McDavid is about protecting the shittier players and teams in the NHL.

That's the crux of it right there. The NHL has no idea what fans want to see. they are completely oblivious to the fact that fans want to see stars do their thing. The league truly believes that fans want to see 4th line scrubs drag the best players in the league down to their level because that's "old time hockey" Well it's not old-time hockey. I'm old, and old time hockey was somebody would do that Gretzky and Semenko would hop over the boards and murder that guy. THAT was old-time hockey.Really I’m not even mad about the suspension.
I’m mad about the fact it even got to that point.
This league loves scrubs more than it’s stars and that is why they are losing viewers.

The NHL doesn't want that but they still allow the stars to get molested on ice, but then they say they don't want the players to police themselves either, while simultaneously telling the refs to strive for "parity" and to "keep games close". The NHL has literally become the worst of both worlds.
So here are the refs’ options as I see them:
1) They blow it dead because of Garland's hold or interference.
Result? Oilers are up in arms as they had the puck. Maybe they win the draw maybe they don't...50-50 benefit. Oh yeah, there's 10 seconds left.
2) The ref puts his hand up for a delayed penalty.
Result? Nothing happens as the Oilers have the puck. Maybe they give it to a Canuck. Maybe the Canuck is smart enough to not play it. No benefit.
3) Both players are called for interference/holding/roughing.
Result? 5 on 4 for 10 seconds, without McD on the ice, and the faceoff is outside.
Which of those should it have been?

That's just flat out wrong thinking. it's not a question of the ref running all these scenarios through his head and deciding what's the best option, that's not his job, his job is to call infractions. If he puts his arm in the air, and McDavid sees that, I guarantee the crosscheck doesn't happen regardless of when and if the Canucks get possession and the play gets whistled down. McDavid sees no delayed penalty forthcoming gets frustrated and lashes out, then HE is the one who is punished by the league for the refs not doing their jobs.So here are the refs’ options as I see them:

The other problem is the talking heads on intermission panels who know this is happening and act like it’s okay. They’re like NHL state media. That's the crux of it right there. The NHL has no idea what fans want to see. they are completely oblivious to the fact that fans want to see stars do their thing. Actually they are affecting the outcome of the game by refusing to call obvious infractions. That's just flat out wrong thinking. it's not a question of the ref running all these scenarios through his head and deciding what's the best option, that's not his job, his job is to call infractions. The root of the problem is the NHL believes if it calls a lot of penalties, they're deciding the outcome of the game when in reality it's the PLAYERS WHO ARE CHEATING that is deciding the outcome of the game.
the equivalent would be a cop not arresting a murderer because the murderer has a family and the cop blames himself that the murderer is now in jail and can't look after his family.
The NHL takes all the accountability of the players for cheating away.
I don't think anyone is asking "preferential treatment" People just are tired of seeing the best player in the world be punished for being the best player in the world.I was born in the year of 1994, and the league STILL doesn't change any f***ing thing about the officials. How comical. I know Connor has too much class to say or do it, but if I were in his shoes, I'd pull a Lemieux.Irked Lemieux threatens retirement
Mario Lemieux said he is tired of getting kicked around, and is unsure if he's willing to take it after this season.www.tampabay.com
Pittsburgh coach Eddie Johnston said the NHL has to protect its marquee players the way the NFL protects its quarterbacks. He said players such as Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky should receive "preferential treatment."
Bunch of old ass dinosaurs running this league.
This is an interesting take. I'd add one further that instances like the league actively not calling infractions directed at McDavid and then suspending him for his reaction is setting further stage for Connor to see the league as operating against himself, and other star players. This would lead to a feeling that only the team, the room, Draisaitl, coaching staff etc got his back.I want to thank the league for making Connor mad. He probably needs that motivation.
Probably ups the chance he renews here too.
I think both things can be true. I think McDavid is probably crosschecking Garland in the head no matter what, and frankly he deserves it. That's a chicken shit way to win a game. Sure, you could just tackle everyone on the ice for the last 10 seconds, or rip their sticks out of their hands. Do you think the NHL wants that garbage at the end of every game? That's just flat out wrong thinking. it's not a question of the ref running all these scenarios through his head and deciding what's the best option, that's not his job, his job is to call infractions. I don't think I've ever seen this dynamic better stated. Beautifully worded.Sure, I agree--in the sense that the terminology of "protecting the stars" shouldn't be used. It's never been about "protecting" stars, which suggests special treatment.

I'm not a fan of Subban particularly but he's 100% bang on.
It's hilarious how many former players like him, Whitney, Pronger, etc have spoken up about how horseshit the officiating is.
I'm not sure that's actually true? Like if there's a scrum behind the play, or someone jumps another guy, they often blow the play down immediately. In this case, I think you're likely correct, in that the Oilers probably wouldn't have given the puck up right away, and I'm not sure they'd even have wanted to with that little amount of time left on the clock. But I think they probably could've blown it dead if they wanted to.I agree, they weren't going to call Garland for anything. That's really wrong. I'm sure Garland was even expecting to get called. Its pretty common in in the game to take a penalty in the final seconds if you are under pressure in your on end.
however
What PK is missing is that we had possession the whole time. The only way they could have blown the play dead is if we were getting the penalty.
Lowetide is a dinosaur like the rest of them. Atrocious that he says that. F*** all of those guy who think this way.1440 is going at it.
Lowetide and Donovan saying “this is hockey that’s the way it is, suck it up” and the younger guy whose name escapes me is saying “this isn’t the way hockey should be”. I am on the younger guy side. Call all of the f***ing penalties and let the skill shine. f*** these bottom 6 players and Trouba’s

The NHL really should add a rule where a penalty in the last ten seconds adds 10-15 seconds back on to the clock. It really should be a full two minutes, but let's not introduce too much math for the big brains in the head office.
So here are the refs’ options as I see them:
1) They blow it dead because of Garland's hold or interference.
Result? Oilers are up in arms as they had the puck. Maybe they win the draw maybe they don't...50-50 benefit. Oh yeah, there's 10 seconds left.

Which of those should it have been?
I believe the ref has discretion to blow the play dead when the arm goes up in certain cases like this. There is another option:
If the ref puts his arm up the Oilers could give up possession in order to get the extra man on the ice for whatever time is left.
I want to see which game this POS referee refs next. It's just insane how much they manage the games. Just do your job (unless the league is telling them to do this) and call legit things. They ruined that EDM-VAN game within half a period.is there any repercussions for the referees in this game?
Some players get away with it who don't have a rep like McDavid, then you have an asshole like Sam Bennett who does incredibly stupid stuff but never seems to get suspended from it. It's mind boggling.OK
Protect from what?
Holding?
I know I know
I don't like that its the same suspension the Myers got but it was a crosscheck to the face a week after he got away with an elbow to the chin. Don't be naïve to think the 2 aren't related, no doubt he was at least contacted about that elbow.
