In reality I think what both McDavid and Myers did is def 3 game suspension territory. The annoying part is the inconsistency of these types of suspensions and how this boiled over before McDavid did what he did. Clearly if he wasn't sat on for 10 seconds he isn't in this position. Crosschecking a guy in the face isn't the right way to go about it though.

Really I’m not even mad about the suspension.

I’m mad about the fact it even got to that point.

This league loves scrubs more than it’s stars and that is why they are losing viewers.

If you think the outrage or even the cross check to garlands face is based on this one play. You have your head in the sand. It’s because the guy has the puck more than any other player in the league. Other players consistently take liberties against him knowing the refs don’t usually call anything. Proven by the fact he sits at about 200th place in penalties drawn per 60. Plus over the past couple years it appears that he has been battling through a lot of nagging little injuries. I wonder why that is? So yeah, it’s not about protecting him from garland holding him this one time. Like it’s a one time thing. Open your eyes.
ok ok
you've convinced me. perhaps that tweet doesn't go far enough. not promoting the league does not send a clear enough message. He should go further.
AND
Spector should interview some more sportsman like players for their opinion. like Avery and Dave Schultz.
Stauffer should have 2 heart attacks in public over this too
that will come off as much more mature.
It will match the whining about the treatment of star players that consistently comes out of Vegas and Colorado and Pittsburgh and Washington

100% it was suspension, I have no issue with it at all. Being held or tackled doesn't justify want he did.

However, I love that he did it, I love the mean streaks in McDavid's and Drai's game. The refs didnt do anything so connor did, its that simple. Connor will do what it takes to make room for himself or make people think twice about going after him.

The 3 game suspension doesnt hurt the Oilers or McDavid, and quite frankly IMO McDavid could use the week off.

It also brings light to the fact that refs totally like shit slide that they need to call and the players and retired players coming to the defense of the reason behind McDavid doing what he did is reassuring, and maybe the refs call the game better.

Sure.. meanwhile I see the likes of Jokic or SGA pulling up to the free throw line constantly with how much the officials there call infractions on the other team when both players have the ball. Mahomes is easily protected by the refs in the NFL, and I can say that as a non NFL fan.
I'd take the opinion of a man who has as much experience and accolades in the NHL in Corey Perry than I ever would on Nielson.

he really doesn't understand?

Other leagues call penalties against players than take down star players illegally. Almost everytime. Unlike the NHL which will do it once and ignore the rest because "optics"

The NFL goes to extremes but the NHL goes to the other end of extremes by allowing plugs to haul down or impede star players from blowing past them based purely skill with moves that are illegal according to the rulebook.

Bruce McCurdy responded to his tweet saying:
Storylines you never see: "With the Warriors trailing by 3 in a last-possession situation, Steph Curry was tackled by an opponent and pinned to the floor as the clock ticked down..."

Bingo.

You guys are crazy if you think McDavid would ever consider or even want to turn down Team Canada.

He's been waiting his entire pro career for a chance to put on that Jersey.

You’re correct on that. He’s been waiting his whole career to wear a Team Canada jersey as a pro, and as much as fans hate this ‘best on best’ fiasco of a tourney, the players seem pretty pumped for it. As much as us fans want Connor to give the league the middle finger every chance he gets, he knows from experience that calling out the league on anything just amounts to more grief for himself. He tried it once by embarrassing a ref during a game earlier in his career, and he’s paid for it ever since. From
the moment he was drafted here, the league has treated him like the red headed stepchild, seemingly wishing he would just go away. Nothing but a nuisance to their goal of having every single player be exactly the same, just a plus worker bee. I would be thrilled if Connor told the league to go F themselves, but sadly it’s likely not going to happen. The league has wasted an opportunity to promote a once in a lifetime talent, and they are more than fine with that approach, weirdly they actually seem to enjoy knocking him down a peg or two any chance they get. Great sport and players, beyond awful and corrupt league that is doing its best to drive away diehard hockey fans.

Sure, I agree--in the sense that the terminology of "protecting the stars" shouldn't be used. It's never been about "protecting" stars, which suggests special treatment.

The stars' "special treatment," if anything, comes from their own ability to play hockey better than most other players. Connor McDavid is going to have the puck more than other players. He's going to skate faster. He's going to shoot better. He's going to have a bigger effect on the game than lesser players. By extension, he's going to naturally draw more infractions by virtue that the other team has to work harder to stop him. Calling the game by the book isn't about protecting him; it's about not punishing him for being better than everyone else. This has always come down to an executive decision to effect parity in the league.

Calling the obvious infractions against guys like McDavid has never been about protecting star players. But it needs to be made clear: not calling penalties for infractions against McDavid is about protecting the shittier players and teams in the NHL.

If you roll back the tape on recent cross checking suspensions, from Matthews to Meier and even Myers in the same game… I just don’t see how the physical mechanics of what McDavid did is comparable to those guys. He has a quick reactionary glancing blow, vs. A calculated front-on high-leverage full-energy connection directly to the center of the face with no mitigating or confounding circumstances or distractions. Also, critically important: during the play, in the middle of an illegal interference “scrum”, vs. AFTER the play, assault with a weapon outside of the “hockey game”.

and McDavid gets MORE games in the suspension? Garlands head is also chest-height (stick height), fwiw. Hard to cross check him in the shoulder or the chest without ducking down below your knees. Hell, remember when the game was OVER and Pietrangelo raised his stick over his f’ing head and assaulted Draisaitl two-handed? 1 game suspension? This is three? That crosscheck must have really hurt Garland’s feelings, because he looked a little upset afterwards- he might need to go on emotional leave. But physically completely unharmed, because it was a glancing reactionary blow.

Anyway, the actual physical mechanics aside, it’s a bullshit situation and the refs and safety ops and the league in general are f***ing garbage. There is NO WAY McDavid should be going out of his way to help them gouge fans out of millions of dollars in a meaningless non-IIHF tournament mid-season during a cup window for the Oilers. It’s outside his responsibility and below him, ethically. Stand up for yourself and for fair, decent people.

I don’t see any need to get into the weeds of “protect your stars” type rhetorical bullshit. It’s just going to have other fanbases whining about “special treatment”. How about FAIR, EQUITABLE treatment? Can we start there? Then we can worry about “special treatment” for the guy who are selling enough jerseys to bankroll half the league’s basement-dwellers in sub-optimal markets. Seriously, the fact that the org is too weak to stand up on this is disgusting, f*** Katz and all the executives. And our “ambassador” Gretzky is down there polishing Trump’s knob at the inauguration, along with Kane on the active payroll. Meanwhile all this goes unchallenged. Weak ass submissive little twinks IMO.

1440 is going at it.
Lowetide and Donovan saying “this is hockey that’s the way it is, suck it up” and the younger guy whose name escapes me is saying “this isn’t the way hockey should be”. I am on the younger guy side. Call all of the f***ing penalties and let the skill shine. f*** these bottom 6 players and Trouba’s
