It’s definitely a penalty but it doesn’t look that bad. I think McDavid might have decided to try to set a pick at the last second and caught Johansson’s face in the process.

I do wonder if Johansson dove though? Eg. O Kase and JJ Khaira (Oiler and a Czech lol) both were knocked out cold by very glancing blows in the last 5 years. Neither hit was viscious. They were just on their umpteenth concussions.

I know very little about Johannson but it sounds like he has a similar concussion history to Kase and Khaira.

elbows square on the chin dont take much, but ya, maybe even less if he has issues. Some of the Crosby concussion hits were very mininal, imo. so maybe thats part of it.

Regardless of anything else, he put his elbow onto his chin on purpose. It would probably be a game or two if it werent a star doing it.

If that weak attempt at an elbow is indeed an elbow then good for McDavid. Smash these goofs brains in if the refs aren't going to call dirty plays towards him. The league is joke. Trying to neuter its best player to even the playing field. Hartman is a textbook example of a goof the league needs to phase out.

I agree Hartman is a goofball. He is not my boy and I would not want him on my team but if you are saying Draisidel is an innocent by stander you have your Oiler's underoos on too tight. He is cheap and dirty but in a sly way. I am not sure what is worse!.

There was no accident in that Chicken Wing by McDavid. It is not like it is the first cheap shot he has delivered. Sneaky, dirty play.

What I wonder is if Johansson did something to 97 earlier in the game?

He moved his elbow a couple inches. Both McDavid and Johansson were in full motion and we are talking about a play that unfolded really quickly. The reason McDavid isn't getting discipline is because although it might have been intentional, it more realistically was not, and the whole play depended on snap movements by both players. It's just so unlikely that it was intentional

I don't think McDavid intended any serious consequences there, but the move did look malicious. Not the kind of movement that comes naturally. Should have been a 5-minute major and a game misconduct. Failing that, he should at least sit a game.

The concussion is likely from hitting the ice than it is from McDavid’s elbow.

He may very well be hurt and gotten hurt on the play but he went down in a Junior hockey dive way and he stayed down and got up very dramatically. It was a show. If he was hurt he’d be getting off the ice to get help.

The whole thing was an acting class if he just down he might have gotten the whistle blown but the way he threw his stick, threw his hands out and went down was 100% a show.

Hopefully it’s a quick recovery for him. A player with such extensive concussion history is prone to getting concussed again from contact like that, even if it is minimal.

If that gave him a concussion, he probably should retire. No snark. His head barely moved. Slight rotation to the right, which shouldn’t cause enough brain movement to result in a concussion.

It was a dirty play (that’s just how I classify elbows to the head) but pretty light as elbows go.
