yes, he is

but he didnt fail at a sacrifice judo throw to end up in that position. McDavid took him down, and Garland hung onto him, much as guys do to a stick when they are being hooked. Making it obvious to the ref, and in this case ALSO keeping McDavid from joining the play, which is exactly what !cDavid was doing to Garland originally. Two guys competing, breaking the rules in an effort to win. Then Garland continued the wrestling match and Connie had a fit.

Bit of a stretch to say it was a judo throw... I also don't think McDavid really intended to take Garland out of the play. McDavid simultaneously tries to dish the puck backward while leaning forward to brace for impact with Garland. Garland turned sharply to intercept McDavid and therefore is off-balance. The two collide, with McDavid braced and Garland not... Play turns into a reverse hit by McDavid. McDavid sits on Garland for a second before trying to rejoin the play... and in that time Garland takes advantage by wrapping his arm around McDavid's and twists to pin it under his chest. McDavid finally gets up, throws a couple shots back, and then Garland sticks his arm out into McDavid's waist to impede him again. Wes McAuley (near ref) isn't paying attention to any of this, Chris Lee is the back ref who decides to let everything escalate out of hand.

Doesn't absolve McDavid of his responsibility for the cross check.

He was, and it was pretty obvious watching the game live. It also hasn't been explained by those who are arguing otherwise why McDavid, the best player in the NHL, would take himself out of the play with 20 seconds left in the game, being down by 1 goal, to tie up Conor f***ing Garland lol.
Because Garland poked the puck off his stick and he was saving a turnover and a chance at an empty net.

Also if you're the Oilers it's much easier to score on a 5 on 4 than a 6 on 5.

McDavid stopped Garland as a turnover threat the moment he hit him. As soon as he tries to get up, Garland's bear hugging his arm. It's pretty obvious from the video. Garland admitted that he was holding McDavid, btw.

I think Garland is a weasel and definitely a little creep. But I don't blame him for doing that. There should have been a penalty against him, obviously, but it probably wouldn't have changed anything with so little time left.

Fair point on eliminating the turnover threat.

The point of "as soon as he tried to get up" is mute as he made no attempt to get up until the play was moving. Garland understood what was going on and if he was being held from the play he might as well hold onto the best player on their team also. Smart play and awareness as the refs put the whistle away prior to with Bouchard on Pettersson. Both players knew the whistles weren't coming out and tried to capitalize.

Horrible officiating ultimately lit the fuse to this whole scenario.

Oldoil said - You are so out of touch - McDavid fought in juniors with Erie and broke his hand, is that what a superstar should do? I’m pretty sure he has a lot bigger set than you hiding behind your keyboard.

Lol. I'm not hiding. I'll fight McDavid.
We did it. We reached peak dudebrah brain damage.

Chaos Giraffe you got right. Miller is just Bozo, but close enough. Soft Swede is Pettersson? Nobody calls him that though. Not sure who Little Creep is.
Check the posts earlier in this thread, on Pettersson. Sorry, wrong thread. Soft Swede is from the trade board thread that won't end. And the Little Creep is Garland, see five or six posts above this one. Sorry, 10 or 11.

Holding sure. But what about Bouchard holding Petey? Should have that not been a penalty as well ?

Whatever Pettersson and Bouchard were doing is not really relevant to what happened. I can't event see what your talking about and even if I did I can guarantee you there is no way Bouchard was holding onto Pete do any degree what Garland did.

Also k Garland is not doing anything other than to do hold McD at all costs. He is not running the odds of him getting a penalty because of what two other players did or didn't get away with moments earlier.
So you didn't watch the game I take it? Anyone who watched it knows exactly what happened earlier on that same shift, why Garland held McDavid and why the refs didn't call it. It's no big deal but generally it's better to watch or know about the thing you are discussing instead of guaranteeing what happened based on your imagination.

Pettersson got the puck deep in the Oilers zone, Bouchard pinned him there as the Oilers went up the ice, he didn't let him go until the Oilers already were 150 feet up the ice. It was a long while with a ref standing right there. Garland grabs McDavid afterwards on that same shift. The crowd, the tv crew, the refs, everyone knew damn clear that Bouchard got away with one there and it was deliberate choice made by the ref since it was a 1 goal game with very little time left.

That is 100% relevant to what happened. If they didn't let Bouchard get away with an obvious one then Canucks end that game on the powerplay. No crosschecks. If Bouchard doesn't pin a guy then Garland either doesn't grab McDavid or he gets called for a penalty and there's no crosscheck. Bouchard being given a freebie meant Garland knew he wasn't likely to be given a penalty for doing the same thing immediately after. It's also partly why Myers overreacted to Bouchard going to him (not that the reaction is justified at all).

As I said this was the consequence of game management, something I've come to despise. Just because Oilers were trying to come back doesn't mean they shouldn't be given penalties for obvious stuff. Just because you didn't call Bouchard doesn't mean you can't call Garland.

Who cares? It's hockey and a hockey play. McDavid was tackled and held on the ice. He is quite right to take matters into his own hands to protect himself and his ability to play. Star players have been targets in hockey since the first ape fell out of a tree with a stick. I coach McDavid and I tell him to protect yourself at all coats. I tell his team mates that 97 is your meal ticket.

To be clear, it’s not important to me whether McDavid escape punishment or if he hurts the other guy.

What’s important is he’s a prick to play against and that buys him an extra foot here and there to operate in because the next guy checking him doesn’t want to get speared, elbowed, cross checked or otherwise visited with some kind of pain. I like that for McDavid, I think it’s the correct way for superstars to keep people honest around them.
Remember when Crosby stepped out of his lane and tried to play that role? How did that work out for him?

McDavid needs to play his game. If he starts cheap shotting players he will get a taste of his own medicine and no one will care when he cries about it.

If McDavid is so soft he needs to crosscheck players in the face over some holding and roughing like last game . I guarantee it will come back to haunt him. It really is not a good look on him and he needs to toughen up a bit.

Cross-checking someone in the head is never a hockey play.
