The honorable Corey Perry has spoken.
Protecting him from what? Garland never tried to injure him.

-McDavid hits Garland and Garland makes sure to take McDavid down with him.

-Garland holds McDavids arm to take him out of the play while McDavid looks content to sit on him to
allow Bouchard to get a shot off.

-After Bouchards shot McDavid wants to get up but Garland doesn't allow him . (Could have called a penalty at this point on Garland)

-McDavid gets mad he is being held down and punchs him in the head (Possibly a roughing call on McDavid. I would have done the same thing)

-Refs either call both or call nothing and let the game go on. They call nothing

-Garland just got away with a hold and also is prob a bit mad about being punched in the head and goes after McDavid again to hold him (Should have been a call on Garland)

-McDavid is pissed and losses his cool proceeds to crosscheck Garland (5min Major)

Not sure what Perry is crying about protecting McDavid. It was a holding call for christ sakes.

McDavid and Myers both deserve 3 games. I thought it would be 2 games.
End of story people need to move on.

Lol they put out a statement???

McDavid has literally drawn the most penalties since he's come into the league. Acting like McDavid doesn't get any calls is just hilarious.
This season he drew 14 penalties in 43 games. He is ranked about #50 in the number of penalties drawn, despite leading the league in possesion in offensive zone. He is also ranked about #200 in penalties per minute played.

So, he is literally not drawing penalties, even if he is putting up with a lot of crap. This season he is actually not getting any call.

I'm not sure why I'm even entertaining this but to be fair to you maybe this is a definitions issue.

Wrapped means to fully embrace or place an arm, leg, finger around something, which the screenshots you've provided clearly shows is not happening. There is a lot of space between Garland skates as you somehow are not seeing in the screenshots you've posted. A hint is the color blue which is the color of McDavids pants. Also the skates not touching each other.. that's another clue.

Head-lock means a way of holding an opponent with your arm around their head so that they cannot move. This also, provided by your own screenshots, is clearly not what is happening. He's definitely pushing/holding McDavid but definitely not in a head-lock. The arm is usually around the other persons neck which again, is clearly not happening. On the video or in your own screenshots.

I don't understand your point anyways, are you saying this hypothetical/false scenario you're trying to convey - which you yourself in your screenshots have clearly pointed out is not whats happening - a reason for McDavid not to have been suspended or that it makes the cross check fair? I really don't get it.

What's the point in pretending something else is happening?

Your very first post to me was that I couldn't take myself seriously if I believed Garland was holding him down, using his legs to do it. To which I provided visual evidence.

I've posted the photos of:
1) Garlands legs up and clasping McD's thigh:
  • At 16.7 seconds remaining... the skate blades are about 2-3 inches apart at the heel. McDavid's thigh is considerably larger than that, don't be obtuse.
  • Still clasping at 14.6 seconds, with a similar gap… again, don’t be obtuse.

I also posted two photos with Garland using both hands on top and around McDavid's head again for well over a second. McDavid isn't moving... by your definition, that's a headlock or maybe what? He lost a contact? Why would McDavid keep his head down for that long?

Everyone and their dog can see he's trying to hold McDavid down. And nobody blames him for trying given the game context. But call a spade a spade and don’t feign surprise at McDavids reaction.

And what's the point?

I’ve chronicled my position, but basically if the refs can’t call the game, the players will escalate.

In this case, McD got frustrated after 6 seconds of being held and punched Garland in the head (deserved IMO).

That wasn’t enough for Garland or the refs, so 6 more seconds of holding and McD lays the lumber. Garland could have been hurt. It’s no good for anyone…

… but honestly, I’d support McDavid doing it again as a showcase for why we actually need to call the f’n rulebook… even if… especially if… one guy, or a handful of guys, is so good that the only defense is to cheat.

You are focussing too much on this one play, the issue is that he has players stepping in front of him as soon as he catches some speed, tripping him or falling on him almost every time he steps on the ice.

Each of these plays is a "nothingburger", just another "missed" penalty, but if the refs simply let everything keep happening, it is just a matter of time until he gets injured. And no, the same doesn't happen to every player, it does happen but not to this level. It is most team's strategy to syop McDavid by slowing him down before he gets the puck, which is hard to do without breaking the rules.

I’m hearing lots of people saying this. And I don’t mean hf posts.

I’ve heard former NHLers that are now analysts and commentators and I just don’t get this argument.

What would have prevented mcd from cross checking garland? Seeing a refs arm up to call a penalty with 5-10 seconds left in the game and the oilers in possession of the puck? Would he then yell at his teammates to give the puck to the Canucks to get a 5 second powerplay? Lol

People think mcd thought that much?

I think he’d just had enough of getting held and fought back.

Part of me is glad he did it to deter stupid play like that in the future. And I think the suspension was 1 game too long.

But this stuff about calling a penalty would have prevented things is ridiculous imo
They could have, arguable should have, called his punch to Garland when they were down. From a player safety perspective that would have prevented the next 6 seconds of holding which was then followed by the cross check.

It is a classic “lost control of the game” situation by the refs… they didn’t call any of the obvious calls… and so players escalated. Garland and McD included.

Recall that Vancouver had two arguable infractions while on the PP immediately prior to their game winning goal… so the temperature was already high

What is the point of this press release? If you aren't going to appeal it, just shut up and move on.
It is one of these situations where they have to say something, but can't say anything.
They have to show support, but cannot say what they think because league policy is to never blame the refs, they are beyond reproach.

The funny part is that if the Oilers did not release an anouncement, there would have been some hfboard fans which would interpret that the Oilers think McD deserves the punishment.

It's Katz way of saying that he's mad without having to dish out the kind of fine money that Dolan did lol.

The executive brass and Katz neglected to attach their name to the statement. So, they’re a bunch of p***yes. Straight up. It’s a mild statement to begin with and they still wont stand behind it. Sad.

Turn on the game halfway through to hear the Oilers announcers mention no McDavid in the first 3 words. They’ve mentioned they don’t have McDavid 2 times since typing this out.

Another Norris winner's take:

If the whistle blew then that means McDavid also had a penalty since the Oilers had the puck. Then the Oilers coach would complain to the media that the play was stopped, faceoff at center (both teams with penalties) and the Oilers lost their chance to win the game. If anything, the refs letting play go on was helping the Oilers try and tie the game.

Lmao they released a statement about it? Truly one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen an organization do. Did they write that statement over dinner at Joey’s?
