so when he's trying to get up and punches Garland in the back of the head because Garland is holding his arm...was what? all for show? That's really weak reasoning.
I'm not watching it again but there is a good 2-3 seconds where he's content to watch the 5 on 4 play unfolding in front of the net, and when he decides to get back in doesn't have much issue getting back up until Garland tackles him again.

What's most relevant though is what the refs see. When you get your replay view can hit pause and start analyzing the pixels it looks like his arm is in Garland, though it's pretty subjective to what extent that's hindering him. From the refs perspective though they probably see McDavid take down Garland then contently sit on him for a good stretch. Right after Bouchard decided to sit on Pettersson at the other end of the rink giving Edmonton an advantageous 5 on 4 going back in the offensive zone.

If the refs were going to make the 'right' calls, the McDavid/Garland mixup wouldn't have happened because they would have called Bouchard. Personally watching it real time I was laughing when Garland started grappling McDavid because I knew after the two take downs they let go they were going to keep letting em play and weren't going to call this either. Up until the point McDavid throws a little fit.

This is a terrible statistic to quote. The top guys in the league for this stat are fighters, because typically they have limited ice team and draw matching penalties by fighting.

As examples Draisaitl is 129th and MacKinnon is 257th in this stat.

What is better is to look at net penalties drawn. Since 2015 no one has a better net penalties drawn than McDavid. This nonsense that the league is against him needs to stop.

Some pretty disingenuous stuff from Stauffer

Honest question for those that are pissed off because of the refs on this particular sequence of events....I think pretty much everyone, including McDavid's most loyal fans, agree he deserved a suspension, but lots are unhappy because the refs let it get to that point. So the question is: in a perfect world, with perfect reffing, what do you suggest should have happened to change that outcome?

Nothing specific to this game - but since perfect reffing doesn’t exist, reffing that is as fair and as consistent as possible is what should happen and across the board irrespective of team or superstar status. By doing so, you eliminate the frustration and players are less likely to retaliate. The retaliation is the penalty being called as it should be based on the rules.

The outcome of this game may be no different irrespective of what happened. Canucks had a 1 goal lead.

They stop the play dead and hand out minors to both before it escalated. By the time the whistle was actually blown there were 2 seconds left on the clock. I'm sure they could've had like 10 seconds if they called it early

In a perfect world, perfect reffing does not correlate to a players overreaction. Plain and simple. That’s on the player. And this exercise is pointless because perfect reffing will never happen as a “perfectly reffed” game is just as subjective to fans as the rules themselves.

I can empathize with fans and players frustrated with poor officiating, we all see it. This does not act as a reason to go overboard, and it can rarely be used as a valid reason for a won or lost game.

That's fair, but I suspect most people up in arms are simply complaining about the Garland interference, which wouldn't have warranted a whistle until 2 seconds remaining. Agree, could have blown it down earlier...10 seconds or so remaining and throw McDavid in the box, but I doubt the biggest complainers would be happy about that.

Yeah, I get the bigger picture....I was simply looking at this 15-20 second sequence in isolation as that is what seems to be upsetting most.....but then again perhaps just the tipping point.

What are you even talking about here? The level of cope is.. I can't find words.

You just happened to miss Bouchard slashing Myers after Myers finished his check? So Bouchard is ticked off at Myers for finishing his check and slashes him. Myers got provoked by the slash and slashed Bouchard back. Bouchard then approaches him which would usually lead to some sort of escalation between two players obviously giving Myers some sort of indication to defend himself/engage physically. Myers stick ends up in his face instead of his chest area as Bouchard reacts to about being cross checked and his arms ride Myers stick upwards. Dumb play by Myers and he's going to serve 3 games for it.

I'd argue if there was any ill intent it was from McDavid out of pure frustration. Heat of the moment. I don't blame McDavid for it. Garland got under his skin. It's unfortunate that McDavid couldn't control his emotions.

Myers checked in on Bouchard as well making sure he was alright.. McDavid didn't check on Garland.. Ill intent from who exactly... hmm.. sort of indicates Myers was an accidental but really dumb play.. and the other.. well..

Is the inept non call you are referring to the Bouchard hold on Pettersson 30 seconds before any of the other stuff happened? I'd assume so but just double checking.

You’re coping so hard lmfao, Myers’ cross check was far worse. You’ll come around sooner or later.

The fact that there is so much talk about the league “protecting” stars from holds and fans wondering if there will be retribution to Garland from this play is nuts to me. Mind boggling takes in this thread.
But we need to protect our star athletes. McDavid's arm being held by a 5'7, 165lb Garland is absolutely as heinous as the headshots Mahomes takes when he slides.

We could knit pick and go back and fourth on this the entire day. Hell it’s been like that for days. Ultimately the referees failed both players and created this escalated situation by deciding not to defuse it earlier. Both committed infractions, both deserved to be penalized and yet neither were.
If the refs raise their hand for a penalty call on Garland only, play doesn't stop until the Canucks touch the puck, which they didn't. Edm would have to give up the puck to the Canucks and then win a faceoff with under 20 seconds or fewer to go to setup a 6-4 chance. If the Oilers don't give up the puck, play continues and would get stopped when McDavid got called for his penalty.

3 is a healthy margin?
Yes because Wilson, Marchand, Kadri and Tkachuk don't actually "draw" penalties. A lot of those a coincidental minors. In fact Wilson has a Net negative ratio.

I mean, it very clearly is against its top players. He is drawing a net of around one penalty every three to four games. Have you watched him play? I have to assume you don't actually watch hockey.

I'll give you another tip, although I assume you know what you are doing. When you say since _______'s rookie year, aka 2015 here, if it is an accumulation stat, it is not meaningful because it lines up directly with your player career.

Yes but every once in a while it seems like players or coaches or fans need to complain about it because the league just can't help itself but allow nonsense vs McDavid. He's the best possession player in the league at his skating speed and should always be at the top in penalties drawn. He's 54th in penalties drawn this season. It's not right

A child is disappointed when they're put in time out after hitting their sibling in the face. That's about as relevant as the Oilers statement.
