Mcdavid 5min Match Penalty: Cross check to the face of Garland (Suspended 3 games )

The problem is that Garland would probably refuse to fight. He's not a fighter, he's a shit starter and a diver. And beyond that, McDavid shouldn't take the chance of hurting himself.

McDavid should have just cross checked him to the body - not the head - or slashed him. Even if he spears him its probably not a suspension per prior NHL precedent. The problem is targeting the head which nobody can or should try to defend.
Garland has had NHL fights. McDavid is the turtle.

That Tom Wilson and Trouba has gotten away with murder before several times does not mean it was wrong to suspend McDavid. Only that it was wrong to not punish Wilson and Trouba! McDavid also has been allowed to get away with at least 3 clear cut suspendable acts before, so he is not the right person to bring up either!

While you're not wrong, it's still always correct to call the NHL out on its bullshit.

Man does history repeat itself.

I'm a Pens fan. Watched Lemieux's mid-to-late career as a kid (born in 88) and have watched the entire Crosby era. The league wasn't doing shit to protect its star players back then, and it doesn't do shit now. With that said, the league is way softer today than it was in the 80s/90s/00s.

McDavid puts up with less crap than stars did back in the day, but he still puts up with crap, and he doesn't have a Semenko or McSorley out there to help out, either.

The refs never should have allowed that game to escalate to the point that those late game antics transpired. With that said, you can't cross check guys in the face. He should eat his 3 games, and the league should get it through the thick skulls of these refs that they have to be better. Unfortunately, I have zero confidence in the latter happening.

Crosby seems to be on McDavid's side.

“I saw the cross-check,” Crosby told The Athletic following the Penguins’ morning skate in Los Angeles on Monday, about three hours before the suspension was levied. “But I couldn’t tell if it was his glove or his stick that hit him in the face.”

“It’s hard to say how bad it was from the angle that was available,” Crosby said. “You’re splitting hairs.”

“It’s like anything,” Crosby said. “Sometimes your emotions get the best of you. It’s a physical sport. The one time you see that, you probably didn’t see there nine hits that Connor took. Those ones are the ones that never make the highlights. When you retaliate, you make the highlights.”

“Whether it’s him or anyone else, it’s an emotional game,” Crosby said. “That’s going to happen sometimes. If there were calmer or cooler circumstances, he probably wouldn’t have done that.”

“That’s hockey,” Crosby said.

McDavid really needs protection from the league because... *checks notes* ...a tiny forward wrestled with him on the ice for a few seconds.

MY GOD HE COULD HAVE DIED!

Garland is like 5'7, it's embarrassing for McDavid that he was held down to the ice. That's probably why he snapped. Guys freak out at Garland all the time because of how small he is, but he's deceptively strong.

Seems like just a prototypical neutral answer.

...on skates maybe...seen him live in Montreal in '23 (Hockey Fights Cancer night) and I was a good foot taller than him with his skates on (I'm 6'7)...guy could have been a "small person" wrestler from the '80's...

Probably something we shouldnt look too much into when it comes from a podcast?
No reason to further rag on McDavid when this could be a purely made up scenario.
I always say for media, podcasts, etc., if they preference the statement with exactly how they phrased it here:
"We are hearing", that is basically hearsay. They have no reliable source on that matter.

What ever happened investigating to the point where you can say "My source tells me"....

Preferencing it like the way they did allows them to talk about it and not worry about it being right or wrong.

Honestly, smart play by Garland to just grab onto McDavid for the last 15 seconds.

either

a) McDavid snaps and takes them off the powerplay, also taking him off the ice entirely
b) McDavid is out of the play and their 6 on 5 advantage is now 5 on 4
c) Garland gets a penalty but there's not enough time for it to matter, and if the Canucks can win the draw the game is essentially over

lol what a petulant little baby

Now he's trying to extort the league. What a f***ing scumbag. The league needs to teach him a lesson.

How does a guy who's #1 in drawn calls over the last ~decade, who just crosschecked someone in the head because he was moderately interferred with, turn this into a "superstars aren't being protected" story. What an unlikeable dork.
Or, now hear me out because this is just a total hypothetical on my part, maybe these guys are not in the know on this situation. I know it's never happened before but maybe, just maybe, something got said on a podcast that wasn't true.

he's seems frustrated this year

there is a pretty big drop in his penalties drawn, this year sticks out like a sore thumb compared to other years. Maybe some kind of mandate from the league to the refs or something

Crosby obviously knows what he’s talking about but people will still take this further than it needs to. McDavid still deserved the 3 game suspension but I can see in the moment why he resorted to that. And you can tell from his face that he regretted it right after.
