That fixes nothing for Buffalo - they need another D added to what they have not to subtract one and replace with another

Power isn't McAvoy, but the difference isn't two additional 1st rounder prospects who have yet to play in the NHL.

So Power, a top 20 prospect, another top prospect, Krebs, and a 2nd? Its an awful deal for Buffalo.

I mean, I think the deal would likely be something like Power, Krebs and a 2nd for McAvoy.
Buffalo would be cutting bait on Power to get a different skill set given Owen's defensive issues.
Boston would be taking the risk on acquiring a younger player who can potentially be a top 5-10 guy like McAvoy.
Conceptually you then have a little bit more of a sensible top 4 in...

That trade makes much more sense. Power has a higher ceiling than McAvoy. Not saying Power is better but if his defense becomes as good as his offense he will be a top 10 defender in the league. I would probably only trade Power for a 1C.

Even as a "f*** it lets rebuild move", Power and Lorhei are redundant. Obviously, Power with the much better pedigree and ceiling, but both as left shot one way D that you hope become two way.
Its just Sabres like team building for the privilege of a 2nd round pick and a bottom six forward.

I think if you take out Bostons 2nd and add Pastrnak from bruins end and remove Ostlund and add the Sabres 2025 1st (to0 4 pickl then its a fair blockbuster

Because Owen Power is 22, saves the Bruins cap and allows them to start transitioning to a younger core.
Also comparing anyone on the Bruins besides McAvoy to Power is generally odd. Lindholm is probably the closest, but given his age and injury history, he ain't close.

It's also a LHD, RHD thing.
I think kids hoping to make the NHL better start playing RD in juniors even if they shoot left. A position always in demand. You become dime a dozen LD even if you go early in 1st round.

They're getting a defenceman who is more in the Dahlin "Norris caliber" tier for Power. And a solid, physical, two-way RHD that fits precisely what the Sabres need at that. At the expense of a collection of sort of "middle of roster" at best type prospects, none of whom are anything like a "sure thing". And they somehow get a 2nd round pick out of the deal for no apparent reason?
That's a win walking away for Buffalo.

It's still really just holding with overall trends. Same as it's always been mostly. Left handed people are ~10% of the population. Add in that in certain countries outside Canada, right handed people are more likely to become RH shooters rather than LH shooters and you still only really get to maybe ~25% in a meaningful sense, technically the quick math says ~36% of players who have played a game in the NHL this season are RH shooters. That's a pretty optimistic number...probably partially because natural RH shots do get some extra leash and opportunity.
As a result, there are so many Left Shot defencemen who are plenty comfortable playing their off side. They've had to do it off and on throughout their developmental years and careers. But there are still advantages for defencemen playing their "strong side" that no amount of familiarity is going to overcome for some coaches and systems.
So...trying to teach kids to shoot right instead of left is basically what it'd have to come down to. And that seems like the sort of avenue that actually just limits the ceiling for that kid as a player. If it's not what they're naturally inclined toward, i can't imagine it'd be that productive. Kids do tend to just pick up a stick...and use it a certain way.
It's like trying to teach a kid to be a lefty pitcher to get a bunch of free money in baseball. Simple enough on a superficial level, but nearly impossible in a real practical sense. Especially once you realize the staggering odds stacked against any sports player kid actually "making it" as a top level professional. Really not worth it and kind of goofy tbh.
But it does definitely make guys like McAvoy more "valuable". Even if Power does manage to develop into a similar caliber player (which is questionable at best), he'll still be a less rare player than someone like McAvoy. For his handedness and that physical and lockdown defensive ability as well.

I think power is being underrated due to his age. Is he perfect? No. But he's only 22 and on pace for 44 points playing on the 2nd power play.
Mcavoy didn't get over 32 points until he was 24, though that's probably because he rarely plays more than 70 games.
Power still has lots to improve but he's still got potential too. And adding in helenius and ostlund honestly helps Boston expand to potentially add other high end pieces.
If you're going full rebuild there's not much point holding mcavoy for 4 years while you're trying to find more gems.

Lets ignore Ostlund completely for now. How exactly did you come to the conclusion the Helenius, a player drafted 14th overall in the last draft who was rated by McKenzie to go even higher (9th), is a "sort of "middle of the roster" at best type" of prospect?

It’s an interesting idea, but an overpay from Buffalo. McAvoy with Dahlin and Byram would be a very nice group.

McAvoy FWIW hasn't been in the Norris discussion since 2022. Bruins might be smart to sell on him and get someone a little younger in Power. I dont think hes regressing but his hype level has definitely died down in the last couple of years.
