Maybe Torts Wasn't the Problem

Gaborik ran himself out of town.

How? He kept his mouth shut, went with whatever Tortorella told him to do, didn't create problems when he was forced into being a player he never has been.

He ran himself out of town because he couldn't score? No one on the team could score. Why wasn't Richards run out of town then?

His play should have been enough to beat that Devils team. Was it superb? No. But then again look at the team in front of him. They quit in games 2,4,5, and 6. After the first 2 periods in game 6 they were completely out of gas. Henrik came up HUGE down the stretch. They couldn't close out. In game 5 i've agreed, he did not play his best in the slightest. Game 4 the team was a no show, they didn't come in energized or enthused at all. Game 2 same deal. Can't blame Henrik for that.

So his play was outstanding but it wasn't superb?

And how the flying **** did the Rangers quit in game 5 when they limited the shots on Hank to SIXTEEN ****ING SHOTS! The Rangers put up 3 goals and Hank couldn't stop a ****ing beach ball. That's merely "not playing his best" to you? That was one of the worst performances I have seen from a Vezina winner that I can remember. Did you ever take a second to think that perhaps Hank's "performance" in game 5 was a backbreaker (emotionally) to the team?

Hank was strictly mediocre outside of his two great games (the two shutouts). He was not outstanding, he was not superb, he was not even great. He was mediocre or good at times. I'm sorry, but that's such a bunch of crap to not place blame on Hank. What a joke. This is what annoys me about some of you guys on here. You are so damn blind when it comes to Hank that you cannot place blame on the guy. The entire team is to blame. Torts, the skaters, and Hank are all implicit in that loss.

I am not blaming everything on Hank. I am merely placing blame on him as it should be -- along with the skaters and coaches. He did not do anything in that series to warrant the defense you are giving him.

Did we play FIVE good game all year?

Did we do anything well under Torts, except blocked shots?

-Did we attack well? No.

-Did we PP well? No

-Did we defend well? No (constant major breakdowns).

-Did we PK well? No (horrible for a team with Hank).

-Did we play physical? No (I wonder if any team in the league laid fewer big hits than us).

There was one reason and one reason only we managed to get one of the last POs spots, Hank.

This.

The team managed to scrap together MAYBE 10 good games this season. They were a disaster.

Uh, he ran himself out of town because he played like ****. Funny how he didn't pick up his scoring when he went to Columbus, isn't it? Gaborik is shot. Ol' Yeller the dude.

If you're not going to play any defense whatsoever you better be producing offense, he didn't. Didn't play that great in Columbis either.

The fact that people blame Torts system for his failures when he's had some of the best seasons of his career playing in it is just a big joke.

I don't see the need to classify either/or as "the" problem. Only thing that I can confidently say is "the" problem is Cigar boy.

Bingo. ****ing bingo. Hence why I point to everyone on the God damn team (from Torts to the goalie to the skaters). The entire damn team is to blame. And who put the team together (including the coaching)? Sather.

That's his game. If you want everyone to play a complete game that's a good way to not score goals.

Every player has defensive responsibilities. It doesn't matter what line you play on or how much skill you have.

Remember the Ovechkin Xbox controller gif? Was that lack of effort because, "that's his game"?

He had as many points in his first 8 games with Columbus than he had in his previous 18 with the Rangers.

Pro-rate Gaborik's production in Columbus for an 82 game season and he's a 55 point player...

He didn't play well last season. Most likely due to injuries. There's still no excuse for a lazy backcheck.

You make up a quote and instead of apologizing when called on it, you criticize your critics.

Are you a lawyer?

Apologize for what exactly? It's called hyperbole, it's a pretty common occurrence around here, maybe I should have added the sarcasm smiley?

I'm sorry you didn't realize that, you'd think you would considering this topic has been dissected 100 times over already in the last week or so, and that the point I was illustrating with my horrible, sinful, deceitful made up quote was that the players were unhappy with Torts. Which again has been discussed a multitude of times.

So yes, I'm sorry that I mislead you. Now do you want to leave that alone and discuss the actual topic?

Oh, so the change of scenery motivation had nothing to do with it? Gaborik was not a good player with Columbus save a game or two.

By the way, he went pointless in 5 of those 8 games.

Gaborik had 5 goals in hist first 5 games with the Rangers this year, too. It's easy to cherry pick samples.

Rather have him than Gaborik. At least he is useful when not in the offensive zone.

Fine, he's a better all-around player. But we still need more goal scoring. I don't think a sane person would argue that. Fixing that problem is on Sather. But I don't trust putting whomever we might acquire with a stubborn defensive-minded coach. Like I said, alot of problems with this team, particularly scoring, were not necessarily Tort's fault, but a new philosophy will allow us to address these problems without worrying about certain players clashing with the coach.

Certain players have to be allowed to do whatever they want. Ovechkin dominated this year because Oates lets him do what he wants. I don't particularly trust Sather to fix our offense, but we're stuck with him. It all would have been a moot point without a coach that allows more offensive freedom. Yeah some guys just score and are useless aside from that. Sometimes you just have to deal with it to put goals up on the board.

Still had more goals playing with a torn labrum than Gaborik.

I don't care if he has a torn brain. If Ryan Callahan is a star sniper on your team you need scoring.

If anything, that shows just how streaky he is. And since he is nowhere near as fast as he was when he first came here, it's even worse for his overall game.

Not to mention another surgery this summer, he's nearing the end. When guys whose games have always been one dimensional start to fall apart they decline pretty quickly.

Is that a joke of a statement? What if I said "Did you ever take a second to think that the team's 'performance' in Game 4 was a back breaker (emotionally) to Hank?". They're professionals. They played plenty of emotional games. It's on the coach to focus them if they are letting any type of emotions get to them from game to game. Don't insinuate that his poor performance in game 5 is the reason they threw the towel in after being in the game all of game 6. I could do the same with team's performance in game 4 and the effect it could have potentially had on Henrik in game 5. Doesn't mean it's true.

His play was outstanding in 4 of the 6 games. 2 of the 6 it was not. Henrik is not perfect but HE is the reason we got to where we did. Don't fool yourself. This team would be no where with out him. It wouldn't have gone to the ECF last year with out him. They wouldn't have made the playoffs any of the other years Torts was here either.

Rask played like horse **** in game 7 of the first round. Scratch that, he played like horse **** from game 5-7 of the first round. His team picked up the slack when he was blowing it. Our team was incapable of doing that because of the style of play we incorporated. That easily could have been us last year against the Devils. Easily, had we ever had a semblance of offense.

If we go back to the Devils series last year the amount of quality chances they had on us was far greater than the quality chances we had on them, despite the shots count. We can rack up 50 shots, doesn't mean any of them are dangerous.

Back to what you were saying. Besides the shut outs Hank wasn't superb? Game 6? He kept the ****ing team in it when they just decided to pack it in. All 18 skaters were just going through the motions, they barely had any intensity the final period and OT. Henrik made some unreal stops during that time period.

And talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I'm blind that im not blaming Henrik? Why in the world would I place blame on him? Everyone who thinks they can come out and be like "oh people are so blind, henrik is great but he doesn't play up to his vezina caliber for 2-3 games... so he's a big part of the reason we lost" is blind themselves. Are you that ignorant to actually sit and type how he is expendable because he didn't rob 2 wins for us? Is playing up to standards stealing 4 games every series? Cause he seems to do that more than any other goalie on any other team. Disgusting. He is your ****ing team. It's just him that shows up many nights, yet you still sit and complain about him.

He had 1 bad game that series. Every other game was winnable if the team in front of him was competent on offense.
