In my book, how "it turned out in the end" is that we got 6 seasons of NHL play, not that we got two late round picks after those 6 years of play.

See what I'm driving at here? The 6 seasons of play are part of the value delivered in the trade. They're part of that calculus. You can't just say, "well, we paid a first round prospect for Tlusty, but only got a 3rd and a 6th who amounted to nothing, so in the end we lost that first round pick for nothing".

Again, I was just referring to how the trade ended up wrapping up. Literally just posted who we ended up taking with the picks we got from Winnipeg for anyone who was interested.

But by all means keep it going.

Just as an example, here's a potential late-rounder that I would love the Canes to take a chance on. Interestingly, he plays for the same team as the still(!)-playing Jaromir Jagr:

But yeah, to me, if the Canes get, say, Lysell at 26 and Scott Morrow in the 2nd round, that's what I would call a really good start.

ok--is it Jiri Tichacek who plays for Rytiri Kladno--or is it Rytiri Kladno who plays for Jiri Tichacek? "merica....

NHL Mock Draft: Scott Wheeler maps out who goes after Owen Power in the first round

Wheeler's mock has the Canes taking Rosen at #26

All the higher-ranked names (Raty, Lysell, Svechkov) were gone.

The quote about the five "scream 'Hurricanes pick'" is what always makes me think experts aren't much better at this than us. I heard another analyst (try not to call them scouts, though what they are doing is basically scouting prospects) say his concern with Pinelli is he doesn't play with pace. I am pretty sure it was Scouch.

I strongly disagree with that, but a big reason for that is because I've been friends (in frequent DMing terms) with Will Scouch for a while now and we always like to talk about prospects that aren't typically covered in first or second round talks.

Was listening to his latest episode while doing yard work this weekend. He was asked to rank Finnish D prospects. His top pick was Ervasti who the PSF model had identified several months ago. The model makes it much easier to pay attention to prospects outside the consensus top 50.

I finally just remembered the streamer I wanted to watch during the draft. It's scouch and it's not me. Edit: Now I just read the posts above.

There's always a few head-scratching droppers every single draft. I still see Lysell as potentially being that guy in 2021 because of a combination of size and (IMO minor) personality concerns. I can see any of Lysell, Raty, Svechkov, Bourgault, Robertsson, Stankoven, and L'Heureux on the board when the Canes pick. Some more long-shots at being available than others, especially Lysell and Svechkov, but still an interesting thing to watch out for. To me, if Lysell is on the board at #26, he's an auto-draft. In fact, I would personally run to the podium in record time to make sure that it wasn't some mirage. For the other guys, though, it's a bit tougher. I have Raty/Svechkov/Robertsson ranked pretty closely to each other. I would very slightly lean Raty, but close.

Francesco Pinelli

2020-21 Team: HDD Jesenice (#71)
Date of Birth: Apr. 11, 2003
Place of Birth: Hamilton, Ontario
Ht: 6-foot-1
Wt: 185 pounds
Position: C
NHL Draft Eligibility: 2021 first-year eligibility
Rankings

Pinelli made the Rangers out of training camp prior to the 2019-20 season and made his OHL debut with the team that same year. He would go on to have an impressive year, putting up 18 goals and 41 points through 59 games before the pandemic put a halt to the OHL season.
With the 2020-21 season looming and no plans for an OHL season in sight, Pinelli joined fellow 2021 draft prospects such as Brandt Clarke, Carson Lambos, Brennan Othmann, and Mason McTavish by making the decision to play in Europe in his draft season. Options were limited, however, and Pinelli ended up playing for HDD Jesenice of the Alps Hockey League on loan.
Going from playing in a league with guys your age and being close to home to playing in a league with grown men almost seven thousand kilometres away from home would be a challenging set of circumstances for any junior hockey player. But Pinelli took it in stride.
Living on his own for the first time in a foreign country where he didn’t speak a lick of Slovenian, Pinelli put up 11 points through 13 games for HDD Jesenice. Albeit a small sample size, he impressed and definitely appeared to make the best of an unusual situation.
To follow up his stint in Slovenia, Pinelli earned the opportunity to represent Team Canada at the 2021 Under-18 World Hockey Championships. Playing alongside future draft phenoms in Connor Bedard and Shane Wright, he finished the tournament tied for second in points with 11 through seven games.
Now standing at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Pinelli is an incredibly flashy player who’s electric offensively and reliable defensively. He has an above-average shot with a minimal windup, as his wrists are strong enough to generate effective shots without one. His skating is also above-average, and he’s a player you can trust to generate plays in all areas of the ice.
Pinelli is also good on the forecheck and has no issue throwing the body. He’s a very unselfish player who will let his linemates create the plays as much as he enjoys creating them himself. He can be just as effective as a finisher as a playmaker.

Why would you have hopefully the same result? The result is still out on Gunler.

If anything, you hope it's a polar opposite result, because if one of them is a bust the other one has to be a star.

You will anger the hockey gods with your gaming it.

"We will give you the polar opposite result, Anton: one will suck, and the other one will blow!"

NHL Mock Draft 2021: From 1 to 224, Corey Pronman projects all seven rounds

27. Carolina: Fabian Lysell, RW, Lulea-SHL
Lysell is a wide-range player in terms of where he could go due to his great speed and hands, but the more scouts I talk to the less I buy into him being a top-15 guy. A pick in the 20s seems more realistic. I’m sure Carolina would prefer a defenseman here given how forward-heavy their system is, but he fits a lot of what they typically target.

59. Aleksi Heimosalmi, RHD, Assat-Finland Jr.
91. Aidan Hreschuk, LHD, U.S. NTDP-USHL
123. Joshua Roy, RW, Sherbrooke-QMJHL
187. Jimi Suomi, LHD, Jokerit-Finland Jr.
200. Miguel Tourigny, RHD, Blaineville-Boisbriand-QMJHL
209. Dovar Tinling, C, Vermont-Hockey East
219. Cade Ahrenholz, RW, Lakeville South-US High School

I like the Lysell pick.

I have absolutely no clue on the rest. Part of the fun of draft day and the days after, for me, is reading up on the guys they pick.

Same. I learn pretty much the guys projected for the first round, but after that I really don't have a lot of knowledge. I'm always impressed with the guys on HF who can tell you exactly who they want with each pick their team has. I wish I had enough time to read up on every draft-eligible prospect like they do.

Even as someone that at one point was one of said people this draft is going to suffer from so much under scouting by people that follow these guys on HF that I would struggle to name guys beyond the second round. Unless someone is paid to do it for a living i have a hard time eying anyone getting enough views on some prospects this year.

As long as they don't go full Philippe Paradis panic mode again I'm fine with whoever we take minus any major character red flags. I'm taking Mitchell Miller level shit or even some of the stuff with Downie and TDA from when they were in junior.
