GDT: May 3 • Russia vs. Slovenia

We've built quite a pipeline of goalies to North America lately. So who would you call up? There's Koshechkin and Galimov maybe and that's it. Also Varlamov just coulndn't come because of his legal troubles. So basically it should have been Bob, Varlamov, Khudobin. With Varlamov out they just called up a 3rd guy. I doubt this will have an impact. I doubt Barulin plays another game actually.
 
well, it was better than yesterday, showed some guts & heart. i still dream about 1/4finals, sure it will be tough, but if we beat slovakia in r3 (as we did in sochi), who knows. and gl to russia, joy to watch!
 
Didn't like Russia's defence today. The offence was clicking, especially in the first period, but afterwards, even though they created a lot of chances, they didn't capitalize on them. I agree that Barulin will probably not play anymore - I was surprised they picked him, considering that his recent performances in the Euro Tour weren't good either. Bobrovsky against the States, for sure.
 
Thanks for the comment, though I think many Russian fans are quite concerned, definitely with our defence and with our goaltending.

I definitely like the Panarin, Shipachyov, Mozyakin line - those guys are creative, elusive, keep the puck well. Malkin and Tarasenko need to get into the fray a bit more, they weren't too effective today.

Other than that, we need a much more solid defence!

Slovenia played well, didn't give up on the match. Kinda funny how the first 2 goals were pretty much the same, hehe. Barulin let in some relatively weak goals.

it feels like the russian team is still in the garbage time mode, awaiting the real stuff. enough time to put the pieces together i guess. Panarin, Shipachyov, Mozyakin line is brilliant, poetry. overall i think Sbornaya will take the title here, simply too much talent in the room compared to others.

It's not Mozyakin, but Dadonov, who plays with Panara and Shipa.
 
the Canadians and Swedes are looking really strong too. Right now it's 10-0 Canada vs. Germany, and the Swedes beat Austria 6-1. I do agree that the Russians have scored some pretty goals, but once again, against attacking teams, you need reliable defence and goaltending.

I think Bob will be ok. But our defense is a big concern. We'll see tomorrow, USA has pretty decent team.

Znarok did complain about the defence in an interview after the match, so I think he'll take some measures to make it more efficient for tomorrow, or at least propose alternative approaches.
 
regarding Barulin, two quotes from Slovenian players who scored from practically same position and in the same way.

Kopitar, after scoring for 1-3: "To tell you the truth, I just closed my eyes and shot."

Pance, after scoring for 2-4: "True, I shot from the same spot as Anže did. On the bench we were talking that he's got a soft glove."
