Don't kid yourself, no one will be able to beat canada, it's as much of a lock as the olympic final in 2014 when sweden lost Zetterberg and Bäckström, there just isn't any chance.

Yes, but last year.. .Reimer Joel Ward, Chimera, Hodgson, Read, Huberdeau... very mediocre players if you ask me

True were some not so sexy names, but as evidenced in the playoffs, guys like Ward, and Chimera are good solid players that add something, not really fillers...
the others though?, ...I see your point. Not very deep.

It looked like Canada went lockdown mode from the start of the 3rd. Pretty bad habit especially when the game wasn't even a blowout. Can't be doing that in the gold medal game.

When you have the talent to prevent the other team from an legitimate scoring chances over a period of hockey, even when they are playing desperate hockey, you can do that.

The Czechs had 5 shots on net in the final period. 5.

Canada had by far the best scoring chances in that third period.

You can trade a few odd chances when you have a 2 goal lead. Better to do that, than open it up, and trade a multitude of chances.

The only time this strategy works is when you can simply shut down the other team. You surely can't do it when the teams are more evenly matched.

I agree, the only negative for Canada that I saw was how passively they played in the third period. They at least played pretty well when passive, but it's preferable to keep the pressure on the other team.

Dear Mr. Biteman:

Since you control everything, plz bring the Gretz trade full circle (or whatever) and see that Crosby gets traded to EDM for McD. Watching him on the line with Hall and Eberele was fun - kinda like the ol' 'Two Kidz and a Goat line', but diff. Course EDM will still suck w/o any D or a goaltender so if you could work that also that would be great. Worse that could happen is all of hockey will have something to moan about for the next 25 years or so.

If you can't make this happen, well then you suck. Thank you.

they went to 1-3-1 really early in the period...I am an Oiler fan, and I can tell you this....Eberle, and Hall ( though not as bad as HF makes them out to be) are not defensive stalwarts.

having Crosby high, and seeing Ebs and Hall trying to clog the neutrel zone?..had me a little worried. not good tactics for that group.

I think what should really be considered in regards to Giroux getting the nod as 'Canadas' best forward' is that he has been matched vs the oppositions best players every game (who are mainly NHLers, including a few All-Star calibre guys) yet is +10 with only 1 goal against, has got the most TOI amongst forwards every game, takes all the key faceoffs, and is a fixture on the PK... the Spezza and Crosby line have been the two arguably most 'shielded' and playing vs other teams bottom sixes... which for the most part are made up of good euro league players.

2002.

Olympics.

NHL-size rinks.

Sweden won with 5-2 over Canada.

02 Olympics was played on hybrid ice not NHL ice. Vancouver was the only Olympics in history to be played on NHL ice. It's hilarious how these myths get started and flourish in alternative universe land.

Only European team to win a small ice tournament was the Soviets, wayyyyyy back in 1981.

But if we're going to go with the true best on best which would be

CCs/WCs 1976, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2004

Olympics, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014

Winners:

Canada: 8

Soviet Union, USA, Sweden, Czech Republic: 1

Congratz to Canada, it was well deserved win. It's a pity refs disallowed that goal, things could've been more interesting. Now, let's get bronze :) it would be kinda sad to get no medal in this tourney

Ou, so who exactly deserved it? France,Germany?:)

Btw. Congrats to Canada!

Iceland duh!

This was a terrific hockey game.

Was actually a refreshing change from the Playoff grind. Large ice hockey can be great when both team play an agressive game,

Canada looked great. All 4 lines rolling well -- and the 4th line, which sees a significant name/pedigree drop has arguably been the most consistent and stable. Look out Russia

If you take last years rosters for example -- on paper, that Canada could compete with Russia, or Czech or whoever. Mackinnon, Kadri, Turris, Browuer, and a 20 goal Cody Hodgson arent scrubs.

The issue is that these are young guys who were inexperienced in both big ice and tournament play. While they may have similar skill levels to the other teams, they lacked in knowledge and experience. This is crucial.

Now you add a Crosby, a Spezza, a Burns, a Giroux. These are the best of the best in the world, and they have the experience. Plus they have been around long enough to know how big ice learns.

You can see that when Canada implemented a strategy to play on big ice, the players knew how to execute
